  • Three film deposition systems (pulsed laser deposition, sputtering, and evaporation) equipped with reel-to-reel metal tape moving apparatus were installed and used to make meter-long coated conductor. Buffer architecture of $CeO_2/YSZ/Y_2O_3$ was deposited on Ni alloy using sputtering, evaporation, and PLD. YBCO superconducting layer was continuously deposited on buffered metal tape by PLD. End-to-end critical current ($I_c$) of 107 A at 77 K, self-field has been achieved in 1 em-wide tape (thickness 0.6∼1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, tape moving speed 54∼72 cm/hr) over 1 meter length.

  • In this study, the homogeneity of critical current, $I_c$, along the lengthwise direction in the coated conductor (CC) tape under uniaxial tension was investigated using a multiple voltage tap configuration. Initially, a gradual and homogeneous $I_c$ degradation occurred in all subsections of the tape up to a certain strain value. This was followed by an abrupt $I_c$ degradation in some subsections, which caused scattering in $I_c$ values along the length with increasing tension strain. The $I_c$ degradation behaviour was also explained through n-value as well as microstructure analyses. Subsections showed $I_c$ scattering corresponding to damaged areas of the CC tape revealed that transverse cracks were distributed throughout the gauge length. This homogeneous $I_c$ degradation behaviour under tension is similar with the case under torsion strain but different with the case under hard bending which were previously reported. This behaviour is also different with the case using Bi-2223 HTS tapes under tension strain.

  • Three group samples with difference thickness of $CeO_2$ capping layer deposited by PLD were studied. Among them, one group $CeO_2$ films were deposited on stainless steel tape coated with IBAD- YSZ and $CeO_2$ buffer layer ($CeO_2$/IBAD-YSZ/SS); other two groups of $CeO_2 YSZ Y_2O_3$multi-layer were deposited on NiW substrates for fabrication of YBCO coated conductor through RABiTS approach. The pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and DC magnetron sputtering were employed to deposit these buffer layers. On the top of buffer layer, YBCO film was deposited by PLD. The effect of thickness of $CeO_2$ film on the texture of $CeO_2$ film and critical current density ($J_c$) of YBCO film were analyzed. For the case $CeO_2$ on $CeO_2$/IBAD-YSZ/SS, there was a self-epitaxy effect with the increase of $CeO_2$ film. For $YSZ/Y_2O_3$ NiW which was deposited by PLD or DC magnetron sputtering, there is not self-epitaxy effect. However, the capping layer of $CeO_2$ film deposited by PLD improved the quality of buffer layer for $YSZ/Y_2O_3$ which was deposited by DC magnetron sputtering, therefore increased the $J_c$ of YBCO film.

  • When applying superconducting wire to power machines, an investigation needs to be carried out on the characteristics of wire phase changes in connection with the insulating layer. This study examined trends in the increase of the wire's resistance and the characteristics of its recovery from quenching by a current-applied cycle at temperatures of 90 K, 180 K, and 250 K. The procedure was conducted based on the thickness and presence (or absence) of the insulating wire layers. To achieve this, YBCO thin-film wires with the same critical temperatures were prepared with copper and stainless steel stabilizing layers. At levels (-one, three, and five-), with superior performance, polyimide pressure-sensitive adhesive tape was attached to the wires at a very low temperature. The eight prepared test samples were wound around the linear frames. The wire's voltage and current created from the phase change characteristics were measured at the wire's prescribed temperature, using the four-point probe method. The wire's resistance and recovery characteristics were examined for each cycle at temperatures of 90 K, 180 K, and 250 K.

