Insomnia is defined as an experience of inadequate or poor-quality sleeping habit, coupled with more than one of the following symptoms : having difficulty sleeping, waking up too early in the morning or not having sound sleep. Insomnia is one of the most common complications that stroke patients experience, which interfere the patients' recovery. The authors observed two improved cases of insomnia in stroke patients by administrating traditional Korean medicine. The patients suffered from insomnia with nocturnal irritation, constipation, petechia of the tongue, thready or weak pulse. These symptoms, were diagnosed as blood stasis and we administered Hyulboochucke-tang three times a day, to improve blood circulation to remove blood stasis. After the administration, nocturnal irritation disappeared and the insomnia improved. Based on this experience, it is considered that enhancing blood circulation to remove blood stasis can be applied to the treatment of insomnia that stroke patients suffer.
The study was conducted to determine whether oak wood vinegar extract influences blood alcohol concentration and hangover syndrome in healthy volunteers. 2% wood vinegar extract was effective to inhibit increase of blood alcohol concentration after alcohol intake and showed significantly different (P<0.1) compared to placebo. By result of questionnaire of volunteers, wood vinegar extract showed effects improving hangover syndrome. In comparative study about blood alcohol concentration and hangover syndrome of wood vinegar extract and other extract that hangover improvement effect was reported, average maximum blood alcohol concentration was lowered in those taking wood vinegar extract than those taking other extract. At drinking completion 210minutes (T210), blood alcohol concentration of those taking wood vinegar extract was the lowest by 0.063% compared with other extract but was not significantly different between in those taking wood vinegar extract and in those taking other extract. However, wood vinegar extract's experimental group was the highest by 0.462 in decrement rate of blood alcohol concentration and, when did P<0.1 by significance level, indicated difference that mean statistically compared to placebo group uniquely. At those taking wood vinegar extract, the improvement rate and the aggravation rate of hangover syndrome was each 87%, 2%. Thus it was concluded that wood vinegar extract showed excellent alcohol oxidation and was effective in hangover improvement.
This study was carried out to investigate the blood groups(Aa, Ca, Dc, Qa, Ua) and antierythrocyte antibody associated with neonatal isoerythrolysis(NI) in Thoroughbred horses. The blood groups from 1,351(35 stallions, 1,316 mares) Thoroughbred horses tested by serological procedures, and antierythrocyte antibody from 52 mares by indirect antiglobulin test. The blood groups(factor) of Aa, Ca, Dc, Qa and Ua positive were 97.1%, 100%, 91.4%, 82.9%, and 17.1% in stallions, respectively, and were negative 3.5%, 6.2%, 25.1%, 18.3%, and 77.1% in mares, respectively. These mares are considered to be at risk for production of an NI foals. The antierythrocyte antibody was not detected by this technique in all mares. These results suggest that the all breeding mares without blood groups Aa(3.5%) and Qa(18.3%) should be selected a appropriate stallion to prevent of neonatal isretythrolysis during the breeding season in Thoroughbred horses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate body composition, blood pressure, blood lipids, and glucose according to obesity degree by body fat percentage in female university students. Methods: A total of 231 subjects were participated between July and December 2010. The anthropometric measures and blood analyzer were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS 18.0. Results: Percentage of body fat (PBF)-defined obesity had higher prevalence than body mass index (BMI)-defined obesity. Weight, BMI, PBF, fat mass, Waist to hip ratio (WHR), Systolic blood pressure (SBP), Diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in obesity group were higher than normal group and Soft lean mass and Low density lipoprotein (LDL) in obesity group were lower than normal group. There were significant correlations between PFB, SBP, DBP, Triglyceride (TC), High density lipoprotein (HDL), and LDL. Conclusion: In conclusion, when screening for obesity in female university students, body fat should be considered. It is needed to develop obesity management program according to obesity degree and to identify the effectiveness.
