  • Electrical discharge drilling (ED-drilling) is a widespread machining method used to bore small holes with a high aspect ratio. This paper presents additional methods by which ED-drilling can improve machining speed, tool wear, and machined surface quality. Firstly, for high machining speed, and low tool wear, a new-type electrode that was ground on one side or both sides of the cylindrical electrodes was suggested to expel debris. The debris which is generated during the machining process can cause sludge deposition and secondary discharge problems: major reasons to decrease machining speed. This new-type electrode also reduced tool wear that was due to the decrease of unstable discharge in a machining gap by helping to expel waste water and debris from the gap. Secondly, to improve the machined surface roughness, an electrolyzation process was included after drilling. This process made the machined surface smooth by means of an electrochemical reaction between an electrode and a workpiece. In this study, the machining speed, electrode wear, and surface roughness were improved by the newtype electrode and the electrolytic process.

  • Introduction: The aim of this study is to report the effect of Yukmijiwhang-tang-gamibang on the treatment of hypersensitivity vasculitis. Case presentation: A patient with hypersensitivity vasculitis was treated with herbal medicine (3 times a day) and dressing (once per day) for 16 days. The severity of hypersensitivity vasculitis was assessed using the numeral rating scale (NRS) and pruritus score. After treatment, pain and itching symptoms were reduced, the NRS score improved from 5 to 1, and the pruritus score improved from 2 to 0. No adverse reactions were noted and no relapse of hypersensitivity vasculitis occurred within 38 days after the end of treatment. This result shows that herbal medicine could be effective and safe for treating hypersensitivity vasculitis. Conclusion: According to the results, Korean medicine such as Yukmijiwhang-tang-gamibang can be effective and safe for the treatment of hypersensitivity vasculitis.

  • In this case, a 33 year-old female patient had a chronic headache with Panic disorder, and accompanied gastroenteric troubles(vomiting, nausea, dyspepsia and abdominal discomfort), for fifteen years. It may be the symptoms of Phlegm-syncope headache, and we treated this disease with oriental medical treatment, including the Banhabaekchulcheonma-tang, Breathing retraining and Cognitive retructuring. The effects of treatment were measured by were using BPI(Brief Pain Inventory), VAS(Visual analog scale). In Conclusion, Chronic headache with panic disorder was improved by our treatment.

  • Paroxysmal Kinesigenic Dyskinesia ( PKD ) is an unusual dyskinesia often precipitated by voluntary movements and characterized by brief episodes of choreic/ dystonic movements. Little is known of the pathophysiology of PKD, although secondary etiologies such as multiple sclerosis, ischemic stroke, birth injury , head trauma, drug abuse, etc. are known to induce the disease. We report a case of a male patient suffering from both legs dystonia for 10 years. He had a past history of drug abuse, and was diagnosed as PKD by a neurologist. We treated him with acupucture and herbal medicine and was able to observe the improvement in certain symtoms and general condition.

  • The catalytic converters for automobile exhaust systems are manufactured by inserting a mat-wrapped substrate into a stainless steel can. A residual pressure that is too high will initiate a fracture in the substrate. In contrast, a residual pressure that is too low will fail to hold the substrate in the acceleration or deceleration phase. Both the process capability and mat pressure on the substrate are predicted while considering the effect of the statistical variation in the dimensions of the parts. The validity of the solutions is then confirmed. A program using EXCEL combines a finite element analysis and process capability analysis in one program.

  • This study was conducted in order to generate model particles which were similar to particles in diesel emission. Spark discharge was used for carbon agglomerates and hydrocarbon condensation for particles that consist of carbon agglomerates and hydrocarbon. The size of the carbon agglomerates, whose mean size were 30 and 70 nm, ranged between 15 and 200 nm, and the total number concentration of the particles ranged from 3 to $5{\times}10^7#/cm^3$ as the controllable variables in spark discharge generator changed. The result of the hydrocarbon condensation experiment showed that the final sizes of the particles enlarged by condensation did not depend on the initial sizes, but the maximum condensational growth of carbon agglomerates by dodecane ($C_{12}H_{26}$) condensation was 112 times the initial size of 40 nm, while the size of the agglomerates by benzene ($C_6H_6$) was 3.25 times its initial size.

  • In the course of screening neuraminidase inhibitors from herbal medicines, Reynoutria elliptica exhibited high inhibitory activity. Four active compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction by consecutive purification using sillica gel, Sephadex LH-20 chromatography, and recrystallization. The chemical structures of these compounds were identified as 1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone (emodin) 1,8-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-6-methylanthraquinone (emodin 3-methyl ether; physcion), 1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-hydoxymethylanthraquinone ($\omega$-hydroxyemodin), and 3,5,4 -trihydroxystilbene (trans-resvertrol) by spectral data including MS, $^1 H-, and ^{13}C-NMR. The IC_{50}$ values of emodin, emodin 3-methyl ether, $\omega$-hydroxyemodin, and trans-resvertrol were 2.81, 74.07, 10.49, and 8.77 $\mu$M, respectively. They did not inhibit other glycosidase such as glucosidase, mannosidase, and galactosidase, indicating that they were relatively specific inhibitors of neuraminidase.

  • Apart from the geometric features of the rock joints, the shear characteristics of rock mass subject to shear force are also significantly affected by the boundary conditions in the neighborhood of the rock mass. The boundary conditions of the rock mass can be classified into 4 categories according to the stress state of the rock joint, of which the constant normal load (CNL) is the most used for shear test and produces the lowest shear strength and different behavior. In this study, the shear behavior under constant normal stiffness condition was able to replicated by the graphic method normalized by the test results under constant normal stress condition.

  • Displacement caused by tunneling is difficult to predict since it is affected by many factors such as ground condition, excavation method and supplementary method of reinforcement. In this study, horizontal inclinometer was employed to monitor ground settlements above a tunnel face before and after the excavation. Monitoring results were analyzed to predict the preceding displacement and settlement of the surface structures. The result of the analysis can be used to establish a proper counter measure which keeps the serviceability of the surface structures. Based on the analysis of the monitoring result, ground properties of the site were deduced and the influence of the tunnel excavation on the settlement of the foundation above the tunnel is analyzed.
