  • Lee jaema pointed out Zhugong as well as Zhang zhongjing and Hur joon to be the most worthy medical men in his book, Dong-eui-soo-sae-bo-won. Nevertheless, there has not been much research on Zhugong. This paper treats relations between contents in 'Huo-ren-shu' and 'Dong-eui-soo-sae-bo-won'. From this, we could find the reason why Lee jaema had estimated Zhugong so highly. The correlation between two books can be summarized as follows. First, both books emphasize biaoli and yinyang. Second, both books put their priority on bianbing over bianzheng. Third, Dong-eui-soo-sae-bo-won quoted the most medical cases and prescriptions from Huo-ren-shu after Shang-han-lun.

  • Objectives : Despite the applicability of Korean Medicine(KM) treatments for facial asymmetry, no relevant study has been reported. In this case report, we report the effect and safety of KM treatments on facial asymmetry by mandibular lateral displacement. Methods : Three patients suffering from facial asymmetry received twelve KM treatment sessions composed of Motion Style Treatment(MST), Yinyang Balance Appliance(YBA) of Functional Cerebrospinal Therapy(FCST), and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization(IASTM). The photos of each patient were taken before and after the treatment. And four primary reference lines were assessed before and after the treatment. Results : All subjects were improved after KM treatments on photos. However, no statistical significance was observed. Conclusions : This case report is the first to introduce the effect of KM treatments on facial asymmetry. Further well-designed, randomized, placebo-controlled trials are needed to verify these results.

  • Research purpose : Review of the systematized medical theory of Huangdi within the first series of conversations including questions and answers between Leigong and Huangdi. Conclusions : 1. "Huang-di-Nei-Jing" records the 5 theories of Huangdi's system of thinking (黃帝學派). Among these, the contents of the questions and answers with Leigong led to the establishment of the first of Huangdi's treatises. 2. In the questions and answers exchanged between Leigong and Huangdi, the Suwen (素問) Chapter deals with the areas of Yinyang, Zangfu, Cause and Mechanism of diseases, as well as medical ethics. Moreover, the "Lingshu (靈樞)" Chapter discusses distribution of meridian system, routes of circulation of energies, symptoms, acupuncture therapy and diagnosis, etc. 3. Characteristics of the medicine of Leigong and Huangdi can be summarized as follows: Firstly, 12 meridian systems of the "Jingmai (經脈)" section describes the meridian system that ceaselessly circulates in the shape of loops with the inner and outer aspects linked with each other. Secondly, regarding the methods of diagnosis, the "Yinyangleilun (陰陽類論)" section describes the method of diagnosis through palpation of pulse. In addition, the "Wuse (五色)" section describes visual diagnosis that uses five colors. The Wuhang combination of spleen, liver, kidney of "Shicongronglun (示從容論)" section also includes the Wuhang theory of "Jinwenshangshu (今文尙書)". The "Wuse" section discusses areas of the face and five colors, while the "Yinyangleilun" discusses the 'Yinyancixiongmaifa (陰陽雌雄脈法)', the "Jingmai" discusses the 'Yinyancunkoumaifa (人迎寸口脈法)', and the "Zhengsishilun" and "Fangchengshuailun" discuss 'chifuzhenfa (尺膚診法)'. Thirdly, Huangdi's school of thinking did not neglect bencao (本草) and tangye (湯液), which are discussed in the "Jiejingweilun" and "Shicongronglun" sections.

  • "Classified Assemblage of Medical Prescriptions(醫方類聚)" is a valuable material which can explain about historical records of East Asian medicine till 15th century. We can also konw what were regarded as important idea by contemporary doctors of Korean in 'Chosun' dynasty. And, Epilepsy is the one of the olddest diseases with a humankind history for a long time. All the concetps of disease including epilepsy in East Asia has been developed and specilized. So, we can find out some valuable facts from Epilepsy section in "Classified Assemblage of Medical Prescriptions". First, 'Epilepsy' was mixed with 'Mad', 'Spasm' before 7th century but after than, it had been divided into in detail. Since 14th century, we can find out that it was separated with 'Spasm' completely. In conclusion, 'Epilepsy' concept in "Classified Assemblage of Medical Prescriptions" at 15th century is similar with mordern 'Epilepsy' concept. Second, We can find out that 'Epilepsy disease' was divided into 'Five epilepsy' before 7th century, and divided into 'external cause', 'internal cause', 'external & internal cause' in 12th century. And, it also was divided into 'yin' or 'yang' epilepsy. So, 'Epilepsy' concept in " Classified Assemblage of Medical Prescriptions" at 15th century can be divided into 'yin' or 'yang' generally, and also it is similar with 'Acute and slow shock'. Especially, 'yinyang' of epilepsy is related to organs & bouls, depth & shallow, interior & exterior, not cold & heat definitely. From now on, the researches about how it had been understood in East Asia can help to find out modern significance of Korean medicine. and, it would be helpful for comprehensive study about "Classified Assemblage of Medical Prescriptions" from these researches in each section.

  • The existing interpretations and translations do not give adequate explanations about hidden meanings of the oriental theory, making it not easy for other researchers not majoring in oriental medicine to understand oriental medical classics. For other researchers who are trying to understand oriental medical classics and perform interdisciplinary co-research, we suggest there should be more detailed explanations about the hidden meaning of oriental theory such as Eumyang(陰陽, Yinyang) theory, Five-phase[五行] theory, Un-gi(運氣) theory. This paper, interpreting and translating the east(東), the west(西), the south(南), the north(北) in "Hwangjenaegyeong Somun(黃帝內經 素問)" focusing on the meaning of each character, will be a good example of such detailed explanation.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess the use of Korean medicine for treating radial nerve palsy. Methods : We searched for studies on the use of Korean medicine for the treatment of radial nerve palsy in 7 electronic databases and analyzed these studies. Results : We found 95 studies on radial nerve palsy from 7 electronic databases. We excluded 77 duplicate studies, 1 review article and 2 studies published before 2000. As a result, 15 case studies(36 patients) were included. Acupuncture(15 times), electroacupuncture(6 times), pharmacopuncture(9 times), herbal medicine(11 times), physical therapy(10 times), moxibustion(3 times), cupping therapy(1 time), chuna manual therapy(1 time) and yinyang balancing appliance(1 time) were used. LI11 for acupuncture, LI4, LI11 for electroacupuncture, bee venom as pharmacopuncture material and LI4, LI10, LI11 in pharmacopuncture point, Boik-tang gami as herbal medicine, hot pack for physical therapy, LI4, LI11 for moxibustion were the most frequently used. Conclusions : Korean medicine treatment for radial nerve palsy has been performed in various ways. However, we found limited evidence regarding Korean medicine for radial nerve palsy. Thus, we think various types of studies including more case reports, for radial nerve palsy should be performed in the future.
