  • We discuss the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of the forest canopy and floor separately based on airborne spectral reflectance measurements and simultaneous airborne land surface images acquired around Yakutsk, Siberia in 2000. The aerial land surface images were visually classified into four forest types: no-green canopy and snow floor (Type-1), green canopy and snow floor (Type-2), no-green canopy and no-snow floor (Type-3), and green canopy and no-snow floor (Type-4). The mean NDVI was calculated for these four types. Although Type-2 had green canopy, the NDVI was rather small (0.17) because of high reflection from the snow cover on the floor. Type-3, which had no green canopy, indicated considerably large NDVI (0.45) due to the greenness of the floor. Type-4 had the largest NDVI (0.75) because of the greenness of both the canopy and floor. These results reveal that the NDVI depends considerably on forest floor greenness and snow cover in addition to canopy greenness.

  • In the Sakha(Yakutia) Republic, culture and politics continue to be interwined. Shamanism recently has come out of hiding after Soviet repression, and into fashion. Images of the shaman are changing in villages, where traditional healers have maintained their practices in difficult conditions, and in cities, where a resurgence of spirit belief and healing has led to the revitalization of their nationalism. Shamans and folk healers manipulate their own images, and in turn are changed by the upheavals of politicized cultural revitalization. In this complex and interactive context, folklore about traditional shamans has become especially rich and accessible. I argue here that religion has become an idiom through which competing definitions of homeland and national pride are being shaped. Until September 2002, Yakutsk had never had a 'temple' devoted to the practice of traditional shamanic beliefs. Indeed the whole concept that a building 'Archie Jiete' could contain or represent the beliefs, values and rituals of the Sakha people was new, and highly controversial.

  • The thickness of permafrost in Eastern Siberia is from 200 to 500 meters. The seasonally frozen layer can vary from 0 to 4m depending on ground temperature and its location. The shear wave velocity varies from 80m/s in summer to 1500m/s in winter depending on soil type. When melted, large impedence will occur due to the difference between the shear wave velocity of seasonally frozen soil and that of permafrost layer. Large displacement may occur at the boundary of the melted and the frozen layer, and this phenomenon should be considered in a seismic design. In this research, one-dimensional equivalent linear analyses were performed to investigate the effects of the seasonally frozen layer on ground amplification characteristics. Soil profiles of Yakutsk and Chara in Eastern Siberia were selected from geotechnical reports. 20 recorded ground motions were used to evaluate the effect of input motions. As the thickness of seasonally frozen layer and the difference in the shear wave velocity increases, the amplification is shown to increase. Peat, very soft organic soil widely distributed throughout Eastern Siberia, is shown to cause significant ground motion amplification. It is therefore recommended to account for its influence on propagated motion.

  • In this study, the stability of trench slope was analysed in summer and winter seasons for the construction of pipelines in permafrost regions. The construction standards of Korea, Russia and UK were compared for obtaining an optimum trench shape for a pipeline of 30 in. diameter. Using the geotechnical properties of soil in Yakutsk (Russia), the stability of trench slope was analysed using Strength Reduction Method (SRM) according to the horizontal slope angle values of $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ and vertical slope angle values of $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. In both seasons, an increase in the slope angle results in a decrease in the factor of safety. The results show that horizontal slope angle of $30^{\circ}$ was not safe in summer season. At the vertical slope angle of $20^{\circ}$, trench side failure was observed, whereas, ground slope failure was observed at the vertical slope angles of $30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. Due to the solidification of pore water at temperatures below $0^{\circ}C$, cementation of soil particles take place. Therefore, the trench slope was found to be stable in the winter season at all vertical and horizontal slop angles, except for special load cases and abrupt temperature changes.

  • Recently, the need of alternate energy resources is increasing due to the global warming issue. The natural gas buried in the extremely cold regions of Alaska and Siberia is of much interest these days. However, the construction standards are needed to be used in extremely cold regions. Particularly, more research work need to be carried out on the trench stability so that the safety of the workers is ensured and the damage to the construction machinery can also be reduced resulting in smaller construction period. In this study, the process for lowering of the pipelines of 30 and 40 in. diameters in the ground conditions (silt and peat) of Yakutsk, Russia was analyzed. The slopes of the ground surface were considered as $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, and $20^{\circ}$ to be excavated in summer and winter. The analysis results show that the weight of pipelayer affects the trench stability. Numerical analysis was performed by considering the types of pipelayers, distance between the trench and pipelayer, and the distance between the pipelayers placed longitudinally along the trench. The results show that as the distance between the pipelayer and the trench decreases, the factor of safety of the slope decreases with an increase in the slope of the ground surface. When the slope of the ground surface was $20^{\circ}$, the breakout surface was anticipated to continue from the pipelayer to the trench boundary. In winter season, stability problem of the trench was not observed when the slope of the ground surface was less than $20^{\circ}$.

  • Frost heave on foundation(or ice jacking) is defined that foundation is uplifted by heav- ing force exerted around foundation from freezing of soils. This phenominon is often occurred in the light -weight structure e.g, small building, electro - telegraph pole, street light, pipe line, budge and reference point of survey. Frost heave is the most important factor in design of foundation of structure and the key issue in understanding mechanism of foundation in permafrost area. In this study is reviewed the state of the art on the analysis method of frost heave in USSR and is suggested the design method of benchmark pile. On the basis of above results, this study suggests a design chart able to do esign simply the benchmark pile in Yakutsk region.

  • In the case of arctic area long-distance natural gas transmission pipeline, it is necessary to construct capable facilities to maintain the gas pressure because the gas pressure is reduced according to the pipeline characteristics and route conditions. In order to maintain the proper NG pressure, it is necessary to secure economy considering the cost of main equipments of the compressor station, construction and operation cost when the compression ratio is shortened or increased by constructing the distance of the compressor station. Therefore, In this study, preliminary study on construction of arctic area long-distance transmission pipeline was reviewed and conduct conceptual design by constructing main equipments process that can reduce the construction cost of the compressor station in arctic area. In particular, in order to evaluate economic feasibility of the long-distance transmission pipeline in arctic area, the virtual area for Yakutsk~Aldan region(Russia) was supposed. The total pipeline length of the virtual is 533km, The scenarios for the location of the compressor station presented. The capacity estimated about the main equipments of the compressor station. As a result, the economic evaluation method reviewed which can minimize the construction cost of the compressor station.