Objectives : This study aim to find out the reason why perspiration related with the Heart in Korean Medicine. Results : Perspiration is closely connected with the Heart because sweat is a kind of ultrafiltrate of the blood and the Heart conducts blood. In order to perspire, it is necessary to increase blood flow to capillary surrounding sweat glands. The Heart plays an important role in increasing blood flow to capillary surrounding sweat glands. Perspiration controls the body temperature. It must be increase the blood flow to skin in order that down the high body temperature. The Heart plays an important role in increasing blood flow. Conclusions : Perspiration is closely connected with the Heart because sweat is a kind of ultrafiltrate of the blood and there are plenty capillary surround sweat gland. The Heart controls the blood flow to skin in order to regulate of body temperature.
We evaluated the scintigraphic findings of sonographically atypical hemangioma, that is, a hypoechoic or heterogeneously hypoechoic nodule which contains hypoechoic areas more than 40% of the volume, and compared it with those of sonographically typical hemangioma in 26 patients with 31 nodules. Sonographically atypical hemangioma were 13 in 11 patients and sonographically typical hemangioma were 18 the 15 patients. Dynamic blood flow, planar and SPECT blood pool imaging was performed. In atypical hemangioma, increased blood pool activity was seen in 11 of 13 nodules on SPECT and in 10 of 13 nodules on planar image and increased blood flow was seen in 4 of 13 nodules on dynamic blood flow study. No significant difference in detecting increased blood pool activity between sonographically atypical and typical hemangioma. In conclusion, $^{99m}Tc-red$ blood cell SPECT is as useful in diagnosis of sonographically atypical hemangioma as in typical hemangioma and can be used as a confirmatory or complementary study.
In the present study, we employed the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) system to visualize the blood flow field with $1{\times}1{\mu}m^2$ spatial resolution. Based on the confocal microscopic image of red blood cells (RBCs), we performed the velocity vector field measurement and evaluated characteristics of cell migration from the cell depleted layer thickness calculation. The rat and mouse's blood were supplied into a micro glass tubes in vitro. The line scanning rate of confocal microscopy was 15 kHz for a $500{\times}500$ pixels image. As a result, the red blood cell itself can be used as a tracer directly without any kind of invasive tracer particle to get the velocity vector field of blood flow by performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique.
The aims of this study were to describe the effects of glucose-sweetened drinks on blood glucose, energy, and water intake at a meal 3 hours later. The effect of blood glucose on prandial energy intake and the relationship between water and energy intake during a meal were also determined. Twenty healthy normal-weight men were fed pizza test meals 3h after consuming four drinks of 0, 50g, 65g, and 75g glucose in random order, within-subjects design. Blood samples were measured at baseline and every 30 min after ingestion of drinks and 30min after the end of the test meal and the appetite was also assessed by visual analog test at the same interval. The results of this study showed that various glucose drinks altered blood glucose responses compared with that of water control(p<0.0001). Blood glucose areas under the curve(AUC) for glucose-sweetened drinks were significantly(p<0.05) higher than that for the control over 3 hours after a drink and 30 min after the test meal. Consumption of the glucose-sweetened drinks significantly increased(p<0.05) energy and water intake at a test meal compared with the water control, except the drink containing 75g glucose. For all drinks combined, the energy intake was negatively correlated with the blood glucose and positively correlated with the volume of water consumed at a test meal at 3 hours later.
Patients with kidney disease require frequent blood tests to monitor their kidney function, which is particularly difficult for young children and the elderly. For these people, the standard method is to evaluate serum creatinine or cystatin C or drug levels through venous sampling, but more recently, evaluation using dried blood spots has been used. This narrative review reports information from the literature on the use of dried blood spots to quantify the main markers used to detect kidney diseases. The ScienceDirect and PubMed databases were searched using the keywords: "dried blood on filter paper," "markers of renal function," "renal function," "creatinine," "cystatin C," "urea," "iohexol," and "iotalamate." Studies using animal samples were excluded, and only relevant articles in English or Spanish were considered. Creatinine was the most assessed biomarker in studies using dried blood spots to monitor kidney function, showing good performance in samples whose hematocrit levels were within normal reference values. According to the included studies, dried blood spots are a practical monitoring alternative for kidney disease. Validation parameters, such as sample and card type, volume, storage, internal patterns, and the effects of hematocrit are crucial to improving the reliability of these results.
