Development and growth in fertilized eggs and larvae of the Japanese geoduck, Panopea japonica reared in the laboratory (코끼리조개, Panopea japonica (A. Adams)의 수정란 발생과 유생 성장)

  • The development of Japanese geoduck, Panopea japonica, grown under culture conditions, has been examined through the morphological characteristics in fertilized egg, larvae and juvenile. Gametes were stripped from ripe broodstock and placed into two separate containers. Eggs were washed through a $40{\mu}m$ sieve and fertilized with dilute sperm solution. Developing larvae were maintained at $19{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Fertilized eggs with $81.6{\mu}m$ diameter developed to trochophores within 14 h and to D-stage larvae ($116{\mu}m$ shell length) within 27 h. Larvae were spontaneously settled at shell length of $311{\mu}m$ after 20 days. The hatching from fertilized eggs and larval rearing were normally available in $18.5-21.5^{\circ}C$, and the growth was good in a cashmilon substrate, as well as sand. After rearing of day 108 from metamorphosis, the shell length of juvenile P. japonica reached 13 mm, and growth rate of shell length of the juvenile was $117.5{\mu}m/d$.

Immune-stimulatory Effects of Fomes fomentarius Extract in Murine Macrophages (말굽버섯 추출물의 대식세포 면역반응 증강 효과)

  • In this study, we demonstrated whether the extract of Fomes fomentarius (FFE; FF extract) could be used to stimulate macrophages (RAW 264.7 cells). All four doses of FFE (5, 10, 20, and $40{\mu}g/mL$) had no significant cytotoxicity during the entire experimental period. FFE potently increased the production of nitric oxide (NO). Consistent with these observations, inducible NO synthase levels were increased by FFE in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, FFE increased the production of tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$, interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$, and IL-6 in the same cells. These stimulating effects of FFE were found to be caused by the stimulation of phosphorylation of $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ and MAP kinases (p38, ERK, and JNK). These results suggest that FFE may be used as new agents for wide application in the immune study of mushroom.

Technology of Marine Forest Construction in the Southern East Coast and Growth Characteristics of Transplanted Algae

  • We constructed marine forest to restore barren grounds which are expanding in the east coast of Korea using 2 methods of (1)seedlings transplantation method and (2)underwater floating ropes method. We transplanted 3 macroalgae species, Ecklonia cava, Undaria pinnatifida, and Saccharina. japonica to construct marine forest. Blade length of Undaria pinnatifida on underwater floating ropes was $56.70{\pm}8.69mm$ in April and grew $68.75{\pm}22.30mm$ in May and $70.75{\pm}14.36mm$ in July. Blade length of S. japonica was shown 97.95-143.00mm in April to June. Blade length of Ecklonia cava was $30.50{\pm}1.91mm$ in May, $41.55{\pm}1.84mm$ in August, $45.30{\pm}2.57mm$ in November, 2009 and $45.30{\pm}1.99mm$ in February, 2010. The survey on Dangsa area, Ulsan-city in January, 2009 found a total number of 15 algal species(1 brown algae, 14 red algae species) with the highest variety at 5m depth of A station and the lowest at 8m depth of A and B stations. The March survey showed a total of 24 species (1 green algae, 1 brown algae, 22 red algae species) with the highest variety of 11 at depths of 3m and 5m of B station and the lowest of 6 at 10m of B station. In May, total biomass was 3,755.4g (green algae 1.2g, brown algae 199.0g, red algae 3,555.2g). From January, 2009, we found that E. cava was dominant at the depths of 3m and 5m of A and B stations while Peyssonnelia capensis was dominant at the depth of 8m of A station. The 8m depth of B station was dominated by Acrosorium polyneurum. In May, Grateloupia lanceolata was dominant at 8m depth of A station while other depths were dominated by Phycodrys fimbriata. In June, the dominant species were G. lanceolata at the 3m depth, E. cava at the 5m and P. fimbriata at the depths of 8m and 10m of A station. Under B station, G. lanceolata was dominant at the depths of 3m and 5m while P. fimbriata was dominant at the depths of 8m and 10m.

