  • The structures of dehydrated $Ag_9Cs_3$-A treated with hydrogen gas at three different temperatures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Their structures were solved and refined in the cubic space group Pm3m at 23(1) $^{\circ}C$. All crystals were ion exchanged in flowing streams of aqueous $AgNO_3$/$CsNO_3$ with a mole ratio 1:3.0 to achieve the desired crystal composition. The structures treated with hydrogen at $23^{\circ}C(a=12.288(1)\;{\AA})\;and\;310^{\circ}C(a=12.291(2)\;{\AA})$ refined to the final error indices R1 = 0.091 and R2 = 0.079, and 0.065 and 0.073, respectively, using the 216 and 227 reflections, respectively, for which I >3${\sigma}$(I). In both of these structures, eight $Ag^+$ ions are found nearly at 6-ring centers, and three $Cs^+$ ions lie at the centers of the 8-rings at sites of $D_{4h}$ symmetry. One $Ag^{\circ}atom$, presumably formed from the reduction of a $Ag^+$ ion by an oxide ion of a residual water molecule or of the zeolite framework during the dehydration process, is retained within the zeolite, perhaps in a cluster. In these two structures hydrogen gas could not enter the zeolite to reduce the $Ag^+$ ions because the large $Cs^+$ ions blocked all the 8-windows. However, hydrogen could slowly diffuse into the zeolite and was able to reach and to reduce about half of the $Ag^+$ ions in the structure only at high temperature ($470^{\circ}C$). The silver atoms produced migrated out of the zeolite framework, and the protons generated led to substantial crystal damage.

  • Mixed-matrix carbon molecular sieve membranes containing conventional and hierarchically structured 5A were synthesized for application in oxygen (O2)/nitrogen (N2) separation. In general, incorporating 5A fillers into porous carbon matrices dramatically increased the permeability of the membrane with a marginal decrease in selectivity, resulting in very attractive O2/N2 separation performances. Hierarchical zeolite 5A, which contains both microporous and mesoporous domains, improved the separation performance further, indicating that the mesopores in the zeolite can serve as an additional path for rapid gas diffusion without sacrificing O2/N2 selectivity substantially. This facile strategy successfully and cost-effectively pushed the performance close to the Robeson upper bound. It produced high performance membranes based on Matrimid® 5218 polyimide and zeolite 5A, which are inexpensive commercial products.

  • Phase shift spectroscopy is applied to Eu(Ⅲ) luminescence from $Eu^{3+}$-exchanged Y zeolite. The phase shift and intensity modulation of luminescence following intensity-modulated excitation are measured as a function of modulation frequency and they are fitted into a double exponential decay. The fast decay component, compared with the slow one, has narrower spectral bandwidth and is emitted from the $Eu^{3+}$ that has more polar and definite environment with higher symmetry and that interacts more easily with hydrated water molecules. The fast decay component is attributed to $Eu^{3+}$ at site Ⅱ' while the slow one to $Eu^{3+}$ at sites Ⅰ' and Ⅰ.

  • The behavior of Na-A type zeolite formed in hydrothermal synthesis of melting slag from municipal incineration ash has been investigated with varying synthesis time and $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio. Sodium silicate and sodium aluminate feed was found to initially form nuclei of Na-A type zeolite in the behavioral study of the reaction products with different synthesis times. As the synthesis time increased, the nuclei have grown to Na-A type zeolite crystals by reacting with $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ dissolved from the melting slag. The hydrothermal synthesis was completed in 10 hr in the $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio of 1.38 and after that time, the Na-A type zeolite formed was dissolved and transformed into hydroxysodalite. Only Na-A type zeolite was formed in the $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio ranging 0.80 to 1.96, whereas Na-P type zeolite as well as Na-A type was formed in the $SiO_2/Al2O_3$ ratio of 2.54.

  • Zeolite 4A was prepared by new synthesis method, 2-step crystallization, for enhancement of oil absorption capacity. Vietnamese sand and $NaAlO_2$ solution from natural bauxite were used as raw materials in stead of conventional cullet and $Al(OH)_3$ to reduced the processing cost. Some dissolved organics in $NaAlO_2$ solution were removed by activated carbon. Synthetic method was progressed by 1) reacting the raw materials at $55^{\circ}C$, 4 hr with the ratio of Si/Al to 1.15, and 2) reacting at $65^{\circ}C$, 5 hr with reducing the ratio of Si/Al to 0.98. New method can easily control the particle size, aggregation, surface polarity, and enhanced the whiteness of the products. The prepared zeolite 4A shows excellent oil absorption capacity(O.A.C>50 ml/100 g) as well as equal value with calcium ion exchange capacity, and proves the 2-step crystallization is the economic and effective process for the preparation of zeolite 4A.

