Antibacterial Activity of Essential Oils from Zanthoxylum piperitum A.P. DC. and Zanthoxylum schinifolium

  • This study was carried out to investigate the potential use of Zanthoxylum schinifolium and Zanthoxylum piperitum A.P. DC. as a source of antimicrobial agents against food borne pathogens. Essential oils of Z. schinifolium and Z. piperitum A.P. DC. were collected by steam distillation and analyzed by GC-MS. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oils was examined using the agar diffusion and micro-dilution assays. The effectiveness of Z. schinifolium essential oil was greater against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus than other pathogens, and the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were 1.25, 2.5, and 1.25, 2.5, and $1.25\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Z. piperitum A.P. DC. essential oil was the most effective against all pathogens tested except for Escherichia coli O157:H7, and the MIC values against B. cereus, Salmonella choleraesuis, and V. parahaemolyticus were 1.25, 2.5, and $1.25\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Limonene, the major component of Z. piperitum A.P. DC. essential oils, had the highest inhibitory activity toward V. parahaemolyticus with a MIC value of $0.15\;{\mu}g/mL$. Meanwhile, citronellal and geranyl acetate, major components of both essential oils, displayed antibacterial activity against only B. cereus with MIC values of 1.25 and $5\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Therefore, these essential oils could be useful as antimicrobial agents against foodborne pathogens.

  • Yields of various solvent extracts for Zanthoxylum schinifolium and Z. piperitum leaves were higher in ethanol extract layer. Ethanol Extract in sancho and chopi leaves was fractionated with different solvents, such as hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol and water, yields of hexane fraction was higher. In the solvent extracts using methanol, ethanol, hexane, chloroform, and water, ethanol extract showed the most effective antimicrobial activities. Ethanol extract in sancho and chopi leaves was fractionated, the most antimicrobial activities of sancho leaf were ethyl acetate fraction, and chopi leaf were chloroform fraction.

초피나무의 생약학적 연구 (Pharmacognostical Studies on the ‘Cho Pi Na Mu’)

  • The Korean folk medicine 'Cho Pi Na Mu' has been used orally to tuberculosis, neuralgia, acute and chronic gastritis and arthritis. In order to clarify the botanical origin this crude drug, comparative anatomical studies were made on the branches of Zanthoxylum species growing wild in Korea, i.e. Z. coreanum, Z. piperitum, Z. piperitum var. pubescens, Z. planispinum, Z. schinifolium, Z. schinifolium var. inermis, Z. schinifolium var. microphyllum. As a result, it was clarified that 'Cho Pi Na Mu' was the branch of Z. piperitum.

  • Korean folk medicine "EJePiNaMu" has been used orally to cure neuralgia, rheumatism and common cold. To clarify the botanical origin of this crude drug, comparative anatomical studies were made on the branches of Zanthoxylum species growing wild in Korea, i.e. Z. coreanum, Z. piperitum, Z. piperitum var. pubescens, Z. planispinum, Z. schinifolium, Z. schinifolium var. inermis, Z. schinifolium var. microphyllum. As a result, it was clarified that "EJePiNaMu" was the branch of Zanthoxylum planispinum.

산초 종자 정유의 항산화 및 항염 효능 (Anti-oxidant and Anti-inflammatory activities of Zanthoxylum schinifolium Essential Oil)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 RAW 264.7 세포에 산초 종자 정유 성분의 항염 및 항산화 효과에 대하여 알아보고자 하였다. 산초 종자로부터 정유를 추출하였으며, 추출물의 항산화 및 항염 활성에 대하여 평가하였다. 추출물의 항산화 활성은 DPPH 라디칼 소거능과 SOD 유사 활성 평가법을 이용하였다. 또한 세포독성 평가를 위해 MTT를 이용하여 세포생존율을 측정하였다. LPS로 염증이 유도된 RAW 264.7 세포에 대하여 산초 정유가 NO생성과 $PGE_2$ 생성 정도에 미치는 영향을 측정하였다. 그 결과 산초 종자 정유는 농도 의존적으로 DPPH 라디칼 소거능과 SOD 유사 활성이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 세포생존율 평가에서는 $40{\mu}g/mL^{-1}$ 이하의 농도에서 98% 이상의 낮은 세포독성을 나타냈으며, 항염 효능 평가에서는 LPS를 단독으로 처리한 양성대조군보다 산초 정유 성분을 처리한 군에서 NO와 $PGE_2$ 생성이 현저하게 감소되는 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과는 산초 정유가 염증매개인자를 감소시키고 산화의 활성을 방지할 수 있는 기능성 식물소재로서의 가능성을 나타낸다.

  • The antioxidant activity of methanol extracts of thirty plants was tested using the methol of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-pi-cryl hydrazyl (DPPH) reactivity. Four methanol extracts from Zingiber officinale, Piper nigrum , Zanthoxylum schinifolium and Capsocum annuum were found to be the most effective on DPPH radical scavenging activity. The next effective ones were Perilla frutescens , Sedium sarmentosum , Raphnus sativas, aArctium lappa, Beta vulgaris. Brassica oleracea var. Acephala, bBrassica juncea inorder, and the others did not show a considerable activity. The methanol extract obtained from the seed coats of Zanthoxylum schinifolium was fractinated with several sovlents. The interphase materials exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity and was further purified by silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chormatography. Two active principles were isolated and identified as quercetin -3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamonopyranoiside(quercitrin) and quercetin 3-O-$\alpha$-D-galactopyranoside (hyperoside) by ultraviolet(UV), proton nuclear magetic resonance (1H-NMR) and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR). Its antioxidative activity was a little higher that that of L-ascorbic acid.

방향성 식물자원의 정유함량에 관한 연구 I. 목련과 , 운향과 수목의 시기 및 부위별 정유함량 (A Study on the essential oil of fragrant woody landscape plants)

  • This experiment was carrie out to investigate the amount of essential of leaves and fruits of Magnolia sieboldii, Magnolia hypoleuca, Evodia danillii male and female, Phellodendron amurense male and female and Zanthoxylum schinifolium male and emale by Karlsrube set on August, August, September and October in 1994. Essential oil yield was highest in the fruits of Zanthoxylum schinifollium leaves on Augus the amount of essential oil of Magnolia sieboldii and Magnolia hypoleuca leaves was more than the one of Evodia danillii, Phellodendron amurense and Zanthoxylum schnifolium leaves. The amount of essential oil were not diferent between male and female leaves.

영동지역 관목류 5가지 수종 생엽의 연소특성 (Combustional Characteristics of Living Leaves for Five Shrubs in Youngdong Areas)

  • 본 연구에서는 산림 내 가연물의 산불위험성을 판단하기 위하여 영동지역에서 자생하는 관목류(생강나무, 조록싸리나무, 초피나무, 산초나무, 개암나무)의 생엽을 대상으로 발화점시험기, 콘칼로리미터, 연기밀도시험기를 이용하여 연소특성을 고찰하였다. 조록싸리나무는 발화온도가 가장 낮고 착화시간이 가장 빨랐으며, CO와 $CO_2$의 평균방출농도가 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 초피나무는 가장 많은 열량을 방출하였으며, 산초나무는 가장 많은 연기를 발생한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 산불발생 시 조록싸리나무는 다른 수종에 비하여 착화가 가장 용이하고 초피나무는 확산 및 화재강도가 가장 클 것으로 판단되며, 산초나무와 조록싸리나무는 다량의 연기발생에 따라 피난이 어려울 것으로 사료된다.
