From the on-line mass spectrometric analyese of the exhaust gaseous composition of fermentor and the material balance equations for oxygen and carbon dioxide, oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and carbon dioxide evolution rate (CER) were calculate using a personal computer (IBM PC-AT) interfaced to a quadrupole mass spectromter. The calculate OUR and CER were used for the indirect estimation of cell and substrate concentrations during the batch culture of Candida utilis. For the estimation of sustrate concentration, the yield model of Pirt was applied. It was found that the cell and substrate (glucose) concentration could be ssatisfactorily estimataed and the results showed the more accurate estimations of both fermentation state variables when OUR data were used than CER data.
Magnetorheological (MR) damper is a type of controllable device widely used in vibration mitigation. This device is highly nonlinear, and exhibits strongly hysteretic behavior that is dependent on both the motion imposed on the device and the strength of the surrounding electromagnetic field. An accurate model for understanding and predicting the nonlinear damping force of the MR damper is crucial for its control applications. The MR damper models are often identified off-line by conducting regression analysis using data collected under constant voltage. In this study, a MR damper model is integrated with a model for the power supply unit (PSU) to consider the dynamic behavior of the PSU, and then a real-time nonlinear model updating technique is proposed to accurately identify this integrated MR damper model with the efficiency that cannot be offered by off-line methods. The unscented Kalman filter is implemented as the updating algorithm on a cyber-physical model updating platform. Using this platform, the experimental study is conducted to identify MR damper models in real-time, under in-service conditions with time-varying current levels. For comparison purposes, both off-line and real-time updating methods are applied in the experimental study. The results demonstrate that all the updated models can provide good identification accuracy, but the error comparison shows the real-time updated models yield smaller relative errors than the off-line updated model. In addition, the real-time state estimates obtained during the model updating can be used as feedback for potential nonlinear control design for MR dampers.
In a strengthened bridge deck which received increased service loads, failure patterns of bridge deck vary depending on deck thickness, compressive strength of concrete, yielding strength of reinforcement, reinforcement ratio and additional strengthening ratio. General failure pattern that is most commonly reported as punching shear failure after the main rebar yields, followed by yielding of distributing rebar. In this paper, by Proposing a limit to the amount of strengthening material, a brittle failure can be prevented and a ductile failure mode similar to that developed in unstrengthened deck is derived. In order to calculated the limit strengthening ratio, the yield line theory and previously proposed plastic punching shear model have been used
Copper slag is the by-producted material on the proceeding of refining the copper. To verify applications of copper slag to vertical drain material can substitute for the sands in ground improvement, laboratory soil tests and consolidation model tests were conducted. The results of consolidation model test was analyzed as the hyperbolic method. The hyperbolic method assumes that the settlement(s) versus time(t) behavior approaches a straight line describes a hyperbolic reaction. The inverse of the slope of the line would then yield the ultimate settlement. Through in this study, copper slag is compatible with vertical drain material as like sands. Copper slag compaction pile promote the consolidation settlement.
Theoretical calculations of the combined radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium equation including the charge-particle conservations have been earned out for a multilevel hydrogen atom in quiescent prominences. Cool and dense models show the steep changes of population and radiation field in the vicinity of the surface, while these physical quantities remain unchanged for models with temperature of 7,300K, regardless of total densities. Ionization rate of hydrogen atom related with metallic line formation varies in considerable amounts from the surface to the center of model prominences cooler than 6,300K. However, such cool models cannot release enough hydrogen line emissions to explain observed intensities. Prominence models with a temperature higher than 8,000K can yield the centrally reversed Lyman line profiles confirmed by satellite EUV observations. We find that queiscent prominence with a density between $2{\times}10^{11}$ and $10^{12}cm^{-3}$ should be in temperature range between 6,300K and 8,300K, in order to explain consistently observed H alpha, beta line emissions and $n_p/n_l$ ratio.
