Surface Analysis of Plasma-treated PDMS by XPS and Surface Voltage Decay

  • Surface states of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) treated by plasma were investigated by the analysis by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and surface voltage decay. Plasma treatment causes the silica-like(SiO$\_$x/, x=3∼4) oxidative layer, which is confirmed with XPS, and lowers surface resistivity from 1.78$\times$1014 Ω/square to 1.09$\times$10$\^$13/ Ω/square with increasing the plasma treatment time. By measuring the decay time constant of surface voltage, the calculated surface resistivity was compared with the value directly measured by a voltage-current method, so good agreement between two methods was obtained. It was observed that the plasma treatment led to decrease of the thermal activation energy of the surface conduction from 31.0 kJ/mol of untreated specimen to 21.8 kJ/mol. It is found that our results allow the examination of effects of plasma on electrical properties of PDMS.

XPS STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF LOW-ENERGY ELECTRON IRRADIATION ON DNA DAMAGE BY Fe3+ ION

  • We have employed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique to examine the combined effects of low-energy electron (LEE) irradiation and $Fe^{3+}$ ion on DNA damage. pBR322 plasmid DNA extracted from E. coli ER2420 was used for preparing DNA-$Fe^{3+}$ sample. The C1s XPS spectra were scanned for LEE-irradiated and LEE-unirradiated samples and then curve-fitted. For the samples with LEE irradiation only or with Fe ion only, no significant changes from pure DNA samples were observed - a single effect of either $Fe^{3+}$ ion or LEE irradiation did not cause a significant damage. However, when these two components were combined, the DNA damage was increased quite significantly, compared to the sum of DNA damages caused by $Fe^{3+}$ ion and by LEE irradiation independently. This observation is consistent with our previous results [Radiat. Res. 177, 775 (2012)] which was done using gel-electrophoresis technique. Partial interpretation of the observed spectrum peaks was also attempted.

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study of Cobalt Supported Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes Prepared by Different Precursors

  • The effect of cobalt precursor on the structure of Co supported multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). MWCNTs were treated with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids and decorated with cobalt and/or cobalt oxides via aqueous impregnation solutions of cobalt nitrate or cobalt acetate followed by reduction in hydrogen. XPS was mainly used to investigate the phase of cobalt on MWCNTs after reduction with $H_2$ flow at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Higher cobalt-nanoparticle dispersion was found in the MWCNTS prepared via cobalt nitrate decomposition. A typical XPS spectrum of Co 2p showed the peaks at binding energy (BE) values equal to 781 and 797 eV, respectively. It is found that cobalt nitrate supported MWCNTs is more dispersive and have catalytic activity than that of cobalt acetate supported MWCNTs at same preparation condition such as concentration of precursor solution and reduction environment.

CO Adsorption and Reaction on Clean and Zn-deposited Au(211) surface

  • Crucially, effective catalysts must be capable of efficiently catalyzing the protonation of adsorbed CO to adsorbed CHO or COH. One of the strategies is alloying with metals with higher oxygen affinity and Au-Zn alloy is one of the best candidates. At first, we made Au-Zn alloy using vacuum evaporating method. Zn was deposited on the Au(211) surface and the amount was estimated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) using the relative sensitivity of Au 4f and Zn 3d. We investigated CO adsorption on a clean Au(211) and Au-Zn alloy using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and XPS. From the TPD results, we can conclude that the presence of the particular step sites at the Au(211) surface imparts stronger CO bonding and Zn atoms are sitting on the step sites at the Au(211) when Zn is deposited. The XPS results show the oxygen atoms of CO bond Zn atoms on Au-Zn surface. It should be an evidence that alloying Zn atoms that has high oxygen affinity into an electrocatalyst may allow CHO* to bind to the surface through both the carbon and oxygen atoms.

현장모형실험을 통한 자갈궤도와 콘크리트궤도의 동결심도 및 동상량 측정 (Field Model Tests on Frost Penetration Depths and Frost Heave Amounts in Ballast track and Concrete track)

  • 철도 현장에 실험용 자갈궤도와 콘크리트궤도를 설치한 후 겨울철에 동결심도와 동상량을 측정하였다. 그 결과 같은 동결지수일 때 자갈궤도보다 콘크리트궤도의 동결심도가 깊게 나타나는 경향을 보였다. 또한 자갈궤도는 하부에 XPS, PE골재층을 포설할 경우 동결심도가 크게 감소하였고, 콘크리트궤도에서는 입도조정층의 두께를 늘릴 경우 동결심도가 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 동상량 역시 자갈궤도에서는 하부에 XPS, PE골재층을 설치할 경우 감소하였고, 콘크리트궤도에서는 입도조정층의 두께를 증가시킬 경우 감소하는 경향을 보였다.

원격 플라즈마 중합된 메틸메타크릴레이트 필름의 분광학적 분석 (Spectroscopic Analysis of the Remote-plasma-polymerized Methyl Methacrylate Film)

  • 메틸 메타크릴레이트 분자를 전구체로 사용하여 원격 플라즈마 방식으로 중합체를 합성하는 반응에서 플라즈마 출력, 반응 압력 및 직접-간접 플라즈마 방식이 필름의 성장속도 및 화학결합 구조에 미치는 영향을 조사하였으며, FT-IR, XPS 등 분광학적 분석과 Langmvir 탐침을 사용한 플라즈마 특성 진단 결과와 함께 고찰하였다. 플라즈마 출력과 반응 압력이 증가하면 성장속도가 증가하지만 특정 영역을 넘어서면 식각 효과와 잦은 충돌로 인해 활성화 효율이 낮아져 다시 감소하였다. 중합 필름의 FT-IR과 XPS 분석 결과, 필름 내 탄소/산소 조성비는 플라즈마 출력이 커질수록 증가하였으며, 탄화수소성 C-C 탄소 조성비는 증가하는 반면 에스터성 COO 탄소 조성비는 감소하였다. 직접 플라즈마법이 간접 플라즈마법에 비해 필름의 성장속도는 2~5배 빠르지만, 전구체의 분자 구조를 유지하기 위해서는 간접 플라즈마법이 유리함을 확인하였다.

