A Study to Improve Bonding Strength of Strengthening Plate with Notches (노치를 이용한 보강재의 부착력 증가 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, many strengthening methods are developed and used to rehabilitate existing structures. One of the old and popular methods is strengthening with bonding steel plate. However, steel plate bonding method has a defect, which is debonding failure of steel plate before yielding of the plate due to stress concentration at the of the bonded plate. The objective of this study is the experimental verification of the improved bonding properties of a strengthening plate with notches. Two normal beams and ten strengthened beams with steel plate, which have several different notches, are tested and showed their effectiveness. Test results show that the notches of strengthening plate significantly improve post-yielding behavior, compared to normally strengthened beams. It is proved that the notches of strengthening plate increases ultimate strength 14% more than normal strengthened beam after yield strength. As for the shape of notches, arc notch is the best. and triangle notch and trapezoidal notch are the next and end welding method has no effect.

Numerical Investigation on Load Supporting Mechanism of a Pile Constructed above Underground Cavity (공동이 존재하는 암반에 시공된 말뚝기초의 하중지지 메카니즘에 관한 수치해석 연구)

  • This paper presents the results of a three-dimensional finite element analysis on load supporting mechanism of pile constructed above underground cavity in limestone rock formation. Considering a wide range of cavity conditions, the behavior of pile was studied using the bearing capacity, rock yielding pattern, stress distribution and deformation of pile head and the cavity. The results indicate that the load transfer mechanism of pile, rock yielding pattern and the reduction of bearing capacity of pile significantly vary with the location, size and length of cavity. Based on the results, graphical solutions defining the reduction of the bearing capacity with specific cavity conditions were suggested.

Numerical investigation on the flexural links of eccentrically braced frames with web openings

  • Plastic deformation of link beams in eccentrically braced frames is the primary dissipating source of seismic energy. Despite the excellent compatibility with the architectural designs, previous researches indicate the deficiency of flexural yielding links compared to the shear yielding ones because of their localized plastic deformation. Previous investigations have shown that implementing web openings in beams could be an efficient method to improve the seismic performance of moment-resisting connections. Accordingly, this research investigates the use of flexural links with stiffened and un-stiffened web openings to eliminate localized plasticity at the ends of the link. For this purpose, the numerical models are generated in finite element software "Abaqus" and verified against experimental data gathered from other studies. Models are subjected to cyclic displacement history to evaluate their behavior. Failure of the numerical models under cyclic loading is simulated using a micromechanical based damage model known as Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM). The elastic stiffness and the strength-based and CVGM-based inelastic rotation capacity of the links are compared to evaluate the studied models' seismic response. The results of this investigation indicate that some of the flexural links with edge stiffened web openings show increased inelastic rotation capacity compared to an un-perforated link.

Mechanical analysis of tunnels supported by yieldable steel ribs in rheological rocks

  • Yieldable steel ribs have been widely applied in tunnels excavated in rheological rocks. For further understanding the influence of yieldable steel ribs on supporting effect, mechanical behavior of tunnels supported by them in rheological rocks is investigated in this paper. Taking into account the deformation characteristic of yieldable steel ribs, their deformation is divided into three stages. In order to modify the stiffness of yieldable steel ribs in different deformation stages, two stiffness correction factors are introduced in the latter two stages. Viscoelastic analytical solutions for the displacement and pressure in the rock-support interface in each deformation stage are obtained. The reliability of the theoretical analysis is verified by use of numerical simulation. It could be concluded that yieldable steel ribs are able to reduce pressure acting on them without becoming damaged through accommodating the rock deformation. The influence of stiffness correction factor in yielding deformation stage on pressure and displacement could be neglected with it remaining at a low level. Furthermore, there is a linearly descending relationship of pressure with yielding displacement in linear viscoelastic rocks.

Seismic Performance Test of a Steel Frame with Multi-action Hybrid Dampers (다중거동 복합형 감쇠장치를 적용한 철골골조의 내진성능실험)

  • In this study, the effectiveness of a multi-action hybrid damper (MHD) composed of lead rubber bearing (LRB) and friction pad was verified in terms of seismic performance improvement of a frame structure. The LRB and the friction elements are connected in series, so the LRB governs the intial small deformation and the friction determines large deformation behavior. Cyclic loading tests were conducted by using a half scale steel frame structure with the MHD, and the results indicated that the structure became to have the stable trilinear hysteresis with large initial stiffness and first yielding due to the LRB, and the second yielding due to the friction. The MHD could significantly increase the energy dissipation capacity of the structure and the hysteresis curves obtained by tests were almost identical to the analytically estimated ones.

  • A new thin sandwich panel composed of an aluminum expanded metal core adhesively jointed with stainless steel face sheets is introduced, and its mechanical behavior under three-point bending is investigated. The strength and stiffness are analyzed theoretically, and the press-formability and strength enhancement are evaluated experimentally. The specimens with the specific configurations exhibit face yielding well before face-core separation, which means that the sandwich panel can be formed by a press without failure. The measured load levels corresponding to the face yielding and the face-core separation agree fairly well with the theoretical estimations. For a given weight, the sandwich panel is superior to a solid panel in terms of strength, stiffness, and press-formability.

  • Elastic-plastic methods have been used for the better prediction of the actual behavior of continuous-composite plate girder bridges in the overload and maximum load analysis. The structural evaluation using ALFD(Alternate Load Factor Design) uses the elastic-plastic analysis. The plastic rotations that remain after the load is removed can be occurred by the yielding locations of the maximum moment section. This situation can occur due to the residual stresses even if the moment is below the theoretical yield moment. The local yielding causes positive automoments that assure elastic behavior under subsequent overloads. In this study, the automoments at the piers occurred due to the unit plastic rotations and other locations were calculated by the conjugate-beam method and three-moment equation, using the nine design span with progressively smaller pier sections. The automoments were determined by the developed computer programs in this study in which the moments and plastic rotations from the continuity and moment-inelastic rotation relationships must be equal. And also the ratings of 3-span continuous composite plate girder bridges with non-compact section were carried out according to the Korean Highway Bridge Specification.

  • Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of the rock socketed pile should be well known. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanisms of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, 5 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the field test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The side shear resistance of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a few millimeter displacements, and after that, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, that in the highly /completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until with the relatively high displacement (>10 mm). The end bearing-displacement curves showed linear increase at least until with the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless rock mass conditions.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of Concrete-Filled Tubular Column H-Beam End-Plate Connections with Penetrated HT-Bolts under monotonic load. Simple bending tests are carried out with 5 kinds of specimens including beam specimen. The parameters of these tests are the thickness (T=22, 26. 30mm) of End-plates and the diameter (M=20, 22mm) of bolts. From the tests, the increasing values of yielding strength and initial stiffness of each specimen were gained as the thickness of End-plates and diameter of bolts are increasing. And the application of Bjorhovde et al and Eurocode 3 classification method by non-dimensional moment-rotation curves to the connections showed that all of them are included in rigid region as far as initial stiffness is concerned and all of them are also rigid as far as ultimate strength.