For developing the site-specific fertilizer management strategies of crop, it is essential to know the spatial variability of soil factors and to assess their influence on the variability of crop growth and yield. In 2002 and 2003 cropping seasons within-field spatial variability of rice growth and yield was examined in relation to spatial variation of soil properties in the· two paddy fields having each area of ca. $6,600m^2$ in Suwon, Korea. The fields were managed without fertilizer or with uniform application of N, P, and K fertilizer under direct-seeded and transplanted rice. Stable soil properties such as content of clay (Clay), total nitrogen (TN), organic mater (OM), silica (Si), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and rice growth and yield were measured in each grid of $10\times10m$. The two fields showed quite similar spatial variation in soil properties, showing the smallest coefficient of variation (CV) in Clay $(7.6\%)$ and the largest in Si $(21.4\%)$. The CV of plant growth parameters measured at panicle initiation (PIS) and heading stage (HD) ranged from 6 to $38\%$, and that of rice yield ranged from 11 to $21\%$. CEC, OM, TN, and available Si showed significant correlations with rice growth and yield. Multiple linear regression model with stepwise procedure selected independent variables of N fertilizer level, climate condition and soil properties, explaining as much as $76\%$ of yield variability, of which $21.6\%$ is ascribed to soil properties. Among the soil properties, the most important soil factors causing yield spatial variability was OM, followed by Si, TN, and CEC. Boundary line response of rice yield to soil properties was represented well by Mitcherich equation (negative exponential equation) that was used to quantify the influence of soil properties on rice yield, and then the Law of the Minimum was used to identify the soil limiting factor for each grid. This boundary line approach using five stable soil properties as limiting factor explained an average of about $50\%$ of the spatial yield variability. Although the determination coefficient was not very high, an advantage of the method was that it identified clearly which soil parameter was yield limiting factor and where it was distributed in the field.
This paper focused on square steel tubular column to H-beam connections (concrete filled tubular) with an outside-type diaphragm. Based on the yield line theory and the nonlinear static FEM analysis the specification equations were evaluated by comparing them with previous result of the simplified tensile experiment[please check. The yield line theory applied to the mechanical model theory revised by K. Morita, the nonlinear static FEM analysis using abaqus/standard, the ultimate strength equation in the specification equation using the factor for long-time loading, and the yield ratio according to material. The allowable strength in the specification equations applied the safety factors of 2.2 and 2.6 in the cases with and without filled concrete, respectively. Therefore, the evaluation of strength(for the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment in this study) was considered possible through the yield line theory, the nonlinear static FEM analysis, and the specification equations. Likewise, the specification equations were seen to be an underestimate of the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment. The strength and displaced mesh in the FEM analysis approximated the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment.
This paper described the ultimate strength and deformation limit of the new uniplanar T-joints in cold-formed square hollow sections. In the configuration of the new T-joint, only a branch member is orientated to a chord member at 45 degrees in the plane of the truss. This study focused on the branch-rotated T-joints that were governed by chord flange failure in previous studies. Test results of the T-joint in cold-formed square hollow sections revealed a deformation limit of 3%B for $16.7{\leq}2{\gamma}(=B/T){\leq}33.3$ and $0.27{\leq}{\beta}(=b1/B){\leq}0.6$. The existing strength formulae for traditional T-joint were determined and a new yield-line model for the branch-rotated T-joint proposed. Finally, the strength formula on the yield-line analysis was compared with test results and the application range of the proposed formula recommended.
Well-designed steel moment connections will undergo local buckling before they exhaust their available rotation capacity, and inelastic post-buckling deformation plays a major role in defining the connection rotation capacity. An approximate analytical method to model strength degradation and failure of beam plastic hinges due to local buckling and estimation of the seismic rotation capacity of fully restrained beam-column connections in special steel moment-resisting frames under both monotonic and cyclic loading conditions is proposed in this study. This method is based on the plastic mechanism and a yield line plastic hinge (YLPH) model whose geometry is determined using the shapes of the buckled plastic hinges observed in experiments. The proposed YLPH model was developed for the improved WUF-W and RBS connections and validated in comparison with experimental data. The effects of the beam section geometric parameters on the rotation capacity were discussed in the companion paper (parametric studies).
This research introduces the Financial Effect Measurement (FEM) models which measures both the improvement and the innovation performance of Quality Control Circle (QCC) and activities of Six Sigma. Concepts and principle of Comprehensive Income Statement (CIS), Balanced Scorecard (BSC), Time-Driven Activity Based-Costing (TDABC) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) are applied in order to develop the 4 FEM models presented in this paper. First of all, FEM using CIS depicts the improvement effects of production capacity and yield using relationships between demand and supply, and line balancing efficiency between bottleneck process and non-bottleneck processes. Secondly, cause-and-effect relation of Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is used to present Critical Success Factor (CSF) effects for QC Story 15 steps of QCC and DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) of Six Sigma. The next is FEM model for service management innovation activities that uses TDABC to calculate the time-driven effect for improving the indirect activities according to the cost object. Lastly, FEM model for TPM activities presents the interpretation of improvement effect model of TPM Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and Operating Expenditure (OPEX) maintenance using profit, cash and Economic Added Value (EVA) as metrics of enterprise values. To better understand and further investigate FEMs, recent cases on National Quality Circle Contest are used to evaluate new financial effect measurement developed in this paper.
