  • The purposes of this study were to review the rural youth programs of selected foreign countries and to draw some implications to the rural youth programs in Korea. The youth development programs reviewed were 4-H Youth Development Program of U.S.A, Rural Youth Information Service of Australia, Rural Youth Job Strategy of Canada, The Urban-Rural Youth Program of U.S.A, and Expert Consultation on Extension Rural Youth Programmes and Sustainable Development of FAO. After reviewing the rural youth programs of selected foreign countries, the authors suggested the following implications for further development of rural youth programs in Korea; 1. The target group of rural youth programs should include urban youth as well as rural youth, and the programs should be focused on enlarging their awareness of the rural community and agriculture. 2. Rural youth programs should be extended beyond agricultural sectors, such as leadership, career development, leisure activity, and cultural life. 3. We should develop some programs to support academic achievement, career development, employment, cultural needs including some strategies to prevent problematic behaviors of rural youth. 4. Rural youth should be supported more opportunities to join the community life to experience and learn various life skills through active participation such as interpersonal skill, leadership skill, and problem-solving skill.

  • There has been increasing evidence of the positive effects in informal science programs to promote the youths' positive development. However, relatively a small number of informal science programs target specific student populations such as youth in poverty with little research done about the important program factors. This case study presents an exemplary informal science education program (focusing on Earth Science Education or more specifically, water in urban environments) for youth in poverty in a midwest city of the United States. This study explored the most important characteristics of the program that could lead to positive development for the youth. Through a number of observations of the program and interviews with the participants, this study employs inductive and interpretive research methods. Findings show that the program managers' beliefs about the youths' knowledge and experiences, their relationship building skills, and their cooperative work are very important. A concrete mission for the program and structured institutional support to hire the youth as paid museum staff are also important in assuming their responsibility and building identity as an active social member.

  • The Digital Age calls for improvement of information literacy particularly among children and youth who are vulnerable to cybergrooming. Taking an interdisciplinary approach by leveraging our team's expertise including child and adolescent development, data analytics, and cybersecurity, this study proposes an interactive artificial intelligence (AI)-based preventive simulation program that raises youth knowledge and awareness about the risk of cybergrooming as well as increases resilient self-efficacy in their cybersecurity-relevant skills. The primary purpose of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the simulation program on preventing cybergrooming. More specifically, this study is designed to examine developmental changes in self-efficacy of cybersecurity-relevant skills among youth participants as a function of the preventive simulation program. Further, this study will identify risk and protective factors that explain interindividual differences in the ability of children and youth either to fall victim to advances from a cyber predator or to recognize and deter such threats. The preliminary data will help improve the effectiveness of the preventive simulation program as well as the methods of implementation to large groups of youth. The findings from the proposed study will contribute to making specific recommendations to parents, educators, practitioners, and policy makers for the prevention of cybergrooming.

Methods: A community-based HIV prevention program was developed using the Cox's Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior. The program development was carried out in four phases using a mixed research method: need-assessment which consisted of three steps (secondary-data analysis, key-informant interview, and focused-group interview); identification of preliminary program contents; expert's review of the program contents for the validity and cultural acceptability of the program; and refinement of the proposed program contents. Results: The HIV prevention program developed in this study consisted of three modules; the first module was for enhancing the youth's self-esteem, the second was for providing the youth with information regarding HIV/AIDS and safe sexual behavior, and the third was for improving the youth's communication skills and refusing skills. Conclusions: The need assessment and expert's review was very effective way to reflect sociocultural factors of rural Ethiopia for developing HIV prevention program for female youth. Further research is desirable for verifying the effectiveness of the developedprogram.

  • In Korea, only a small study based on the bibliotherapy program for responsibility promotion of at risk or alienated youth has been performed. The purpose of this proposed study is to further examine the challenges and effects of a group bibliotherapy program on alienated youth to determine the degree of success in terms of "responsibility" and/or positive results. The current research program included a relatively small sample size of 11 young people (2 boys, 9 girls) in the Suwon Youth Center from November to December, 2015. The alienated youth program consisted of 8 sessions in the correct activity center with or having levels of insight, application, and verification measured using the Lee Sang Ro et al. (1989), Developmental Responsibility Examination (Scale of Responsibility). As a result, this study will confirm that the program to raise the level of alienated youth responsibility produces positive effects. These results will provide additional theoretical rationale and implications capable for applying "responsibility" education for alienated youth to the overall field encompassing youth education. Based on this, it will be necessary to extend various identified methods in depth to achieve this overall goal.

The study analyzed various evidence-based gatekeeper programs and extracts essential educational elements from these programs in order to apply to the smart contents. Sixteen adolescents participated in a quantitative(pre-post test) study and 8 of them participated in a focus group interview. In addition to youth participants, youth experts were also interviewed to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational smart contents of a suicide prevention program. The results included: (1) higher post-test scores were attained for knowledge of youth suicide; (2) youth participants indicated better understandings of youth suicide and sympathy; (3) on a focused group interview with youth experts, participants also indicated that the program helped youth to interact better with other youth with suicide ideation. • The theses is an analytical comparison research between 'Skills Link' and 'Do Dream' : the former is an effective program to establish a variety of intervention strategies and the institutional foundation for employment support of disadvantaged youth, performed by ESDC in the level of the nation, and the latter is the program which is carried out by K-Dream Center of MGEF in South Korea. As for the research method, comparison and analysis have been fulfilled, focusing on the employment support program. The research includes program background, goal, participation subject, selection standard, program contents, support period, support cost, and program effect. It suggests that we should design the systematic program for the youth in the transition to independency and perform constant support. It is necessary to select beneficiary on the consideration of the characteristics and situation of the disadvantaged youth. In addition, it is required to secure consistency of the program and enlarge the support period. For the sake of successful performance of the independent living program, it is a necessity to motivate the youth and introduce the ways to encourage the business sector to take part in.