  • The critical current, $I_c$, degradation behaviors with bending strain were investigated in a commercially available YBCO coated conductor tape. In particular, the strain reversibility of $I_c$ and the influence of repeated bending on $I_c$ have been studied. Also, repeated bending at 77 K was done in order to understand the Ie behavior under cyclic bending strains. A reversible behavior of $I_c$ has been found up to a high bending strain of 1.60% for the RABiTS/MOD processed CC sample with copper reinforcement. Under repeated bending, the Ie showed a 95% $I_c$ retention up to 100 cycles for bending strains of 1.0% or less. The n-value behavior showed a good agreement with the $I_c$ degradation behavior, representing that any cracking did not occur on the YBCO film resulting from the reinforcement provided by the copper stabilizers.

  • The purpose of this work is to develop, integrate, and implement an optical characterization method to evaluate physical properties in coated conductors and investigate the local distribution of the causes of degraded performance. The method that we selected at this moment is Raman scattering spectroscopy, which is accompanied with measurements of local supercurrent transport, phase composition, microstructure, and epitaxy quality for coated conductors that range in size up to multi-meter-length tapes and that embrace the entire tape embodiment (substrate through cap layer). The establishment of Raman spectroscopy as an on-line process monitoring tool is our eventual goal of research, but it requires very robust and cost-effective equipments. We analyzed $YBa_2Cu_3O_7(YBCO)$ thin films grown at various substrate temperatures by using Raman spectroscopy. YBCO films were grown by a high-rate electron-beam co-evaporation method. Raman spectra of YBCO films with lower-transport properties exhibit additional phonon modes at ${\sim}300cm^{-1}$, ${\sim}600cm^{-1}$ and ${\sim}630cm^{-1}$, which are related to second-phases such as $Ba_2Cu_3O_{5.9}$ and $BaCuO_2$. We propose a new method to characterize Raman spectra of coated conductors for an in-line quality control.

  • A ring comprising a coated conductor was fabricated. A ring was made first using a biaxially textured Ni tape whose two ends were connected by means of the atomic diffusion bonding technique. Then buffer layers and a YBCO film were deposited on it. All the films were well textured as confirmed by XRD pole figures. The B-H loops, where B and H are the magnetic field at the center of the ring and the applied field respectively, were measured as a function of temperature. The persistent current density (J$_c$) flowing circularly was estimated from the remanent field of B. In the range of temperature from 72K to 20K, J$_c$ changed from zero to 2${\times}$1 0$^5$A/cm$^2$.

  • To reduce the magnetization loss of a coated conductor, the striation and the transposition have to be accomplished for magnetic decoupling. The loss reduction effect in incomplete as well as complete striated YBCO CCs was reported in previous research. At the case of the incomplete striated sample, the end region of the sample is non-striated. So, it is not jointed with each other. In power applications, the joint is needed because current leads must be connected with HTS coils. In this research, the influence of end-joint methods with copper and superconducting joint on magnetization loss in striated YBCO CC and spiral winding samples are presented and compared with non-striated measured result.

  • In order to apply superconducting electric machineries such as a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) to the power grid, the single module should be connected in series to have reasonable size. Superconducting tapes in the module also should be stacked to satisfy requirements such as large operation current of the power grid. This is because a single superconducting tape has restricted applicable current capacity. Moreover especially in SFCL at the fault, there should be equal voltage distribution in series-connected SFCL modules. In this paper, we investigated the voltage distribution in fault current of series-connected YBCO coated conductors (CC). Depending on characteristics of the CC samples such as critical current, even voltage distribution could be achieved or not. In addition, the effect of stacked CC on the change of voltage distribution comparing to non-stack cases in series connection was confirmed by experiments. As the CC stacked, voltage difference could be reduced.

  • In this paper, we proposed a method to shield perpendicular magnetic fields in high Tc superconductor(HTS) tape of a shell-type HTS transformer with double pancake windings. A diamagnetism of characteristics of superconductor is used to shield magnetic field. For a shielding experiment, a proper shielding model is chosen, and several kinds of HTS are used such as a monofilament HTS tape, two kinds of multifilament HTS tapes and YBCO film disk. The effect of shielding for the perpendicular magnetic field is measured with HTSs for shielding and their utility for shielding is proved.
