  • In this paper we present a second order PVT (parallel variable transformation) algorithm converging to second order stationary points for minimizing smooth functions, based on the first order PVT algorithm due to Fukushima (1998). The corresponding stopping criterion, descent condition and descent step for the second order PVT algorithm are given.

  • Severe root rot was observed in fields of cabbages (Brassica oleracea L.) in 2015 in China. Cardinal symptoms of this disease included root rot and wilting leaves. A fungus was isolated from diseased tissues consistently. Based on the morphological features and molecular analysis of the ITS-5.8S rDNA and D1/D2 domain of the 28S rRNA gene, it was identified as Plectosphaerella cucumerina. This is the first report of P. cucumerina causing cabbage root rot in China and the world.

  • Two new species of the lichen genus Placolecis are discovered in China, namely P. kunmingensis An. C. Yin & Li S. Wang and P. sublaevis An. C. Yin & Li S. Wang. The new combination P. loekoesiana (S.Y. Kondr., Farkas, J.J. Woo & Hur) An. C. Yin is proposed. Placolecis kunmingensis is characterized by having simple, spherical or ellipsoid, hyaline spores, and pear-shaped pycnidia; while P. sublaevis can be distinguished by its thallus forming larger aggregations with slightly flattened lobes at the thallus margin, and urn-shaped pycnidia. Descriptions, a phylogenetic tree and a key are provided for all the known Placolecis species in China.

  • Both $LiNbO_3$ and $KTiOPO_4$ samples were implanted with 350 keY $H^+$ and $He^+$ ions at different doses ranging from $1 ${\times}$\times10^{16}$ to of $5 ${\times}$\times10^{16}$ ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Single and multi-energy implantations were performed at room temperature. Mono-mode or a few modes in both $LiNbO_3$ and $KTiOPO_4$ waveguides were observed. The effect of temperature on the refractive index profiles of $LiNbO_3$ and $KTiOPO_4$ waveguids was studied. The temperature covered from room temperature, $200^{\circ}C$, 194.5 K (dry ice) and 77K (liquid nitrogen). Different mechanisms are needed to interpret the observed behavior. A n, increased mono-mode $LiNbO_3$ waveguide was formed by multi-energy keV $He^+$ ions.