  • In this paper, we propose the control method of output impedance of each cascode unit cell of distributed amplifier by connecting varactors in the gate-terminal of common gate. Compared to common source unit cell, cascode unit cell has many advantages such as high gain and high output impedance as well as negative resistance loading. But if the transistor model which is used in design is inaccurate and process parameter is changed, oscillation sometimes can occur at band edge in which the gain start to drop. Therefore, we need control circuit which can prevent oscillation, although the circuit has already fabricated, and varactor connected to gate-terminal of common gate of cascode gain cell can play that part. Measured result of fabricated distributed amplifier shows the capability of contol of gain characteristic by adjusting of value of varactors, this can guarantee the stability of the circuit. The gain is $8.92\pm0.82dB$ over 49 GHz, the group delay is $\pm9.3 psec$ over 41 GHz. All transistor which has $0.15{\mu}m$ gate length is GaAs based p-HEMT, and distributed amplifier is put together with 4 stages.

The dosimetric Properties of Electron Beam Using Lyon Intraoperative Device for Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (LID (Lyon Intraoperative Device) 이용한 수술중 방사선치료시 전자선의 선량분포 특성)

  • We have studied the dosimetric properties of electron beam using Lyon intraoperative device for intraoperative radiation therapy. The dosimetry data had compiled in such a way that a quick and correct decision regarding the cone shape, energy, and accurate calculations could be made. Using 3 dimensional water phantom, we have got the following data: cone output ratios, surface dose, $d_{max}$, $d_{90}$, flatness, symmetry, beam profiles, isodose curve, and SSD correction factors. The cone output ratios were measured with straight and bevelled cone, respectively. As the cone size and the energy were reduced, the cone output ratios decreased rapidly. With the flattening filter, the surface dose increased by electron beam to $85.3\%$, $89.2\%$, and $93.4\%$, for 6 MeV, 9 MeV, and 12 MeV, respectively. It is important to increase the surface dose to $90\%$ or more. Inspite of diminishing dose rate and beam penetration, this flattening filter increases the treatment volume significantly. With the combination of the three levels collimation and the flattening filter, we achieved good homogeneity of the beam and better flatness and the diameter of the 90$\%$ isodose curve was increased. It is important to increase the area that is included in the $90\%$ isodose level. The value of measured and calculated SSD correction factors did not agree over the clinically important range from 100 cm to 110 cm.

  • Expansion of a roadway on a soft ground can cause settlement of the existing road during embankment construction due to the consolidation characteristics of the soft soil. Many problems related to construction and maintenance, such as deterioration of the surface, decreased safety, and decreased structural stability, could affect the existing road. This scenario is especially true if the roadway foundation is a deep thick soft ground. Therefore, engineers should carefully select a proper design based on the characteristics of the soil layer. In this study, the expansion of the second branch of the Namhae Expressway was selected as the target site because this expressway has been constructing on a soft soil layer approximately 50 m thick. The original design was reviewed, problems were discussed and alternative was proposed through value engineering job plan phases: investigation, speculation, evaluation, development and presentation. In addition, the proposed alternative was evaluated on cost, function and value improvement. Compared to the original design, the proposed alternative saved cost and improved the function and overall value.

Experimental Study on Thermochemical Water Splitting Hydrogen Production Using $MnO_2/Mn_2O_3$/NaOH System Added with $ZrO_2$ ($ZrO_2$ 첨가 $MnO_2/Mn_2O_3$/NaOH 계를 이용한 열화학적 물분해 수소제조 실험 연구)

  • As one of the thermochemical water splitting hydrogen production cycles, which could be operated at the lower temperature below 1200 K, we investigated the feasibility of the cyclic operation of Ispra Mark 2 cycle with the addition of $ZrO_2$. The cycle is theoretically composed of three reaction steps; (1) 1st step($2MnO_2{\rightarrow}Mn_2O_3+0.5O_2$), (2) 2nd step($Mn_2O_3+4NaOH{\rightarrow}2Na_2O{\cdot}MnO_2+H_2+H_2O$) and (3) 3rd step($2Na_2O{\cdot}MnO_2H_2O{\rightarrow}4NaOH+2MnO_2$). From the TPR tests, the temperature ranges for $O_2$ production in 1st step and $H_2$ production in 2nd step were $550{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ and $650{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, respectively. In $MnO_2/Mn_2O_3/NaOH$ system, the formation of molten products due to the reaction between manganese oxides and NaOH were greatly decreased with the addition of $ZrO_2$. In addition, the results of a cyclic test were discussed with the viewpoint of $H_2$ production amounts and the feasibility of the process improvement.

