Effective Operation Strategies for Pooling Yard Tractors m Container Terminals (컨테이너터미널에서 야드 트랙터 풀링시스템을 적용한 효율적인 운영 전략)

  • The improvement in the terminal productivity plays a key role for container terminals to be more competitive. The productivity of yard tractors(YT) is one of the most important factor accelerating the terminal productivity. Thus, YT pooling system is newly introduced in container terminals for increasing the YT productivity. Recently, the terminals in Korea tend to adopt YT pooling system. This paper proposes the important decision factors for YT pooling work space and several types of formulations according to states of container terminals.

  • Currently at port, various trials about the improvement of operating method for raising operation efficiency of transferring equipment are made, but if the delay is occurred to quay crane due to individual team method in YT operation, the problem which even arranged YT should stop the work. Therefore, this study installed wireless location determining device within yard and measured the location of YT with real-time. Also, in order to raise the location determination effect, we converted operating method into pooling operation method and arranged YT. Through this study, we can trace the movement of YT with real-time and the work control method which anlayzes and evaluates congestion of yard objectively is prepared.

  • 최근 컨테이너 터미널의 생산성 향상을 위한 자동화가 국내외에서 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 이에 따라 자동화 컨테이너 터미널의 주요 자원을 효율정으로 운영하는 방안에 대한 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 자동화 수평 장치장을 대상으로 ATC 작업 할당 휴리스틱과 YT 배정 휴리스틱을 조합하여 시뮬레이션으로 평가해 본다. 더불어 효율적인 장치 전략과 YT 풀링 범위를 알아보고자 한다. 실험 결과 연구되는 본선 작업들을 두 기의 ATC가 하나씩 번갈아 가며 수행하도록 컨테이너를 분산 장치하고 ATC의 작업 예상 완료 시각을 고려하여 마감 시각이 가장 빠른 작업을 우선 처리하는 작업 할당 휴리스틱과 터미널 전체에서 가장 먼저 올 수 있는 YT에 작업을 배정하는 휴리스틱 조합이 가장 효율적 이었다.

  • 터미널의 경쟁력 제고, 터미널 생산성 향상이 중요한 요소라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 생산성에 영향을 줄 수 있는 요인은 다양하다. 그 중 야드 이송장비의 경우, 특정 선석크레인(QC, Quay Crane)에 야드 트랙터(YT, Yard Tractor)가 고정 할당되는 방식에서 다수 QC들의 작업을 처리하는 풀링 시스펨 방식으로 전환으로 터미널 생산성과 YT의 가용성을 높일 수 있다.

A Study on the Application of Transfer Equipment Pooling Systems for Enhancing Productivity at Container Terminals (컨테이너터미널에서 생산성 향상을 위한 이송장비 풀링시스템 적용방안에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the increase of container terminals, as the volume of terminals become distributed, the competition of preserving existing volume and inviting new volume are becoming fierce, and various ways for processing terminal volume and inviting volume are being sought. Container terminal efforts to maximize efficiency in order to improve the volume handling capability and productivity by both expansion of the latest equipment and development of the latest terminal system. There are a variety of factors that influence the improvement of productivity at container terminals. Among them, in the case of yard transfer equipment, if it were to convert from the method of a Yard Tractor(YT) being fixed allocated to a certain Gantry Cranes(GC) to a Pooling System that processes in a method that properly distributes and allocates a Yard Tractor(YT) to multiple Gantry Cranes(GC), the terminal productivity and the fusibility of YT may be increased. The KPI which is an indicator for the productivity at container terminals is GC productivity and since GC productivity cannot exceed the speed of physical GC operations, a Pooling System is applied to increase productivity which its meaning and effect is massive. Here in the Report, we produce the Pooling Algorithm system to improve the efficiency of the transported equipments in container terminal which is actually applying for this method and have compared Non pooling system with Pooling system in the fields. By introducing a transfer equipment pooling system and enhancing the productivity compared to other terminals, it may become an essential factor for increasing the continuous service quality and profitability in terms of terminal business.

The Effect Analysis on the Container Terminal Productivity according to Combination of YT Pooling and Dispatching Rules (이송장비 풀링(Pooling)과 우선순위 규칙(Dispatching rule) 조합에 따른 컨테이너 터미널 생산성 효과분석)

  • Today, container terminals are fiercely competing to attract an increasing number of containers. As a way to improve terminal productivity, this study proposes two dispatching rules for yard truck allocation priorities. First, Multi-Attribute Dispatching Rule(MADR) is an allocation method to calculate the weighted sum of multiple factors affecting container terminal productivity and priority them. Especially, the workload of the quay crane was considered one of the factors to reduce the residence time of the ship. Second, Cycling Dispatching Rule(CDR) is the effective way to increase the number of double cycles that directly affect terminal productivity. To identify the effects of combinations of pooling and dispatching, a comparative experiments was performed on 8 scenarios that combined them. A simulation environment has been developed for experiments and the results have demonstrated that the combination of terminal level pooling and Multi-attribute Dispatching could be an excellent combination in KPIs consisting of GCR and delayed departure of ships, etc.

  • Recent global supply chain, improving the efficiency of container shipping process is very important. In the overseas shipping of goods, the voyage of super containership is common to overcome amount of increasing cargo. Thus, container terminal managers make an experiment on the double cycle and dual cycle operation, which ship loading and unloading were carried out simultaneously, for maximizing the productivity of quay side. Yard Tractors(YTs) pooling methods also are introduced for increasing the efficiency of assignment of YTs. In this paper, we analyzed the efficiency of dual cycling through comparing existing pooling methods with the modified method for the dual cycling. We developed a simulation model using simulation analysis software, Arena. The result of experiment shown that the more dual cycling don't always increase the gross crane rate(GCR), which means productivity of quay cranes(QCs) per hour.

  • Recently, container terminal managers make an experiment on the double cycle and dual cycle operation, which ship loading and unloading were carried out simultaneously, for increasing the productivity of quay side. If, however, we make an experiment on dual cycle operation in a real job site, the efficiency is poor up to terminal operation method as YTs(Yard Tractors)' allocation method, QCs(Quay Cranes)' working speed, and position of export containers. Especially, using the existing yard operation method, it is difficult to support to dual and double cycle operation. Therefore, this paper examine more efficient terminal operation method, when terminal uses dual cycle operation. We developed a simulation model using simulation analysis software, Arena.

Development of Infrared-Ray Communication System for Position Recognition of Yard Tractor in Container Terminal (컨테이너터미널 내의 야드 트랙터 위치인식을 위한 적외선 통신시스템 개발)

  • In Korea, the location of yard tractors is figured out in real time by using RFID system in container terminals. However, even though the location recognition of RFID system works fine when transfer crane is in yard operation, there are some problems when container crane is in ship operation. That is because yard tractors come one by one to each transfer crane in an order, but yard tractors come in 4 lanes to the container crane, which makes the system impossible to recognize each yard tractor separately. Therefore, we developed the infrared-ray communication system which can recognize yard tractors accurately in not only in the yard operation of transfer crane but also in the ship operation of container crane in same way in this study. The result in this study showed constant number of recognition, and the range of recognition measures 5.7m in 25m distance. The range of recognition shown in this study is enough to recognize each yard tractor passing under container crane separately.
