  • In 2018, the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea introduced a new system that registers national cultural heritage in street and district units. Yeongju City's Modern Historical and Cultural District was selected as the first trial region. This grouping method breaks through conservation and utilization limitations of cultural heritage in individual building units. Thus, the issue is how will such historical and cultural spaces be grouped, conserved and managed. Hence, this study identifies the current situation of buildings in the Modern Historical and Cultural Street of Yeongju and conducts an experimental survey. Based on this, the types of modern architecture were classified, and the architectural groups were extracted and categorized to preserve and utilize the architecture. For these purposes, priority groups were determined by evaluating them based on five criteria: archetype, placeness, politicalness, typicality and originality. The modern architecture in the Modern Historical and Cultural Street of Yeongju have undergone many changes. The residential transformation of small and medium-sized cities during modern times can be understood as a process of settlement and nativization.

  • This research aimed to propose an organizational system that implements a planning agreement in local small and medium sized city, Korea. To conduct this research, three successful cases were deduced using integration systems to investigate purpose and background of the planning agreement. Articles, reports, media, and participation in meetings and workshops related on this topic are used for collecting data and interview of regional activists and experts, and public officials were carried out. Among them, the case of Yeongju city that used the new integration system instead of pre-adminstration system was examined in detail. There are three local governments; Yeongwol-gun, Jeungpyeong-gun, and Yeongju city which have successfully fulfilled projects from various departments of central adminstration not projects of planning agreement. The similarity noticed between those three cases is to continue various projects from several departments of central adminstration for numerous years and contribute to regional revitalization. A successful factor was to establish organizational system and manage it for the integration plan and performance for appropriate regional and administrative characteristics. In particular, in the case of Yeongju city, organization for urban architectural management composed of civilian experts were formed, authorized status on administrative organization was established, and the function and role were identified. It is helpful to other local governments to carry out the projects of planning agreement as the case of Yeongju city is now a new method.

  • SHRIMP zircon U-Pb age dating is carried out for the Yeongju and Andong granite batholiths intruding the Precambrian metamorphic complex and Paleozoic sedimentary formations within the NE Yeongnam Massif, Korea. Dating of zircons from a hornblende-biotite tonalite and an equigranular biotite granodiorite in the Yeongju granite has yielded ages of ca. 187 Ma and ca. 186 Ma, respectively. Also, dating of zircons from a biotite granodiorite and a very coarse-grained biotite granite in the Andong granite has yielded ages of ca. 182Ma and ca. 186Ma, respectively. These data indicate that the main intrusions of the Yeongju and Andong granite batholiths occur almost at the same age. The oldest age of ca. 194 Ma has been determined on zircons from a hornblende gabbro in the Andong granite, and the youngest age of 175 Ma is obtained from the Chunyang granite pluton, mainly consisting of fine-grained two-mica granite, of the Yeongju batholith. These results indicate that Jurassic Daebo magmatism in the Yeongju-Andong area, NE Yeongnam massif, started early at the Early Jurassic with an intrusion of mafic magma, and followed by an emplacement voluminous granite magma during the middle of the Early Jurassic, and was finalized with the emplacement of relatively small amount of much evolved granite magma at the end of Early Jurassic.

The Evaluation of Historical and Cultural Authenticity of the Three Major Cultural Areas Projects - Targeting Korean culture theme park in Yeongju-Zone and World confucian scholar culture park in Bonghwa-Zone - (3대문화권 사업 계획의 역사문화적 진정성 평가 - 한국문화테마파크 영주지구와 세계유교선비문화공원 봉화지구를 대상으로 -)

  • This study targets Korean culture theme park in Yeongju-Zone and World confucian scholar culture park in Bonghwa-Zone among the Three Major Cultural Areas Projects supervised by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The study analyzes the Historical and Cultural Authenticity of each project on the basis of the reports and the report materials for meeting with related organizations. The results of the study are drawn as follows. First, through the theoretical consideration, this study drew the types of authenticity: originality, identity, specificity and visibility, which are evaluation items on the Historical and Cultural Authenticity. Second, Bonghwa-Zone succeeded in acquiring originality with tangible cultural properties but Yeongju-Zone chose a project site without it. Third, with originality, Bonghwa-zone was evaluated as having resources and concept with high traditional culture connectivity and fulfilled identity. It led the feature showing the high affinity between originality and identity. Fourth, compared to the projects of Andong-Zone in the Three Major Cultural Areas Projects, these two projects failed to acquire the distinctions since the primary and the secondary influence area and major facilities & programs coincided with those of the projects of Andong-Zone. Fifth, compared to Bonghwa-Zone, Yeongju-Zone realized visibility faithfully by the conceptual flexibility of "Korean Culture" and a large-scale development. Sixth, in terms of the Historical and Cultural Authenticity of project plan, it is evaluated that Yeongju-Zone and Bonghwa-Zone only fulfilled visibility and specificity respectively.

  • Naesung stream famous for 'sandy river', a tributary to the Nakdong River, flows through Yeongju-Bonghwa Basin, its drainage. If the dismantlement of granitic hills in basin is in final stage, weathering materials from hills into stream are finer materials like silty or sandy loam than coarse sand, because sand as weathering mantles is provided from granitic hills, in general. So the granitic hills in Yeongju-Bonghwa basin is dissecting present. As a results of the CIA analysis(A-CN-K and A-CNK-FM ternary diagram), chemical weathering of granitic grus in Yeongju-Bonghwa basin is too very weak for calcium and sodium to be dissolved and go as far as to be more weak than that of Jeongeup, Nonsan and Namwon, common granitic grus in Korean Peninsula. Therefore, the chemical characteristics of granitic hills in Yeongju-Bonghwa basin show that the alteration of weathering mantles just finished disintegration and is dissected at a standstill. Plenty of sands provided from granitic hills is filling the channel of Naesung stream.

  • This study analyzes altitude changes of riverbed at 6 bridges in the upper and lower reaches of Yeongju Dam in Naeseong River, from 2009 to 2016 just before and after the dam construction. For 5 years from November 2010 to December 2015 when the dam was under construction, approximately 0.091m of the riverbed altitude in average more than twice before the dam construction was lowered, because of the effects of riverbed excavation for riverside maintenance in the upper reaches and transport limitation of flow and sediment by the dam in the lower reaches. Between November 2009 and December 2016 when the dam was in pre-construction and post-construction stages, respectively, the most sites in this study in the upper and lower reaches showed lowering in the riverbed altitudes. On the other hand, the riverbed around Hoeryongpo closed to the river mouth seems to be influenced by channel changes in Nakdong River rather than by the dam construction.

  • Yeongju and Andong granites, located in the northeastern Yeongnam massif, reveal very similar emplacement ages but distinct initial isotopic compositions of strontium. However, previous studies used different boundaries to distinguish these batholiths. In this study, we determined Sr isotopic compositions of apatite separated from the granites of the area to find out the proper boundary and propose the location of such boundary based upon analysis.
