  • At container terminals, a major measurement of productivity can be work efficiency. For improving the productivity of container crane, the more efficient container yard operation method is necessary in container terminals. Recently, container terminal operators make an experiment on the dual cycle operation, which ship loading/unloading were carried out simultaneously, for increasing the productivity of container crane. In this paper, propose a system operating efficient dual cycle methods as utilize Ad-hoc technology in distributed port operation system. The dual cycle methods that proposed recognizes position information of Y/T during an action in Ad-hoc networks in case of container transfer works by real time as load an Ad-hoc module to Y/T taking charge of a container transfer with quay and yard. Utilize Ad-hoc networks technology in an operating system of container yard, and efficiently distributed processing done Y/T to container crane compare with operation systems of the existing dedicated method, and an improvement can do an operating system of an yard.

  • For the efficient operation of container terminals, it is essential to develop optimal operation rules for marshaling yard and yard cranes. However, derision rules for conventional container terminals expose various limitations to be applied to automated container terminals. This paper introduces a development of a simulation model for evaluating various operation rules for automated transfer cranes (ATCs) and yard operation in the marshaling yard.

  • Recently, container terminal managers make an experiment on the double cycle and dual cycle operation, which ship loading and unloading were carried out simultaneously, for increasing the productivity of quay side. If, however, we make an experiment on dual cycle operation in a real job site, the efficiency is poor up to terminal operation method as YTs(Yard Tractors)' allocation method, QCs(Quay Cranes)' working speed, and position of export containers. Especially, using the existing yard operation method, it is difficult to support to dual and double cycle operation. Therefore, this paper examine more efficient terminal operation method, when terminal uses dual cycle operation. We developed a simulation model using simulation analysis software, Arena.

  • In Korea, the location of yard tractors is figured out in real time by using RFID system in container terminals. However, even though the location recognition of RFID system works fine when transfer crane is in yard operation, there are some problems when container crane is in ship operation. That is because yard tractors come one by one to each transfer crane in an order, but yard tractors come in 4 lanes to the container crane, which makes the system impossible to recognize each yard tractor separately. Therefore, we developed the infrared-ray communication system which can recognize yard tractors accurately in not only in the yard operation of transfer crane but also in the ship operation of container crane in same way in this study. The result in this study showed constant number of recognition, and the range of recognition measures 5.7m in 25m distance. The range of recognition shown in this study is enough to recognize each yard tractor passing under container crane separately.

  • Port operation is largely divided into gate operation, yard operation and berth operation. Operation strategy and optimal resource allocation for three parts are important in the productivity of the port operation.. Especially the resource allocation planning in berth operation needs optimization, because it is directly connected with the processing time in shipping. Berth planning is not independent on recourse allocation but interrelated with yard stacking area allocation. Therefore, we design the optimized module of berth planning and give priority to interrelationship with yard space allocation, while existing studies design independent resource allocation in berth planning. We suggest constraints by mathematical method, and they are related to yard stacking area allocation with existing constraints. Then we look for solutions, use tabu search to optimize them, and design optimized the berth planning module. In the performance test of optimized module design of berth planning, we find that the berth planning with yard stacking area allocation takes less processing time than without yard stacking area allocation.

  • With advancements of quay side handling equipment and technologies, congestion in terminal operation has moved to the storage yard side from the quay side. The importance of storage yard management has increased in overall terminal operation. Thus, many studies have been conducted to optimize the storage yard management of container terminals. However, there is no academic work to estimate the change of storage yard occupancy ratio by itself in the future. This paper examines the probability of storage yard occupancy ratio in the container terminal of Busan New port using the Markov chain analysis which explains probability change with passing time. The result shows that it is most likely to have the probability of maintaining a high level of storage yard occupancy ratio in the container terminal of Busan New Port.

  • The synchronized operation of a quay crane(QC) and a transfer crane(TC) increases the productivity of a container terminal. In this paper, analytical models are suggested for the optimal number and the optimal operation of the yard trucks (YTs) which travel between a quay crane and a transfer crane in a container terminal. YT may represent yard tractor, AGV and shuttle carrier. The analytical models are so simple and useful that the analysis and the results of this paper can be used not only in container terminal practices but also in many other application fields.

  • With advancements of quay side equipments and technologies, the bottleneck of port operations has moved from quay side to yard side. The yard management of a port has significant influences on the competitiveness of a port in the global shipping network. The research area of yard management has attracted a lot of attentions from both the academia and the industrial practitioners. This paper gives a comprehensive review for the studies on the yard management in container terminals. From three aspects, i.e., yard cranes management, yard vehicles management, and yard spaces management, this paper reports the advances in these three areas. Some future directions on the yard management researches are also discussed. The purpose of this paper is to stimulate more practically relevant researches in this emerging area.

  • This study compares the cycle times of handling operations of yard cranes under different sequencing rules. An operation cycle was divided into several elementary movements and formulas for the expectation and the variance of each elementary movement were analytically derived. The expected waiting time of trucks was estimated based on the given arrival rate of trucks. The previous studies focused on developing a method to make an efficient schedule of operations for yard cranes. This paper introduces several sequencing rules, such as first-come-first-served, unidirectional travel, and Z pick travel rules. In addition, a formula for estimating the cycle times of yard cranes under each sequencing rule is derived, and the performance under the different sequencing rules are compared with each other.
