  • Four kinds of decoctions (Wolbi-tang, Wolbigachul-tang, Wolbigabanha-tang and Wolbi-tang with Psyllium Husk diet)was prescribed to examined the therapeutic effects on hyperlipidemia. Four decoctions prepared from the prescriptions were respectively administrated to the corpulent rats induced by a high cholesterol diet. Wolbi-tang mollified the increasing rate of the body weight, and decreased the amount of food eaten. It slightly increased the concentrations of blood Tc, blood TG, blood FFA, and lipids in feces, and decreased the contents of blood HDL-c. Wolbigachul-tang mollified the increasing rate of the body weight, and decreased the amount of food eaten. It decreased the amount of FFA and HDL-c lipids in the blood. Wolbigabanha-tang mollified the increasing rate of the body weight, and decreased the amount of food eaten. Also, it decreased the concentrations of blood glucose. However, it increased the content of blood HDL-c. Wolbi-tang with Psyllium Husk diet mollified the increasing rate of body weight, and decreased the amount of food eaten. Also, it slightly decreased the concentrations of blood TG and blood FFA, but increased the concentrations of blood Tc. Considering the above results, four kinds of decoctions(Wolbi-tang, Wolbigachul-tang, Wolbigabanha-tang and Wolbi-tang with Psyllium Husk diet) could be applied for the treatment of obesity, and Wolbigabanha-tang would be the most recommendable among them.

  • Among non-invasive blood glucose detection technologies, the optical technique is a method that uses light reflection, absorption, and scattering characteristics when passing through a biological medium. It reduces pain or discomfort in measurement and has no risk of infection. So it is becoming a major flow of blood glucose detection research. Among them, near-infrared spectroscopy has a disadvantage in that the complexity increases when analyzing signals detected due to interferences between proteins and acids that share a similar absorption function with blood glucose molecules. In this study, a non-invasive sensor system with multiple near-infrared bands was designed and manufactured to alleviate the deterioration of blood glucose detection function that may occur due to skin absorption of near-infrared rays. A blood survey was conducted to verify the system, and the degree of blood glucose response in the blood was collected as spectral data, and the results of this study were quantitatively verified in terms of correlation between the data and blood glucose.

  • The influence of estradiol on the radioactive calcium metabolism in blood, bone and young of lactating rats has been studied. Estrogen, in an amount estimated to equal that secreted in late pregnancy, was injected daily into lactating rats for 4 days along with $^{45}Ca$. On the 5th day, radioactivity of blood serum, bone, and young was compared to a similar group of lactating rats not treated with estrogen. Average gain in weight of the litters of the 2 groups was similar. However, radioactivity in serum and bones of treated with estradiol was significantly higher than in the controls. The radioactivity in litters of the 2 groups was similar. Estrogen plays a role in the retention of calcium in the animal body.

  • Objectives : Prolongation of the heart rate-corrected QT (QTc) interval has been reported to be associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. However, few studies have examined the relationship between the QTc interval and cardiovascular risk factors in young healthy people, The aim of this study was to examine the associations between the QTc interval and cardiovascular risk factors in young healthy adults. Methods : This study was performed as part of the Kangwha study, which started in 1986, and is an on-going follow-up study on blood pressure and related cardiovascular risk factors. In follow-up examinations during 2005, cardiovascular risk factors, including anthropometrics, blood pressure, blood chemistry and carotid ultrasonography, were measured, and questionnaires on health behaviors completed by 127 men and 149 women aged 25 years. The QTc interval was measured on the resting 12-lead electrocardiogram using an automatic analysis program. Results : The mean QTc interval was significantly longer in women $(419{\pm}17ms)$ than in men $(405{\pm}17ms)$ (p<0.001). A significant positive correlation was found between the QTc interval and waist-hip ratio (p=0.030) in men. Women showed a positive correlation between the QTc interval and systolic blood pressure (p=0.017). On a multiple regression analysis, the QTc interval was positively associated with the waist-hip ratio in men (p=0.012) and with the systolic blood pressure (p=0.020) in women. Conclusions : In young healthy Korean adults, the QTc interval was independently associated with the waist-hip ratio in men and with the systolic blood pressure in women.

