  • This study was performed to discover the optimum operation conditions for the advanced water treatment using the ceramic membrane, introduced the first in the nation at the Y water treatment plant (WTP). The result of investigation to find the optimum operation conditions which can continue preserving the filtration performance as well as satisfying both the economics and the water quality is as follows. In the ordinary water quality condition of the Y WTP, the optimum filtration time(the backwash period), which can minimize the production of backwash waste and preserve the membrane performance was examined to be 4.0 hours on basis of institution capacity ($16,000m^3/day$). Examining the recovery rate of TMP from the chemical cleaning (CIP) discovered that the inorganic contaminants, which cause membrane fouling, such as iron, manganese, aluminum, were removed through the acidic cleaning using citric acid, whereas the membrane recovery rate was found to be low. But, on the other hand, the TMP was recovered to the initial value from the alkali cleaning using the NaOCl. Therefore, the main contaminant causing the fouling was determined to be hydrophilic organic compound( biopolymer). The membrane recovery rate is highly influenced by the temperature of the cleaning chemical. That is, the rate increased with increasing temperature.

  • Though the education of culture and art for disabled children is very important, it has not been brisk yet until recently due to 'absence of the teaching methods suitable for disability types, levels and programs.'. In this situation, cartoon contents can be used as the most appropriate tools for culture and art education for mentally retarded children. Entertainment functions and genre features of cartoon contents can motivate the applicable children to participate more voluntarily and positively and function as teaching tools for interesting activities. Of course, since it is not proper to apply the cartoon contents for normal children to Special Education Field as they are, cartoon works should be made by understanding closely the characteristics and degrees of retardation of the applicable children and applying them to the composition of cartoons. However, for the contribution of this attempt to education field, it is thought that concrete guidelines for producing cartoon contents considering the concept of various types of disability, emotion, social behavioral traits, ability of cognition, school achievements, and the characteristics of language and physical health should be necessary, and to improve the application of the developed cartoon contents so that they will not remain as superficial results, sufficient communication with the applicable children such as application to classes in the process of development is necessary.

  • Due to the stringent drinking water quality, formaldehyde will be included in Korean drinking water standard from year 2014. However, its standard analytical method has not yet been established. This study compares two analytical methods, DNPH-LC and ACFAS with respect to their analysis principles, Method Detection Limit (MDL), Limit Of Quantitation(LOQ), precision, accuracy, reproducibility, convenience, number of samples analyzed per hour and analysis cost. These methods measure absorption intensity at 360 nm by using HPLC after DNPH-derivatization (DNPH-LC) and at 410 nm by using Automated Continuous Flow Absorption Spectrophotometer (ACFAS), respectively. Reproducibility was tested by repeating the analysis 7 times using a standard solution for each method. For DNPH-LC method, MDL was $0.5{\mu}g/L$, LOQ was $1.58{\mu}g/L$ with standard deviation of $0.16{\mu}g/L$. For ACFAS method, they were $0.27{\mu}g/L$, $0.85{\mu}g/L$L with standard deviation of $0.09{\mu}g/L$, respectively. Both methods satisfied the requirement set by the Korean drinking water quality standard. Complexity of sample pretreatment procedure for DNPH-LC method may cause large error and, consequently, the analytical result will depend on the level of skill of analyst. In contrast, ACFAS method which used only one reagent equipped with an automated injection device showed little analytical error. It costs about $5.00 and $1.00 for one sample to analyze by the DNPH-LC method and the ACFAS method, respectively. Compared to the DNPH-LC method, ACFAS method provided more reliable analytical results. In terms of convenience, easiness and analytical cost, ACFAS method was demonstrated to be superior to the DNPH-LC method. The results of this study suggested that the ACFAS method could be adapted as a proper method for determining formaldehyde content in drinking water.

  • Recently, hydroxymethylfurfrual (HMF) has been highlighted as a key intermediate for the production of liquid biofuels and other valuable compounds. We used sesame roots as a biocatalyst to synthesize HMF using flask cultures. The synthesis of HMF was identified by GC-mass analysis. The highest root growth was observed in cultures with 1.0 mg/l NAA at $30^{\circ}C$, while root growth was not found in those without NAA treatment. When silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) was added, the root growth was greatest in those treated with 0.5 mg/l $AgNO_3$ and cultured at $30^{\circ}C$. In the case of HMF synthesis, its highest yield was obtained in those treated with 0.5 mg/l NAA at $25^{\circ}C$, but low HMF was detected in those treated without naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). The addition of $AgNO_$ to the culture medium showed a 8-10% reduction in HMF yield compared to that of the control, indicating its inhibitory effect on the synthesis of HMF. On the whole, an optimal culture temperature for HMF synthesis seemed to be between $25-30^{\circ}C$.

