  • This paper tried to find out NO generation and removal mechanisms in the space of the atmospheric pulsed barrier discharge using laser induced fluorescence method, which is a very effective approach to the measurement of spatio-temporal density of specific molecules. The propagation velocity of the primary streamer reaches about $2.7{\times}10^6$[m/s] and the secondary streamer is produced in the vicinity of positive electrode after the primary streamer finished. In this work, pulse Nd:Yag and Dye lasers are used for generating the specific wavelength of 226[nm], which is possible to excite NO molecules into $A^2{\Sigma}^+{\rightarrow}X^2{\prod}$(0,0) and fluorescence signals as the transition of $A^2{\Sigma}^+{\leftarrow}X^2$(0,2) is measured. For the effective removal of NO molecules in the plasma discharge process, the lower oxygen contents are needed and the influence of secondary streamer for the reduction mechanism of NO molecules is important

  • A novel technique for fine particle beam focusing under the atmospheric pressure is introduced using a radiation pressure assisted aerodynamic lens. To introduce the radiation pressure in the aerodynamic focusing system, a 25 mm plano-convex lens having 2.5 mm hole at its center is used as an orifice. The particle beam width is measured for various laser power, particle size, and flow velocity. In addition, the effect of the laser characteristics on the beam focusing is evaluated comparing an Ar-Ion continuous wave laser and a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. For the pure aerodynamic focusing system, the particle beam width was decreased as increasing particle size and Reynolds number. For the particle diameter of 0.5 ${\mu}m$, the particle beam was broken due to the secondary flow at Reynolds number of 694. Using the Ar-Ion CW laser, the particle beam width becomes smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system about 16 %, 11.4 % and 9.6 % for PSL particle size of 2.5 ${\mu}m$, 1.0 ${\mu}m$, and 0.5 ${\mu}m$ respectively at the Reynolds number of 320. Particle beam width was minimized around the laser power of 0.2 W. However, as increasing the laser power higher than 0.4 W, the particle beam width was increased a little and it approached almost a constant value which is still smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system. The radiation pressure effect on the particle beam width is intensified as Reynolds number decreases or particle size increases relatively. On the other hand, using 30 Hz pulsed Nd-YAG laser, the effect of the radiation pressure on the particle beam width was not distinct unlike Ar-Ion CW laser.

  • Micro shockwaves are induced in laser shock peening and their effect on metal samples is presented. Laser shock peening produces maximized internal compressive stress on metal surfaces. This research evaluated the effects of micro shockwaves from laser shock peening with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser on steel samples, through the analysis of the mechanical properties of the samples. In the experiments, a piezo material was applied to measure the micro shockwaves and the hardnesses and micro tensile strengths of the samples were evaluated.

  • Device quality indium tin oxide (ITO) films are deposited on glass substrates and ultra-thin diamond-like carbon films are deposited as a buffer layer on ITO by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 355 nm and 532 nm wavelength. ITO films deposited at room temperature are largely amorphous although their optical transmittances in the visible range are > 90%. The resistivity of their amorphous ITO films is too high to enable an efficient organic light-emitting device (OLED), in contrast to that deposited by a KrF laser. Substrate heating at $200^{\circ}C$ with laser wavelength of 355 nm, the ITO film resistivity decreases by almost an order of magnitude to $2{\times}10^{-4}\;{\Omega}\;cm$ while its optical transmittance is maintained at > 90%. The thermally induced crystallization of ITO has a preferred <111> directional orientation texture which largely accounts for the lowering of film resistivity. The background gas and deposition distance, that between the ITO target and the glass substrate, influence the thin-film microstructures. The optical and electrical properties are compared to published results using other nanosecond lasers and other fluence, as well as the use of ultra fast lasers. Molecularly doped, single-layer OLEDs of ITO/(PVK+TPD+$Alq_3$)/Al which are fabricated using pulsed-laser deposited ITO samples are compared to those fabricated using the commercial ITO. Effects such as surface texture and roughness of ITO and the insertion of DLC as a buffer layer into ITO/DLC/(PVK+TPD+$Alq_3$)/Al devices are investigated. The effects of DLC-on-ITO on OLED improvement such as better turn-on voltage and brightness are explained by a possible reduction of energy barrier to the hole injection from ITO into the light-emitting layer.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate effect of different surface treatment methods on the bond strength between aged composite-resin core and luting agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seventy-five resin composites and also seventy-five zirconia ceramic discs were prepared. 60 composite samples were exposed to thermal aging (10,000 cycles, 5 to $55^{\circ}C$) and different surface treatment. All specimens were separated into 5 groups (n=15): 1) Intact specimens 2) Thermal aging-air polishing 3) Thermal aging- Er:YAG laser irradiation 4) Thermal aging- acid etching 5) Thermal-aging. All specimens were bonded to the zirconia discs with resin cement and fixed to universal testing machine and bond strength testing loaded to failure with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The fractured surface was classified as adhesive failure, cohesive failure and adhesive-cohesive failure. The bond strength data was statistically compared by the Kruskal-Wallis method complemented by the Bonferroni correction Mann-Whitney U test. The probability level for statistical significance was set at ${\alpha}$=.05. RESULTS. Thermal aging and different surface treatment methods have significant effect on the bond strength between composite-resin cores and luting-agent (P<.05). The mean baseline bond strength values ranged between $7.07{\pm}2.11$ and $26.05{\pm}6.53$ N. The highest bond strength of $26.05{\pm}6.53$ N was obtained with Group 3. Group 5 showed the lowest value of bond strength. CONCLUSION. Appropriate surface treatment method should be applied to aged composite resin cores or aged-composites restorations should be replaced for the optimal bond strength and the clinical success.

  • An experimental study was performed to understand spray characteristics of the V type rotating fuel nozzle with orifice diameters by using high speed rotational system. The experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational system, fuel injection system and acrylic case. The droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, droplet diameters are reduced with increasing orifice diameter and the optimum injection orifice diameter is 2.6 mm. When increasing orifice diameter over than 2.6 mm, droplet diameter is not decreased with increasing orifice diameter. This is due to the irregular distribution of the liquid sheet around the inner surface of injection orifice.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristics of a Bragg grating recorded in photopolymer. We record hologram gratings using a 532 nm Nd : YAG laser in DuPont HRF 150-38 photopolymer films and analyze the diffraction efficiency versus thermal exposure conditions. For the case of recording after heating, the diffraction efficiency of the hologram is more than $70\%$ at $100^{\circ}C$ but is decreased exponentially at temperatures over $100^{\circ}C$. It is observed in the recording before heating that the diffraction efficiency of the hologram fixed by a UV light is increased to approximately $10\%$ at $100^{\circ}C$, but the holograms are erased at temperatures over $120^{\circ}C$.

  • The transparent conductiong thin films of tin oxides were prepared on pyrex glass substrates by the pulse laser deposition. In the atmospheres of vacuum, O2, and $Sn(CH_3)_4$ a polycrystalline $SnO_2$ target was ablated by Nd-YAG laser beam to deposit thin films on the substrates at room temperature, and as-deposited films were subsequently heat-treated in the air for 2 h at 230, 420 and $610^{\circ}C$, respectively. The characteristics of the thin films were examined by UV-VIS-NIR spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry, and the electrical properties were measured by four-point probe method along with film thickness monitored by the stylus method. It was observed that in the presence of $Sn(CH_3)_4$, $SnO_2$ phases were grown even at room temperature. This suggests that the microplasma producted during the laser ablation plays an important role in the dissociaation of precursor molecules.