  • Purpose : Hypertension is defined as average systolic blood pressure and/or diastolic blood pressure that is ${\geq}95^{th}$ percentile for gender, age, and height on ${\geq}three$ occasions. Knowing that blood pressure values increase in children as they grow older, the purposes of this study were to measure blood pressure by an oscillometric device and to determine normal values and percentile curves for children. Methods : Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured twice with an oscillometric device in 3,545 boys and 3,145 girls under six years of age, in Seoul. Using this data, we determined average blood pressure values and percentile curves based on gender and age; we subdivided these values into blood pressures of $50^{th}$, $90^{th}$, $95^{th}$, and $99^{th}$ percentiles, by percentile of height. The regression coefficients and standard deviations of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values were obtained from linear regression models. Results : Older boys and girls had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure values. Older boys and girls in the same percentile of height for age had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure values. Taller boys and girls within the same age group had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure values. Conclusion : Blood pressure standards based on gender, age, and height were obtained via an oscillometric method. Llimitation of this study is that the study population was not from the whole country, but exclusively from Seoul. Nonetheless, the data from this study will be helpful in diagnosing and managing hypertension in Korean children.

  • This study presents an impedance method of in-vitro characterization of the thrombotic potential of whole blood. Whole blood samples of 0.2 cc were put into a micro-cell with embedded three electrodes immediately after venepuncture at $37^{\circ}C$. Anti-coagulated blood samples were also collected for hematocrit and blood viscosity analyses. The rate of change of electron flow was measured, which indicates the inverse of the thrombotic potential. A sudden decrease in the rate of change of electron flow was observed at a time equal to approximately 110 seconds. This sudden decrease was significantly delayed in anti-coagulated samples. After the sudden decrease, the rate continued to decrease, reaching a minimum value in unadulterated samples while the change in the rate in the anti-coagulated ones was found rather moderate. Based on these preliminary findings, the present method may be of used as a new tool for the diagnosis of the thrombotic potential of whole blood.

  • This study was desiged to investigate the effects of calcium supplementation on the metabolism of sodium and potassium and blood pressure in seven healthy college women, aged from 19 to 21 years old. For this purpose, metabolic studies were conducted for two weeks. During the first week, the subjects ate experimental diet of which nutrients composition was similar to their usual intake. And during the consecutive second week, they ate the same experimental diet supplemented with 500mg or calcium daily. The results were summarized as follows : 1) Urinary excretion of sodium was significantly increased(p<0.05), but fecal excretion and retention of it was not affected by supplementary intake of calcium. 2) Potassium balance was not changed after additional intake of calcium. 3) Serum sodium and potassium level decreased significantly(p<0.05), but aldosterone and renin levels in serum were not changed by additional intake of calcium. 4) Systolic blood pressure(SBP) was not affected, but diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was significantly decreased (p<0.05) by supplementation of calcium. The above results showed that daily supplementary intake of calcium can be effective to decrease diastolic blood pressure through inducing the change of sodium metabolism in young women eating usual Korean diets.

  • This study investigated the effect of Corni Fructus (Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc.) extract on blood glucose and insulin resistance in db/db mice. Seven weeks old male mice were divided into normal control group (NC), diabetic control group (DC) and Corni Fructus treated diabetic group (DCF). Over an 8-week experimental period, Corni Fructus extract was administered orally at 500 mg/kg BW/day. Corni Fructus inhibited increase in blood glucose level during the OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test). At 8 weeks after beginning of the experiment, blood glucose level in the DCF group was significantly lower (p<0.01) than the DC group. Final fasting serum glucose and triglyceride in the DCF group were significantly lower (p<0.05) than the DC group by 32% and 41% respectively. Serum insulin did not differ among the NC, DC and DCF groups. The mRNA expression of adiponectin, GLUT 4 and PPAR-$\gamma$ in adipose tissue in the DC group were significantly lower than the NC group and they were higher in the DCF group than the DC group by 76%, 130% (p<0.05) and 43%, respectively. In conclusion, these results indicated that Corni Fructus would have antidiabetic effects via improving insulin resistance in favor of higher glucose utilization and reducing blood glucose level in db/db mice.