  • This study note wished to introduce special-purpose ship for algae removal that is developed by core technology of our country. The ship is consisted of main frame and adjuvant that can attach and detach as cross (+) shape of a character. The characteristics of ship are super light weight and low draft. That is consisted of four devices as suction, collection, filtration and recovering units. Among these, filtration used screen filter (mesh size 30 ${\mu}m$). Also, can separate and remove water and algae by compression air participle notion. Percentage of moisture content of concentrated algal particle was 85%. Water parted with algae finally is exhausted to water area. Removal efficiency that compare by chlorophyll-$\alpha$ concentration was about 57% (inflow: 83.2 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, outflow: 35.8 $[\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) without physical and chemical pretreatment. Forward, need to achieve effect test in various conditions (algal biomass, flow etc.) for efficiency and technological elevation of exclusion device. We wished to contribute in presuppression system construction of massive algal development that manage blue-green algae occurrence area effectively, and prevents spread as lower part of reservoir.

  • Objective : Few studies have examined the relationship between the risk of cancer and exposure to pesticides in Korea or in other East Asian that have until recently used chlorophenoxy herbicides. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the exposure to pesticides and cancer incidence. Methods : We conducted a prospective cohort study with a follow-up period of 13 years (1985-1998). The subjects included 2,687 male and 3,589 female Kangwha Island residents, Koreans aged fifty-five or more as of March 1985, who received a personal health interview and completed a health examination survey. A Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate relative risks(RR). Results : At baseline, the mean age of the study participants in 1985 was 66.4 for males and 67.1 for females. During the 13 years follow-up, a total of 300 incidents of cancer in males and 140 in females developed. In males, the total cancer incidence in the highest group was RR, 1.4 (95%. CI=1.0-1.9), p for trend=0.041, for digestive organ cancer Incidence in the highest group, RR, 1.5 (95% CI=1.0-2.3), p for trend=0.057, for stomach cancer, incidence in the highest group, RR, 1.6 (95% CI=0.9-2.8), p for trend=0.094, for gallbladder cancer incidence in the highest group, RR, 9.1 (95% CI=1.1-77.0), p for trend=0.014 were elevated according to the higher frequency of pesticide use per year. In particular, the risk of gallbladder cancer was very high. Although not significant, the risk of liver cancer was higher than in the non-exposed group (in the highest group, RR, 2.0(95% CI=0.7-5.9)). In females, although not significant, breast cancer incidence in the highest exposure group was higher than in the non-exposed group (in the highest group, RR, 4.7 (95% CI=0.5-27.9)). Conclusions : This study demonstrates that Korean farmers who use pesticides, particularly males, have a significantly higher total cancer incidence, particularly from digestive organ cancers such as, stomach, gallbladder, and liver cancer. In particular, the risk of gallbladder cancer was very high.

  • It has been known that streptomycin resistance in bacteria can occur as a results of chromosomal mutation or through gene acquisition or both. Chromosomal mutations for resistances are point mutations in the rpsL gene, which alter ribosomal protein S12. Acquired resistance has occurred when an $Sm^R$ plasmid carrying transposon Tn5393 with tandem strA-strB gene is transferred by conjugation. A total of 686 isolates of Xanthomonas smithii subsp. citri causal agent of citrus canker disease were collected from 26 citrus orchards in Jeju Island in 2003 and 2004 seasons. Forty-nine of 111 isolates from streptomycin non-sprayed orchards in 2003 season were resistant to streptomycin. Of 107 isolates from orchards sprayed one time with streptomycin, 58 isolates were resistant, and 166 of 221 isolates from orchards sprayed two times with streptomycin were resistant. In 12 orchards sprayed three or more times with streptomycin, 219 of 247 isolates were resistant to streptomycin. Twenty-five isolates of X. smithii subsp. citri were surveyed to identify the mechanisms of streptomycin resistance in this study. Twenty-one of these 25 isolates were resistant to streptomycin, and it was proven by PCR assay that 18 of the 21 streptomycin resistant isolates have the strB gene. In sixteen of the 21 streptomycin resistant isolates, it was occurred a point mutation altered codon lysine (AAG)-41 of rpsL gene to arginine (AGG). The streptomycin-sensitive isolates easily acquired the resistance by mixed culture with resistant isolates. The strB gene was amplified from the isolates that acquired the resistance by mixed culture, and one isolate of them was also point-mutated in codon 41 of rpsL gene to be resistant. In this study, most of the streptomycin-resistant isolates of X. smithii sub sp. citri in Jeju island expressed the resistance by both chromosomal point mutation and gene acquisition, and the resistance was easily acquired through conjugation by culture mixed with streptomycin resistant and sensitive strains.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of mixing with paraffin oil on rainfastness of mancozeb on citrus fruits and assay the improvement of control effect of mancozeb against citrus melanose by mixing with paraffin oil. In artificial rainfall condition (7.2 mm/hr), the attached contents of mancozeb on detached fruits were the most in treatment of mancozeb 0.2% + paraffin oil 0.1% as the contents was $7.43{\mu}g/cm^2$ after treatment of rainfall for 10 hr. In open field condition, the contents of attached mancozeb on fruits were significantly more in treatment of mancozeb 0.2% + paraffin oil 0.1% or 0.25% than the other treatments 1, 15 and 25 days after treatment 2009 and 2010 seasons. The disease incidence was significantly lower in treatment of mancozeb 0.2% + paraffin oil 0.1% or 0.25% than treatment of mancozeb 0.2% only 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons. Based on this study, it was suggested that the control effect of mancozeb against citrus melanose can be improved by mixing with paraffin oil.
