  • YBa2Cu3Ox(YBCO) thick films were prepared by a screen printing of the powders, obtained by a coprecipitation in oxalic acid, on the Y2O3-stabilized zirconia substrates and their superconducting properties were determined. TC, JC and the orientation factor of the thick films increased with increasing temperature up to 103$0^{\circ}C$ and then the superconducting properties disappeared with further heat treatments. The optimization of JC was achieved by heating thick films at 103$0^{\circ}C$ for 7min. In this case the TC of the thick film was determined to be 87.5K. It was observed that TC of thick films depends on the orthorhombicity and JC is likely governed by a microstructure of YBCO rather than by the orientation factor.

  • YBCO films were deposited with various thicknesses from 100nm to 1.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ on single crystal $SrTiO_3$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The effects of different deposition conditions, especially different deposition rates by means of changing the pulsed laser frequency up to 200Hz, on the J$_{c}$ value were studied. For YBCO film with the thickness of 200nm, the $J_{c}$ value of $2.1MA/\textrm{cm}^2$ has been achieved under the high deposition rate of 3.2nm/s (190nm/min). The $J_{c}$ can be maintained greater than $1M/\textrm{cm}^2$ with the thickness less than 1$\mu\textrm{m}$. The X-ray analysis was used to examine the texture, crystallization and surface quality. The SEM was employed to analyze the surface of YBCO, and it was shown the surface of YBCO film became rougher with increasing the thickness. There were many large singular outgrowths and networks of outgrowths on the surface of YBCO films which lowered the density of thick YBCO film. The outgrowth network was probably the a-axis YBCO corresponding to XRD $\theta$-2$\theta$scan and $\chi$-scan which were used to characterize a-axis orientation of YBCO film. The reason for J$_{c}$ declining with increasing the thickness was studied and discussed.sed.

  • While critical properties of BSCCO wires rely considerably on grid direction upon BSCCO and have very complicated mechanism of generating a superconducting phase, making it difficult to improve properties of wires, YBCO thin-film wires which can be formed in a superconducting phase upon metal board through vapor deposition processing can get excellent direction and reduce manufacturing costs with more flexibility in improving critical properties; thus, they will be suitable for instrument application in the future. Contrary to BSCCO wires for which thick silver alloy covering materials should inevitably be used, moreover, YBCO thin-film wires have an advantage of making thickness and quality of covering materials different by usage. Such a property can be an important element to widen application of wires by presenting possibility of using thin-film wires as superconducting material for fault current limiter as well as for high power current application. In this study we intend to prepare YBCO thin-film wires with different stabilizer layers to analyze current application and current restriction properties by stabilizer layers on the basis of detailed researches on changes in current classification properties below critical value.

  • High-.ate in-situ$ YBa_2$Cu$Cu_3$$O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) film growth was demonstrated by means of the electron beam co-evaporation. Even though our oxygen pressure is low, ∼$5 ${\times}$10^{-5}$ Torr, we can synthesize as-grown superconducting YBCO films at a deposition rate of around 10 nm/s. Relatively high temperatures of around 90$0^{\circ}C$ was necessary in this process so far, and it suggests that this temperature at a given oxygen activity allows a Ba-Cu-O liquid formation along with an YBCO epitaxy. Local critical current density shows a clear correlation with local resistivity. Homogeneous transport properties with a large critical current density ($4 ∼ 5 MA/\textrm{cm}^2$ at 77K, 0T) are observed in top faulted region while it is found that the bottom part carries little supercurrent with a large local resistivity. Therefore, it is possible that thickness dependence of critical current density is closely related with a topological variation of good superconducting paths and/or grains in the film bodies. The information derived from it may be useful in the characterization and optimization of superconducting films for electrical power and other applications.

  • A new type of high-T$_c$ superconducting Josephson junctions has been prepared by Ar ion beam etching and electron beam lithography. YBa$_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) films deposited on (001) SrTiO$_3$ single crystal substrate by pulsed laser deposition were patterned by Ar ion milling with photolithography. The narrow slit with a electroresist mask, about 1000 ${\AA}$ wide, was constructed over a 3 ${\sim}$ 5 ${\mu}$m bridge of a 1200-${\AA}$-thick YBCO film by electron beam lithography. The slit was then etched by the Ar ion beam to form a damaged 600-${\AA}$-thick YBCO. Thus prepared structure forms an S-N-S (YBCO - damaged YBCO - YBCO) type Josephson junctions. Those junctions exhibit RSI-like I-V characteristics at 77 K. The properties of the Josephson junctions such as I$_c$ R$_N$, and J$_c$ were characterized.

  • The effect of silver oxide (14 wt.%) addition to YBCO compounds and electrophoretic deposition of composite particles prepared by solid phase reaction have been investigated. The results were compared with those for as-processed samples with YBCO films on Ag wire substrate. Our experiments show that the adhesion, microstructure changes, superconducting properties of these films is sensitive to the silver content and sintering conditions. Adding a small amount of PEG tends to remove cracks in the YBCO and (YBCO + Ag) films, which develop during the heating process. An attempt has been made to explain the experimental observations regarding variation of critical current density with the YBCO and (YBCO + Ag) films.

  • We investigated resistance development in $Au/YBa_2Cu_3O_7(YBCO)$ thin film meander lines during high-power faults. The meander lines were fabricated by patterning 300 nm thick YBCO films coated with 200 nm thick gold layers into meander lines. A gold film grown on the back side of the substrate was also patterned into a meander line. The front meander line was connected to a high-power fault-test circuit and the back line to a DC power supply. Resistance of both lines was measured during the fault. They were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment. Behavior of the resistance development prior to quench completion could be understood better by comparing resistance of the front meander lines with that of the back. Quench completion point could be determined clearly. Resistance and temperature at the quench completion point were not affected by applied field strength. The experimental results were analyzed quantitatively with the concept of heat transfer within the meander lines/substrate and to the surrounding liquid nitrogen. In analysis, the fault period was divided into three regions: flux-flow region, region prior to quench completion, and region after quench completion. Resistance was calculated for each region, reflecting the observation for quench completion. The calculated resistance in three regions was joined seamlessly and agreed well with data.

  • Y123 films have been deposited on $LaAlO_3$ (100) single-crystal and IBAD substrates by spray pyrolysis method using nitrate precursors. Ultrasonic atomization was adopted to decrease the droplet size, spraying angle and its moving velocity toward substrate for introducing the preheating tube furnace in appropriate location. A small preheating tube furnace was installed between spraying nozzle and substrate for fast drying and enhanced decomposition of precursors. C-axis oriented films were obtained on both LAO and IBAD substrates at deposition temperature of around $710{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ and working pressures of 10~15 torr. Thick c-axis epitaxial film with the thickness of $0.3{\sim}0.6\;{\mu}m$ was obtained on LAO single-crystal by 10 min deposition. But the XRD results of the film deposited on IBAD template at same deposition condition showed that the buffer layers of the IBAD metal substrate was affected by long residence of metal substrate at high temperature for YBCO deposition.