$BaTiO_3$의 입도와 분체특성과의 상관 관계 연구 (Characterization of relationship between particle size and powder properties for $BaTiO_3$)

  • 수열합성법에 의해 제조된 티탄산바륨 (BT01, BT02, BT03, BT04, BT05)의 입자크기와 분체특성과의 상관관계를 비표면적, 제타전위, XPS, XRD 및 SEM에 의해 조사하였다. 레이져광산법에 의해 측정된 입자의 크기는 비표면적과 XRD를 통해 결정된 격자이방성과 밀접한 관계가 있음을 보였다. 분말의 비표면적은 입자의 크기가 증가함에 따라 감소하였으며, BT03 시료는 동일한 입자크기의 BT04에 비하여 큰 비표면적을 보였으며, 이는 입자들의 응집에 기인하는 것으로 SEM사진 및 XRD 분석을 통하여 밝혀졌다. 입자의 크기가 증가함에 따라 제타전위는 증가하는 경향을 보였으며, BT02와 BT03 분말은 다른 분말에 비하여 제타전위가 큰 음의 값을 나타내었다. XPS 분석결과 분쇄시 티탄산바륨과 물 사이의 반응에 의한 $Ba^{2+}$ 이온의 용출과 관련이 있는 것으로 분석되었다.

표면 조성분석의 정량화를 위한 Pt-Co 합금박막 표준시료의 개발 및 공동분석 (Development and Round Robin Test of Pt-Co Alloy Thin Film Standard Materials for the Quantification of Surface Compositional Analysis)

  • Si 기판 위에 3종의 Pt-Co 합금박막 (Pt66-Co34, Pt40-Co60, Pt18-Co82)과 순수한 Pt, Co 박막 시료를 제작하여 표면 조성분석의 정량화 및 표준화를 위한 표준시료로 제안하 였다. in-istu X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)분석에 의해 증착된 이원 합금박막의 조성이 정확히 조절되었으며, 합금박막의 실제 조성은 유도결합플라즈마-원자방출분광법 (inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy: ICP-AES)과 러더퍼드 후방산 란분광법(Ruthford back-scattering spectrometry: RBS)에 의해 결정되었다. in-situ XPS 결과와 ICP에 의한 조성을 비교한 결과 매질 효과를 고려하면 비교적 정확한 조성을 구할 수 있음이 확인되었다. 이 시료를 이용한 XPS와 Auger electron spectroscopy(AES)에 의한 국내 공동분석 결과는 약4%내외의 큰 편차를 보이고 있지만, 평균 조성 값은 약1%의 오차 범위 내에서 두 방법에 의한 결과가 서로 잘 일치하였다. 이온빔 스퍼터링에 의해 Pt조성이 증가된 표면층이 형성되어 정확한 조성분석을 위해서는 선택스퍼터링에 의한 표면 변형을 정량적으로 함을 알았다.

Seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete building structures founded on an XPS layer

  • According to the new directives about the rational and efficient use of energy, thermal bridges in buildings have to be avoided, and the thermal insulation (TI) layer should run without interruptions all around the building - even under its foundations. The paper deals with the seismic response of multi-storeyed reinforced concrete (RC) frame building structures founded on an extruded polystyrene (XPS) layer placed beneath the foundation slab. The purpose of the paper is to elucidate the problem of buildings founded on a TI layer from the seismic resistance point of view, to assess the seismic behaviour of such buildings, and to search for the critical parameters which can affect the structural and XPS layer response. Nonlinear dynamic and static analyses were performed, and the seismic response of fixed-base (FB) and thermally insulated (TI) variants of nonlinear RC building models were compared. Soil-structure interaction was also taken into account for different types of soil. The results showed that the use of a TI layer beneath the foundation slab of a superstructure generally induces a higher peak response compared to that of a corresponding system without TI beneath the foundation slab. In the case of stiff structures located on firm soil, amplification of the response might be substantial and could result in exceedance of the superstructure's moment-rotation plastic hinge capacities or allowable lateral roof and interstorey drift displacements. In the case of heavier, slenderer, and higher buildings subjected to stronger seismic excitations, the overall response is governed by the rocking mode of oscillation, and as a consequence the compressive strength of the XPS could be insufficient. On the other hand, in the case of low-rise and light-weight buildings, the friction capacity between the layers of the applied TI foundation set might be exceeded so that sliding could occur.

A Method for Absolute Determination of the Surface Areal Density of Functional Groups in Organic Thin Films

  • To develop a methodology for absolute determination of the surface areal density of functional groups on organic and bio thin films, medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) spectroscopy was utilized to provide references for calibration of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) or Fourier transformation-infrared (FT-IR) intensities. By using the MEIS, XPS, and FT-IR techniques, we were able to analyze the organic thin film of a Ru dye compound ($C_{58}H_{86}O_8N_8S_2Ru$), which consists of one Ru atom and various stoichiometric functional groups. From the MEIS analysis, the absolute surface areal density of Ru atoms (or Ru dye molecules) was determined. The surface areal densities of stoichiometric functional groups in the Ru dye compound were used as references for the calibration of XPS and FT-IR intensities for each functional group. The complementary use of MEIS, XPS, and FT-IR to determine the absolute surface areal density of functional groups on organic and bio thin films will be useful for more reliable development of applications based on organic thin films in areas such as flexible displays, solar cells, organic sensors, biomaterials, and biochips.
