  • Based on the potential inhibitors of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) as anti-inflammatory or cancer chemopreventive agents, we have evaluated the active principles of COX-2 inhibition from natural products. The methanol extract of the cortex of Eugenia caryoplyllata (Myrtaceae) showed the potent inhibition of prostaglandin E$_2$(PGE$_2$) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 cells (98.3% inhibition at the test concentration of 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$) Further, hexane-soluble layer was the most active partition compared to ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water -soluble parts. By bioassay-guided fractionation of hexane-soluble layer, eugenol was isolated and exhibited a significant suppression of PGE$_2$ production (IC$\_$50/=0.06$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$). In addition, eugenol suppressed the COX-2 gene expression in LPS-stimulated mouse macrop-hage cells. Therfore, eugenol might be a plausible lead candidate for further developing the COX-2 inhibitor as an anti-inflammatory or cancer chemopreventive agent.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate some problems related to health and to identify citizen's needs related to nutrition education program. The data were analyzed by using $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA and multiple range test. The food habits score was 70.0 of 100. The score of man was 69.0, while that of woman was 72.6. Since woman's food habit was better than man, education to man is more needed. Man's BMI was 22.5 and that of woman was 21.4. W/H ratio of man was 0.85 and that of woman was 0.80. BMI and W/H ratio increased as age increases. Systolic blood pressure was 123.5mmHg and diastolic blood pressure was 83.2mmHg. All age groups need the education of blood pressure control. Since subjects who did regular exercise were only 26.3%, these community people needed more regular exercise, specially woman. It turned out that subjects were afraid of cancer, hypertension, cerebral vascular diseases which are related with food habits. The disease or symptom having the highest mobility were dental disease, gastroenteric disorder, headache and constipation. They asked for counselling about health, diet therapy, protection methods of disease and menu planning etc. The program of education for health and good food habits should be developed according to subjects's age, sex, education etc. These results showed primary needs on the curriculum of citizen's education program for enhancing health. • Statement of problem: The meaning of the beauty has a little different nature according to a time, culture, and nation. Purpose : This study was undertaken to estimate the geometric esthetic criteria for Korean woman by analysis of facial photograph in a smiling. Material and methods: The facial photographs of 678 Korean beautiful woman were collected from Miss Korea candidates(from 1971 to 2003 year). The dento-facial composition was measured and analyzed geometrically on computer monitor using $Adobe^{(R)}$ $Photoshop^{(R)}$ 7.0. The statistical significance of the differences among the 4 decade groups was estimated by a $x^2$ test. Result : The Korean beautiful woman skewed the geometric characteristics such as the 'coincidence' (83.0%) between facial midline and dental midline, the 'normal' (96.9%) alignment and arrangement of upper anterior teeth. the 'average' (79.1%) position and 'upward' (53.4%) curvature of upper lip, the 'parallel' (85.7%) relationship between the lower lip and upper anterior incisal curvature, the 'touching' (49.9%) and 'not-touching' (44.8%) relationship between upper anterior incisor and towel lip, the 'first premolar' (54.1%) and 'second premolar' (38.9%) displayed in a smile, and the 'symmetry' (89.4%) of smile. There was statistical significance among the 4 decades in the respect of the upper lip curvature, the relationship between upper anterior incisor and lower lip, and the most posterior teeth displayed in a smile (p<0.05). Conclusion : The Korean beautiful woman showed similar results to the western esthetic criteria in the some respects and the tendency that the Korean woman had more active smiling recently.
