  • Deposited Marine Debris(DMD) can negatively affect marine ecosystems, fishery resources, and maritime safety and is mainly detected by sonar sensors, lifting frames, and divers. Considering the limitation of cost and time, recent efforts are being made by integrating underwater images and artificial intelligence (AI). We conducted a comparative study of You Only Look Once Version 5 (YOLOv5) and You Only Look Once Version 7 (YOLOv7) models to detect DMD from underwater images for more accurate and efficient management of DMD. For the detection of the DMD objects such as glass, metal, fish traps, tires, wood, and plastic, the two models showed a performance of over 0.85 in terms of Mean Average Precision (mAP@0.5). A more objective evaluation and an improvement of the models are expected with the construction of an extensive image database.

  • The one of the famous deep learning models for object detection task is you only look once version 5 (YOLOv5) framework based on the one stage architecture. In addition, YOLOv5 model indicated high performance for accurate lesion detection using the bottleneck CSP layer and skip connection function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of YOLOv5 framework according to various hyperparameters in position emission tomogrpahy (PET) phantom images. The dataset was obtained from QIN PET segmentation challenge in 500 slices. We set the bounding box to generate ground truth dataset using labelImg software. The hyperparameters for network train were applied by changing optimization function (SDG, Adam, and AdamW), activation function (SiLU, LeakyRelu, Mish, and Hardwish), and YOLOv5 model size (nano, small, large, and xlarge). The intersection over union (IOU) method was used for performance evaluation. As a results, the condition of outstanding performance is to apply AdamW, Hardwish, and nano size for optimization function, activation function and model version, respectively. In conclusion, we confirmed the usefulness of YOLOv5 network for object detection performance in nuclear medicine images.

  • This paper proposes a computer vision and deep learning-based technique for surveillance camera system for vehicle counting as one part of parking lot management system. We applied the You Only Look Once version 2 (YOLOv2) detector and come up with a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) based on YOLOv2 with a different architecture and two models. The effectiveness of the proposed architecture is illustrated using a publicly available Udacity's self-driving-car datasets. After training and testing, our proposed architecture with new models is able to obtain 64.30% mean average precision which is a better performance compare to the original architecture (YOLOv2) that achieved only 47.89% mean average precision on the detection of car, truck, and pedestrian.

  • Research on the advanced detection of harmful objects in airport cargo for passenger safety against terrorism has increased recently. However, because associated studies are primarily focused on the detection of relatively large objects, research on the detection of small objects is lacking, and the detection performance for small objects has remained considerably low. Here, we verified the limitations of existing research on object detection and developed a new model called the Small Hazardous Object detection enhanced and reconstructed Model based on the You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) algorithm to overcome these limitations. We also examined the performance of the proposed model through different experiments based on YOLOv5, a recently launched object detection model. The detection performance of our model was found to be enhanced by 0.3 in terms of the mean average precision (mAP) index and 1.1 in terms of mAP (.5:.95) with respect to the YOLOv5 model. The proposed model is especially useful for the detection of small objects of different types in overlapping environments where objects of different sizes are densely packed. The contributions of the study are reconstructed layers for the Small Hazardous Object detection enhanced and reconstructed Model based on YOLOv5 and the non-requirement of data preprocessing for immediate industrial application without any performance degradation.

  • Urban population concentration and indiscriminate development are causing various environmental problems such as air pollution and heat island phenomena, and causing human resources to deteriorate the damage caused by natural disasters. Urban trees have been proposed as a solution to these urban problems, and actually play an important role, such as providing environmental improvement functions. Accordingly, quantitative measurement and analysis of individual trees in urban trees are required to understand the effect of trees on the urban environment. However, the complexity and diversity of urban trees have a problem of lowering the accuracy of single tree detection. Therefore, we conducted a study to effectively detect trees in Dongjak-gu using high-resolution aerial images that enable effective detection of tree objects and You Only Look Once Version 5 (YOLOv5), which showed excellent performance in object detection. Labeling guidelines for the construction of tree AI learning datasets were generated, and box annotation was performed on Dongjak-gu trees based on this. We tested various scale YOLOv5 models from the constructed dataset and adopted the optimal model to perform more efficient urban tree detection, resulting in significant results of mean Average Precision (mAP) 0.663.

  • In this study, we propose a method to estimate the biomass of invertebrate grazers from the videos with underwater drones by using a multi-object tracking model based on deep learning. In order to detect invertebrate grazers by classes, we used YOLOv5 (You Only Look Once version 5). For biomass estimation we used DeepSORT (Deep Simple Online and real-time tracking). The performance of each model was evaluated on a workstation with a GPU accelerator. YOLOv5 averaged 0.9 or more mean Average Precision (mAP), and we confirmed it shows about 59 fps at 4 k resolution when using YOLOv5s model and DeepSORT algorithm. Applying the proposed method in the field, there was a tendency to be overestimated by about 28%, but it was confirmed that the level of error was low compared to the biomass estimation using object detection model only. A follow-up study is needed to improve the accuracy for the cases where frame images go out of focus continuously or underwater drones turn rapidly. However, should these issues be improved, it can be utilized in the production of decision support data in the field of invertebrate grazers control and monitoring in the future.

  • This paper introduces an edge AI-based scene-specific object detection system for long-term traffic management, focusing on analyzing congestion and movement via cameras. It aims to balance fast processing and accuracy in traffic flow data analysis using edge computing. We adapt the YOLOv5 model, with four heads, to a scene-specific model that utilizes the fixed camera's scene-specific properties. This model selectively detects objects based on scale by blocking nodes, ensuring only objects of certain sizes are identified. A decision module then selects the most suitable object detector for each scene, enhancing inference speed without significant accuracy loss, as demonstrated in our experiments.

  • Steel bolted joint is an important part of steel structure, and its damage directly affects the bearing capacity and durability of steel structure. Currently, the existing research mainly focuses on the identification of corroded bolts and corroded bolts respectively, and there are few studies on multiple states. A detection framework of corroded and loosened bolts is proposed in this study, and the innovations can be summarized as follows: (i) Vision Transformer (ViT) is introduced to replace the third and fourth C3 module of you-only-look-once version 5s (YOLOv5s) algorithm, which increases the attention weights of feature channels and the feature extraction capability. (ii) Three states of the steel bolts are considered, including corroded bolt, bolt missing and clean bolt. (iii) Line segment detector (LSD) is introduced for bolt rotation angle calculation, which realizes bolt looseness detection. The improved YOLOv5s model was validated on the dataset, and the mean average precision (mAP) was increased from 0.902 to 0.952. In terms of a lab-scale joint, the performance of the LSD algorithm and the Hough transform was compared from different perspective angles. The error value of bolt loosening angle of the LSD algorithm is controlled within 1.09%, less than 8.91% of the Hough transform. Furthermore, the proposed framework was applied to fullscale joints of a steel bridge in China. Synthetic images of loosened bolts were successfully identified and the multiple states were well detected. Therefore, the proposed framework can be alternative of monitoring steel bolted joints for management department.
