  • PURPOSES : Before-and-after studies of red light cameras were conducted with the aim of reducing the number of side right-angle collisions. Three different methods were used for the before-and-after studies, and the analysis results were compared. METHODS : This research used the naive before-and-after method, the comparison-group method, and the empirical Bayes method to study the effects of red light cameras on side-angle collisions. The results of the three before-and-after methods were compared and interpreted in terms of safety indications at signalized intersections. RESULTS : The research results showed that side right-angle collisions can be reduced by installing red light cameras at signalized intersections. All three methods guarantee safety improvements of 25~30% on average. With regard to the results of each method, the naive before-and-after method, the comparison-group method, and the empirical Bayes method showed safety improvements of 25.6%, 27.8%, and 29.7%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that red light cameras are an effective countermeasure to improve intersection safety. In particular, by installing red light cameras, side right-angle collisions can be reduced by up to approximately 25~30%.

  • There are many available algorithms based on the different approaches to solve the intersection problems between two curves. Among them, the implicitization method is frequently used since it computes precise solutions fast and is robust in lower degrees. However, once the degrees of curves to be intersected are higher than cubics, its computation time increases rapidly and the numerical stability gets worse. From this observation, it is natural to transform the original problem into a set of easier ones. Therefore, curves are subdivided appropriately depending on their geometric behavior and approximated by a set of rational quadratic Bezier cures. Then, the implicitization method is applied to compute the intersections between approximated ones. Since the solutions of the implicitization method are intersections between approximated curves, a numerical process such as Newton-Raphson iteration should be employed to find true intersection points. As the seeds of numerical process are close to a true solution through the mix-and-match process, the experimental results illustrates that the proposed algorithm is superior to other algorithms.

  • In numerically controlled(NC) machining simulation, a Z-map has been used frequently for representing a workpiece. Since the Z-map is usually represented by a set of Z-axis aligned vectors, the machining process can be simulated through calculating the intersection points between the vectors and the surface swept by a machining tool. In this paper, we present an efficient method to calculate those intersection points when an APT-type tool moves along a linear tool path. Each of the intersection points can be expressed as the solution of a system of non-linear equations. We transform this system of equations into a single-variable equation, and calculate the candidate interval in which the unique solution exists. We prove the existence of a solution and its uniqueness in this candidate interval. Based on these characteristics, we can effectively apply numerical methods to finally calculate the solution of the non-linear equations within a given precision. The whole process of NC simulation can be achieved by updating the Z-map properly. Our method can provide more accurate results with a little more processing time, in comparison with the previous closed-form solution.

  • 3D printing techniques can be used in various application fields and many researches have been reported. FDM (Fused Deposition modeling) can make multi-material or multi-color models with the simultaneous use of two or more filaments. In a dual-nozzle FDM printers, while the active nozzle is working, the remaining nozzle will be idle. The remaining molten resins inside an idle nozzle can ooze out unwantedly. The spill over from the resting nozzle produces unwanted remaining on the fabricated product. In this research, we suggest a method for optimizing building position of a model to minimize the unwanted spill-over that could possibly contaminate the final product. The method is based on minimizing the two intersection volumes. The first intersection volume is obtained by intersecting the volume defined by the first material and the Minkowski sum between the volume of the first material and the vector obtained by subtracting the center point of the first nozzle from the center point of the second nozzle. The second intersection volume can be obtained by reversing the role of the first and second volumes and nozzles. Some results obtained from the implementation using the Parasolid (Siemens) geometric modeling kernel is presented.

  • A traffic detection system is a device that collects traffic information around an intersection. Most existing traffic detection systems provide very limited traffic information for signal control due to the restriction of vehicle detection area. A signal control scheme determines the transition among signal phases and the time that a phase lasts for. However, the existing signal control scheme do not resolve the traffic congestion effectively since they use restricted traffic information. In this paper, a new traffic detection system with a zone division signal control scheme is proposed to provide correct and detail traffic information and decrease the vehicle's waiting time at the intersection. The traffic detection system obtains traffic information in a way of vehicle-to-roadside communication between vehicles and sensor network. A new signal control scheme is built to exploit the sufficient traffic information provided by the proposed traffic detection system efficiently. Simulation results show that the proposed signal control scheme has 121 % and 56 % lower waiting time and delay time of vehicles at an intersection than other fuzzy signal control scheme.

  • In this paper, when users choose a query image, we implemented a content-based image retrieval system that users can simply choose and extract a object region of query wanted with not only a whole image but various objects in it. Histogram is obtained by improved HSV transformations from query image and then candidate images are retrieved rapidly by a 1st similarity measure with histogram intersection using representative colors of query image. And finally retrieved images are extracted since 2nd similarity measure with banded autocorrelogram is performed so that recall and precision are improved by combining two retrieval methods that can make up for respective weak points. Moreover images in the database are indexed automatically within feature library that makes possible to retrieve images rapidly.

