  • In this paper, a novel low complexity linear receiver is proposed that is used at the receiver of MIMO systems. Zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers are common linear receivers. ZF receiver is simpler than MMSE receiver from the hardware implementation perspective, howerver, MMSE shows better performance than ZF. In general, MCS level changes according to channel condition. This paper shows the benefit of choosing between MMSE and ZF according to the selected MCS level. We implement the MCS-adaptive linear receiver as hardware, and show that its complexity is comparable to the conventional MMSE receiver.

  • The optimal number of users achieving the maximum sum throughput is analyzed in zero-forcing (ZF) based multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a large number of base station (BS) antennas. By utilizing deterministic ergodic sum rates for the ZF-beam forming (ZF-BF) and ZF-receiver (ZF-R) with a large number of BS antennas [1], [2], we can obtain the ergodic sum throughputs for the ZF-BF and ZF-R for the uplink and downlink frame structures, respectively. Then, we can also formulate and solve the optimization problems maximizing the ergodic sum throughputs with respect to the number of users. This paper shows that the approximate downlink sum throughput for the ZF-BF is a concave function and the approximate uplink sum throughput for the ZF-R is also a concave function in a feasible range with respect to the number of users. The simulation results verify the analyses and show that the derived numbers of users provide the maximum sum throughputs for the ZF-BF as well as ZF-R in multiuser MIMO systems with a large number of BS antennas.

  • In this paper, a transmitter-based multipath processing and inter-channel interference (ICI) cancellation scheme for a ultra-wideband (UWB) spatial multiplexing (SM) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system is presented. It consists of taps delayed lines and zero-forcing (ZF) filters in the transmitter and correlators in the receiver. For a UWB SM MIMO system with N transmit antennas, M receive antennas, and Q resolvable multipath components, the BER performance of a linear transmit ZF scheme is analyzed in a log-normal fading channel and also compared with that of a receiver-based ICI rejection approach. It is found that when M ${\leq}$ N, the transmit ZF processing approach outperforms the ZF receiver while making the mobile units low-cost and low-power.

  • This paper focuses on the simplified receiver design for multi-user circular block oversampled filter bank (CB-OSFB) uplink systems. Through application of discrete Fourier transform (DFT), the special banded structure and circular properties of the modulation matrix in the frequency domain of each user are derived. By exploiting the newly derived properties, a simplified zero-forcing (ZF) receiver is proposed for multi-user CB-OSFB uplink systems in the multipath channels. In the proposed receiver, the matrix inversion operation of the large dimension multi-user equivalent channel matrix is transformed into DFTs and smaller size matrix inversion operations. Simulation is given to show that the proposed ZF receiver can dramatically reduce the computational complexity while with almost the same symbol error rate as that of the traditional ZF receiver.

  • Lattice-reduction (LR) techniques have been developed for signal detection in spatial multiplexing multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems to obtain the largest diversity gain. Thus, an LR-assisted zero-forcing (ZF) receiver can achieve the maximum diversity gain in spatial multiplexing MIMO systems. In this paper, a simplified analysis of the achievable diversity gain is presented by fitting the channel coefficients lattice-reduced by a complex Lenstra-Lenstra-$Lov{\acute{a}}z$ (LLL) algorithm into approximated Gaussian random variables. It will be shown that the maximum diversity gain corresponding to two times the number of receive antennas can be achieved by the LR-based ZF detector. In addition, the approximated bit error rate (BER) expression is also derived. Finally, the analytical BER performance is comparatively studied with the simulated results.

  • This paper applies transmit antenna selection algorithms to spatial-temporal combining-based spatial multiplexing (SM) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The employed criterion is based on the largest minimum output signal-to-noise ratio of the multiplexed streams. It is shown via simulations that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the SM UWB systems based on the two-dimensional Rake receiver is significantly improved by antenna diversity through transmit antenna selection on a log-normal multipath fading channel. When the transmit antenna diversity through antenna selection is exploited in the SM UWB systems, the BER performance of the spatial-temporal combining-based zero-forcing (ZF) receiver is also compared with that of the ZF detector followed by the Rake receiver.

  • 본 논문은 MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output)- OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) 시스템에서 V-BLAST (Vertical-Ball Laboratories Layered Space Time) 수신기에 대하여 성능을 비교하고 평가한다. V-BLAST 수신기로 ZF(zero-Forcing), MMSE(Minimum Mean Squared Error), ZF-OSIC(Zero Forcing - Ordered Successive Interference Cancellation), MMSE-OSIC(Minimum Mean Squared Error - Ordered Successive Interference Cancellation)를 사용한다.

  • In this paper, we consider a joint optimization of transmitter and receiver in additive cyclostationary noise with zero forcing criterion. We assume that the period of the cyclostationary noise is the same as the inverse of the symbol transmission rate and that the noise has a positive-definite autocorrelation function. The data sequence is modeled as a wide-sense stationary colored random process and the channel is modeled as a linear time-invariant system with a frequency selective impulse response. Under these assumptions and a constraint on the average power of the transmitted signal, we derive the optimum transmitter and receiver waveforms that jointly minimizes the mean square error with no intersymbol interference. The simulation results show that the proposed system has a better BER performance than the systems with receiver only optimization and the systems with no transmitter and receiver optimization.

  • In this paper, we present a scheme to overcome the worst case complexity of the sphere decoder. If the number of visited nodes reaches the threshold, the detected symbol vector is determined between two candidate symbol vectors. One candidate symbol vector is obtained from the demodulated output of ZF receiver which is initial stage of the sphere decoder. The other candidate symbol vector consists of two sub-symbol vectors. The first sub-symbol vector consists of lately visited nodes running from the most upper layer. The second one contains corresponding demodulated outputs of ZF receiver. Between these two candidate symbol vectors, the one with smaller euclidean distance to the received symbol vector is chosen as detected symbol vector. In addition, we show the upper bound of symbol error rate performance for the sphere decoder using the proposed scheme. In the simulation, the proposed scheme shows the significant reduction of the worst case complexity while having negligible SER performance degradation.

  • Space-Time Block Code(STBC) provides full diversity gains with simple linear processing at the receiver. Interference Cancellation(IC) techniques in system using STBC improve the capacity and performance of wireless systems with co-channel users. Various IC techniques, Minimum Mean-Squared Error(MMSE) and Zero-Forcing(ZF) algorithms in system with STBC were proposed in the literatures in multiuser environment. The performance of these IC techniques were simulated by assuming perfect channel state information(CSI) of multiuser at the receiver. However, in practice it is difficult to know perfect CSI of multiuser at the receiver. Thus, channel estimation scheme is essential at the receiver. Also SNR estimation scheme is required to operate the MMSE IC algorithm. In this paper, we present estimation schemes of CSI and SNR using training sequences. Through extensive computer simulation, we compare and evaluate the performance of IC techniques using the proposed CSI and SNR estimation techniques.