  • Dispersion occurs when clay soil disperses under specific conditions and is rapidly washed away. While there are numerous methods for rectifying it, they are neither cost nor time-effective. The current study used metakaolin and zeolite to improve heavily dispersive clay soil either separately or in combination at 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% of the soil weight. After 7 days of curing, the samples were tested to determine the extent of change in the dispersion potential, as well as the improvement of the geotechnical properties of the soil. The results indicated that the addition of 2% zeolite with 6% to 8% metakaolin decreased the dispersion potential considerably. Double hydrometry test findings revealed that the dispersion potential decreased by almost 70% and entered the non-dispersive group; the crumb test also revealed this. Atterberg limits testing indicated a decrease in the plasticity index which reduced the flexibility of the samples. The greatest decrease in PI (67.5%) was achieved with the addition of 8% zeolite plus 8% metakaolin to the soil. The results of density tests revealed that a decrease in the optimal moisture content increased the maximum dry density of soil. This increase in density was a response to the high reactivity of metakaolin with calcium hydroxide and the formation of calcium hydroxide hydrate gel. This eventually caused an increase in the unconfined compressive strength, the greatest increase in strength of about 1.8-fold was observed with a combination of 2% zeolite and 6% metakaolin compared to the unmodified sample.

  • This study focused on estimating the low concentration of $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal by using simultaneous reaction of the adsorption and microbial nitrification with microbe-attached zeolite media. To evaluate the adsorption effect of the zeolite media, the expanded polypropylene (EPP) media which are not able to adsorb $NH_4{^+}-N$ were used as a control media in order to compare the adsorption ability. Each media was used to experiment after aerated 8 hr for attachment of the microbes. The batch experiment shows that nitrification occurred in zeolite media better than EPP media because nitrifiers could consume the relatively enough amount of $NH_4{^+}-N$ adsorbed onto the zeolite media. Compared to the reactor with EPP media, nitrification occurred only in the reactor with zeolite media under continuous operation at the empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 25 min and 3 mg/L of $NH_4{^+}-N$ concentration. As the EBCT of the reactor with zeolite media increased from 10 to 60 min, the nitrification efficiencies increased too. $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal efficiency showed up more than 90% at EBCT 60 min. And the difference in concentration of the total nitrogen between the influent and the effluent was 0.25 mg/L at EBCT 10 min, 0.78 mg/L at EBCT 25 min, 0.59 mg/L at EBCT 40 min and 0.37 mg/L at EBCT 60 min, respectively. This difference was due to between adsorption rate and nitrification rate of $NH_4{^+}-N$, and it was considered that $NH_4{^+}-N$ was adsorbed on the zeolite media by the gap of the concentration.

  • Air is essential for human beings to survive, but urban air is polluted with soot and harmful gases, due to the increase in industrial development and the population. Thus, air pollution in large cities is of increasing interest in the research community. One of the plausible solutions to this problem is supplying sufficient oxygen to indoor spaces. The main principle of the oxygen generator is to separate oxygen from air using synthetic zeolite. Various synthetic zeolites have been applied to public indoor spaces with the focus being placed on the oxygen exchange quality. Among the characteristics of zeolites which can be applied to oxygen generators is their ability to adsorb nitrogen from the air and, in this way, generate only oxygen. Thus, we investigated the degree of nitrogen adsorption by five kinds of natural zeolite and LTA zeolite 3A, 4A, and 5A (two different sizes). Using the PSA method, the higher the degree of nitrogen adsorption, the higher the oxygen saturation concentration, it was found that the nitrogen adsorption degree of the 5A zeolite was the highest. 6% on average. It was also found that the size of the zeolite had a significant effect on the degree of nitrogen adsorption.

  • A sewage was treated using a horizontal flow zeolite-filled reed bed. The sewage from the student dormitory of Changwon National University was fed into the reed bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of $314L/m^2$ day. The filtering height of the reed bed was 100 cm and the zeolite mixture was filled in the reed bed. The mixture consisted of the same volume of two types of zeolite : $0.5{\sim}1mm$ and $1{\sim}3mm$ in diameter. Annual average removal efficiency was SS $88.5%,\;COD_{cr},\;86.1%,\;COD_{Mn}\;81.0%,\;T-N\;48.6%,\;NH_4^+-N\;97.1%$ and T-P 42.8%. T-N of effluent was mostly $NO_3^--N$ and the concentration of $NO_2^--N$ in effluent was lower than 0.1 mg/L. All removal efficiencies did not show a remarkable seasonal change.

  • In order to improve a complicated Cheongju manufacturing process, saccharification process with gelatinized rice flour was employed during a Cheongju fermentation. High sugar content without unsaccharified residue appeared to impede the yeast growth and fermentation. To solve this problem, addition of zeolite to the saccharifying solution containing 20% (w/v) sugar and fed-batch system were employed. These adjustments resulted in a increase of yeast viability and 40% time-saving alterations of fermentation. The Cheongju, having 18% (v/v) of ethanol content and fresh and rich flavor, could be made in 12 days. Yeast cells recovered from the fermentation precipitates could be reused up to four times without any adverse effect on cell viability, alcohol production, and flavor of the product. The complicated conventional brewing process of Cheongju can thus be simplified effectively.