The Phase Separation Characteristics of Bunsen Reaction with HIx Solution in Sulfur-Iodine Hydrogen Production Process (황-요오드 수소 제조 공정에서 HIx 용액을 이용한 분젠 반응의 상 분리 특성)

  • In order to confirm the effect of $HI_x$ solution on Bunsen reaction in Sulfur-Iodine thermochemical hydrogen production process, the reaction was investigated using $HI_x$ solution as a reactant. The phase separation characteristics of reaction with $HI_x$ solution were compared with the reaction using $I_2$ and $H_2O$ as reactants. Firstly, saturation points of $I_2$ in $HI_x$ solution at various temperatures were investigated to determine reaction conditions. With increasing temperature, the amounts of unreacted $I_2$ and $H_2O$ in $HI_x$ solution were increased, while impurities (HI in $H_2SO_4$ phase and $H_2SO_4$ in $HI_x$ phase) in each phase were decreased. The volumes of $H_2SO_4$ phase obtained from Bunsen reaction with $HI_x$ solution was relatively less than those obtained from the reaction with $I_2$ and $H_2O$. The difficulty of phase separation in Bunsen reaction using $HI_x$ solution may be due to the insufficient amount of $H_2O$ existed in $HI_x$ phase after reaction. Therefore, we concluded that the supplement amount of $H_2O$ should be calculated on the basis of the moles of HI and $H_2SO_4$ and added to the reaction system for good phase separation.

The Characteristics of HI Decomposition using Pt/Al2O3 Catalyst Heat Treated in Air and Hydrogen Atmosphere (공기 및 수소 분위기에서 열처리 된 Pt/Al2O3 촉매의 HI분해반응 특성)

  • In HI decomposition, $Pt/Al_2O_3$ has been studied by several researchers. However, after HI decomposition, it could be seen that metal dispersion of $Pt/Al_2O_3$ was greatly decreased. This reason was expected of platinum loss and sintering, which platinum was aggregated. Also, this decrease of metal dispersion caused catalytic deactivation. This study was conducted to find the condition to minimize platinum sintering and loss. In particular, heat treatment atmosphere and temperature were examined to improve the activity of HI decomposition reaction. First of all, although $Pt/Al_2O_3$ treated in hydrogen atmosphere had low platinum dispersion between 13 and 18%, it was shown to suitable platinum form that played an important role in improving HI decomposition reaction. Oxygen in the air atmosphere made $Pt/Al_2O_3$ have high platinum dispersion even 61.52% at $500^{\circ}C$. Therefore, in order to get high platinum dispersion and suitable platinum form in HI decomposition reaction, air heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ was needed to add before hydrogen heat treatment. In case of 5A3H, it had 51.13% platinum dispersion and improved HI decomposition reaction activity. Also, after HI decomposition reaction it had considerable platinum dispersion of 23.89%.

Effects of Co/Al and Si/Al Molar Ratios on DTO (Dimethyl Ether to Olefins) Reaction over CoAPSO-34 Catalyst (CoAPSO-34 촉매상에서 DTO (Dimethyl Ether to Olefins) 반응에 미치는 Co/Al 및 Si/Al 몰 비의 영향)

  • Effects of Co/Al and Si/Al molar ratios of cobalt incorporated SAPO-34 catalysts (CoAPSO-34) on their catalytic lifetime were investigated in dimethyl to olefin (DTO) reaction. The property of CoAPSO-34 catalysts was characterized using XRD, SEM, $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR, and $NH_3$-TPD techniques. First, the lifetime of CoAPSO-34 prepared by varying Co/Al molar ratios was improved than that of using the SAPO-34 catalyst, and the optimal Co/Al molar ratio was 0.0025. The total acid site amounts increased from 0.432 to 1.111 mmol/g with increasing Si/Al molar ratios from 0.05 to 0.20 while fixing a Co/Al molar ratio of 0.0025. However, the catalysts with too high acid site amounts were deactivated rapidly with blockages of the pores due to the fast accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the cage. Therefore, the CoAPSO-34 catalyst with a proper Si/Al molar ratio of 0.10 was the most superior in terms of the lifetime, which was improved by about 87% as compared with that of the SAPO-34 catalyst.
