  • The review presented herein covers most of previous works on tidal models of the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea performed over past two decades including some earlier efforts. General description of tides in the region is given based on both numerically derived tidal charts, current ellipses and intelligently drawn empirical tidal charts. Some aspects of bottom tidal dissipation, tidal mixing, tidal sedimentation and tidal circulation utilizing the numerical tidal models are presented, and further discussions on inherent problems and development of the models are also given.

  • Genetic variation was surveyed at the mitochondrial control region (766bp) to test for the presence of genetic stock structure in the small yellow croaker, Larimichthys polyactis from the Yellow and East China Seas. Individuals of the small yellow croaker could not be distinguished on the basis of its location, as demonstrated using the neighbor-joining (NJ) method, unweighted pair-group method, arithmetic average (UPGMA) and the minimum spanning network (MSN). Analysis of molecular variance revealed no significant differences among collections of the small yellow croaker taken from the four locations (two locations each in Korea and China). Neutrality tests and a mismatch distribution analysis indicated that this species has recently expanded. Our findings suggest either that the small yellow croaker has a high migration capability that enables it to overcome the effects of genetic drift, or that this species expanded relatively recently and has not yet had sufficient time to differentiate.

  • Satellite data, with Sea Surface Temperature(SST) by NOAA and Sea Level(SL) by Topex/poseidon, are used to estimate characteristics on the variations and correlations of SST and SL in the East Asian Seas from January 1993 through May 1998. In the oceanic climate, the variations of SL shown the high values in the main current of Kuroshio and the variations of SST shown not the remarkable seasonal variations because of the continuos compensation of warm current by Kuroshio. In the continental climate, SL shown high variations in the estuaries(the Yellow River, the Yangtze River) with the mixing the fresh water in the mouth of estuaries of the saline water in the coasts of continent and SST shown highly the seasonal variations due to the climatic effect of continents. In the steric variations in summer, the eastern sea of Japan, the East China Sea and the western sea of Korea shown the increment of sea level with 10~20cm. But the Bohai bay in China shown relatively the high values of 20~30cm due to the continental climate. Generally the trends of SST and SL increased during all periods. That is say, the slopes of SST and SL presented 0.29$^{\circ}C$/year and 0.84cm/year, respectively. The annual and semi-annual amplitudes shown a remarkable variations in the western sea of Korea and the eastern sea of Japan.

  • The Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are the most important fishing grounds for the fishing industry of Korea, China and Japan which are major coastal states of these Seas. But the fishery resources in these fishing grounds are almost exhausted and also the sea region is seriously polluted. Accordingly an international joint countermeasure is necessary to recover the fishery resources and to keep the fishery a continuous industry. The authors inspected the existing fishery policies and international fishery relationship of the three coastal states, and suggested rational conservation and management regime of the fishery resources in these sea regions. 1. At present the legal status of the sea region beyond territorial sea is the high sea, for that reason the international cooperation is urgently needed to establish common regime for conservation and management of the fishery resources. 2. A series of scientific research on ecological system of fishery resources must be carried out in the sea region first of all for that purpose. 3. The existing Korea-Japanese Fishery Agreement and Sino-Japanese Fishery Agreement should be reformed to coincide with the new legal order of the UNLOS Convention, and the Sino-Korean Fishery Agreement should be concluded newly on the identical line. 4. As a conclusion, a joint conservation and management regime through a regional fishery organization or a individual conservation and management regime through the promulgation of exclusive economic zone by each state can be suggested to resolve the fishery resources conservation problem in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea.

  • Temperature variability at the upper layer related to climate regime shifts in the Korean waters was illustrated using water temperature, climate index. Three major climate regime shifts (CRS) in 1976, 1988 and 1998 in north Pacific region had an significant influence on the major marine ecosystems structure pattern. Three marginal seas around Korean peninsula; East Sea, East China Sea and Yellow Sea also got important impact from this kind of decadal shift. We used 10m sea water temperatures in four regions of Korean waters since 1950 to detect major fluctuation patterns both seasonally and also decadal shift. 1988 CRS was occurred in all of the study areas in most seasons however, 1998 CRS was only detected in the Yellow Sea and in the southern part of the East Sea. 1976 CRS was detected in all of the study area mainly in winter. After 1998 CRS, the water temperature in the southern part of the East Sea, East China Sea and Yellow Sea were going into decreased pattern; however, in the northern part of the East Sea, it was further shifted to increasing pattern which was started from 1988 CRS period.

  • An attempt has been made to establish digital bathymetric and topographic database in the form of grid point value(GPV) with an interval of one-minute horizontal space fur a wide region of seas adjacent to Korean Peninsula and also with an interval of one-arcsecond for coastal seas of Korean Peninsula. Especially terrestrial and marine data fusion work using mean sea level as vertical datum plane has been performed for one-arcsecond GPV dataset. It is believed that the compiled bathymetric dataset are reliable comparing with existing dataset so for and can be utilized for ocean simulations of intermediate scale process and also detailed coastal inundation process.

  • With a realistic geography and topography the Princeton Ocean Model is used to study the effects of topography, wind and time-varying Chanajiang (Yangtze) River discharge on the dispersion of the Chanaiiang River plume in the Yellow and East China Seas. The topographic feature of deepening offshore suppresses the offshore expansion of the discharged low salinity water while spreading along the coast is not hindered. Also the spreading of the Chanajiang River plume is very sensitive to wind conditions and the southerly wind is most responsible for the eastward expansion toward the Cheju Island. It is also shown that the influence of the Chanajiang River Diluted Water on the hydrography and circulation of the Yellow Sea including the South Sea of Korea is substantial even in the absence of tide, wind and current.

  • The Korea Meteorological Administration has been operating a tsunami warning system which is based on tsunami scenario database for the East Sea. Recently, the tsunami scenario database for the Yellow sea and the East China sea is also generated so that the tsunami warning system is extended to the whole Korean seas. Tsunami scenario database includes tsunami arrival times and heights generated by performing huge numbers of tsunami propagation simulations. A leap-frog method for shallow water equation is used for the simulation. The simulation code is parallellized via Message Passing Interface and has run on Cray X1E.

  • Topex/Poseidon satellite altimetric data are used to estimate characteristics on the oceanic and atmospheric correction factors, and the mean sea level and its variations in the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the East Sea from September 1992 through August 1994(70cycles). For the atmospheric correction factors, the variations of dry troposphere, humid troposphere, ionosphere and inverted barometer were very small as a few centimeters, but the variations of electromagnetic bias were higher than other factors. For the oceanic correction factors, the variations of ocean tide(35cm in track 127 and 60cm in track 214) showed high ranges compared to elastic tide(5cm in track 127 and 1cm in track 214) and loading tide(1.8cm in track 127 and 1cm in track 214). It should be understood that the variations of ocean free surface is mainly under the influence of, firstly, ocean tide and, secondly, electromagnetic bias. Mean sea level in the Yellow Sea are higher than in the rest of Seas. Then its range generally comprised between -60cm and 210cm with mean value of about 100cm. Also its variations showed high values in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, especially 5.689cm in Youngampo. This result is mainly due to the effects of local topography and tidal current.

  • Tidal regime change with general hydrolic condition change is examined, according to Garolim Tidal Power Plant (TPP) operation. Numerical model has been developed for the Yellow and East China Seas region, in order to consider the tidal regime change by the TPP operation. The changes of tidal elevation and tidal current inside the Garolim bay are also investigated in details, along with examining the change of the tidal flat area with operation. The field measurement for the tide and current have been carried out for the validation of the numerical model and for understanding the state of current system in the present state.