  • In navigation systems that use collected trajectory for routing, the number and diversity of trajectory data are crucial despite the infeasible limitation which is that all routes should be collected in person. This paper suggests an algorithm combining trajectories only by collected GPS data and generating new routes for solving this problem. Using distance between two trajectories, the algorithm estimates road intersection, in which it also predicts the correlated direction of them with geographical coordinates and makes a decision to combine them by the correlated direction. With combined and generated trajectory data, this combination way allows trajectory-based navigation to guide more and better routes. In our study, this solution has been introduced. However, the ways in which correlated direction is decided and post-process works have been revised to use the sequential pattern of triangles' area GPS information between two trajectories makes in road intersection and intersection among sets comprised of GPS points. This, as a result, reduces unnecessary combinations resulting redundant outputs and enhances the accuracy of estimating correlated direction than before.

  • Since 1990s. there has been an increasing number of traffic accidents at intersection. which requires more urgent measures to insure safety on intersection. This study set out to analyze the road conditions, traffic conditions and traffic operation conditions on signalized intersection. to identify the elements that would impose obstructions in safety, and to develop a traffic accident prediction model to evaluate the safety of an intersection using the cop relation between the elements and an accident. In addition, the focus was made on suggesting appropriate traffic safety policies by dealing with the danger elements in advance and on enhancing the safety on the intersection in developing a traffic accident prediction model fir a signalized intersection. The data for the study was collected at an intersection located in Wonju city from January to December 2001. It consisted of the number of accidents, the road conditions, the traffic conditions, and the traffic operation conditions at the intersection. The collected data was first statistically analyzed and then the results identified the elements that had close correlations with accidents. They included the area pattern, the use of land, the bus stopping activities, the parking and stopping activities on the road, the total volume, the turning volume, the number of lanes, the width of the road, the intersection area, the cycle, the sight distance, and the turning radius. These elements were used in the second correlation analysis. The significant level was 95% or higher in all of them. There were few correlations between independent variables. The variables that affected the accident rate were the number of lanes, the turning radius, the sight distance and the cycle, which were used to develop a traffic accident prediction model formula considering their distribution. The model formula was compared with a general linear regression model in accuracy. In addition, the statistics of domestic accidents were investigated to analyze the distribution of the accidents and to classify intersections according to the risk level. Finally, the results were applied to the Spearman-rank correlation coefficient to see if the model was appropriate. As a result, the coefficient of determination was highly significant with the value of 0.985 and the ranks among the intersections according to the risk level were appropriate too. The actual number of accidents and the predicted ones were compared in terms of the risk level and they were about the same in the risk level for 80% of the intersections.

  • In general, design of urban intersections are fundamentally different from rural intersections, but current urban intersection design has been appled to rural standards. This study has suggested the design standard for urban intersection grades based on the existing literature, field investigating and comparative analysis. Moreover, this study analyzes and compares the differences between urban and rural intersections, and intersections have been derived by appropriate design standards after reviewing the domestic and international grades design criteria. Site survey was performed to validate the derived design criteria by analyzing statistically to establish the design standards. Results were produced for the intersection portion grade standards by comparing the number of instructions which produced appropriate slope degree from 2.5% to 3% in normal condition and slope can be extended to 5% in some critical cases. In-situ investigation was performed to validate the produced data where slope was found from 0.0~8.6%. Additional data of accident analysis were also collected for the validation of the suggested data and correlation analysis was performed using the SPSS tool. Data were analyzed statistically using 95% significance level for vehicle-to-vehicle collided, head-on collision accident rates, where accident rates significantly correlated with the grade. Therefore, appropriate grade at the intersection should be designed and applied in order to reduce the number of accidents at the intersection. Finally, appropriate grades for urban intersections are suggested from 1-3% for normal cases and grades could extend up to 5% for unavoidable cases where extra care must be taken when designing.

  • In this study, a suitable algorithm for each BRT stop type is presented through the network construction and algorithm design effect analysis through the LISA, a traffic signal program, for the BRT stop type in the BRT Design Guidelines, Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, 2010.6. It was. The phase insert technique is the most effective method for the stop before passing the intersection, the early green technique for the stop after the intersection, and the extend green technique for the mid-block type stop. The extension green technique is used only because it consists of BRT vehicles, general vehicles and pedestrians. Analyzed. After passing through the intersection, the stop was analyzed as 56.4 seconds for the total crossing time and 29.8 seconds for the delay time. In the mid-block type stop, the total travel time of the intersection was 40.5 seconds, the delay time was 9.6 seconds, the average travel time of up and down BRT was 70.2 seconds, the delay time was 14.0 seconds, and the number of passages was 29.
