  • This paper presents a multidimensional type inheritance indexing technique (MD-TIX) for XML databases. We use a multidimensional file organization as the index structure. In conventional XML database indexing techniques using one-dimensional index structures, they do not efficiently handle complex queries involving both nested elements and type inheritance hierarchies. We extend a two-dimensional type hierarchy indexing technique(2D-THI) for indexing the nested elements of XML databases. 2D-THI is an indexing scheme that deals with the problem of clustering elements in a two-dimensional domain space consisting of the key value domain and the type identifier domain for indexing a simple element in a type hierarchy. In our extended scheme, we handle the clustering of the index entries in a multidimensional domain space consisting of a key value domain and multiple type identifier domains that include one type identifier domain per type hierarchy on a path expression. This scheme efficiently supports queries that involve search conditions on the nested element represented by an extended path expression. An extended path expression is a path expression in which every type hierarchy on a path can be substituted by an individual type or a subtype hierarchy.

  • The view mechanism provides users with appropriate portions of database through data filtering and integration. In the Web era where information proliferates, the view concept is also useful for XML, a future standard for data exchange on the Web. This paper proposes a method of implementing XML views called XML view indexing, whereby XML view xv is represented as an XML view index(XVI) which is a structure containing the identifiers of xv's underlying XML elements as well as the information on xv. Since XVI for xv stores just the identifiers of the XML elements but not the elements themselves, when a user requests to retrieve xv, its XVI should be materialized against xv's underlying XML documents. Also an efficient algorithm to incrementally maintain consistency of XVI given a update of xv's underlying XML documents is required. This paper proposes and implements data structures and algorithms for XML view indexing. The performance experiments on XML view indexing reveal that it outperforms view recomputation for repeated accesses to the view, and requires as much as about 30 times less storage space compared to XML view materialization though the latter takes less time for repeated accesses to the view due to no need of materialization.

  • In this paper, we propose indexing method to manage large amount of XML documents efficiently, using the range of node and Pre-Oder List. The most of XML indexing methods are based on path or numbering method. However, the method of path-based indexing method shows disadvantages of performance degradation for join operations of ancestor-descendent relationships, and searching for middle and lower nodes. The method of numbers-scheme based indexing has to number all nodes of XML documents, since search overhead increased and the disk space for indexes was wasted. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel indexing method using node ranges and Preorder-Lists to overcome these problems. The proposed method more efficiently stores similar structured XML documents. In addition, our method supports flexible insertion and deletion of XML documents.

  • Caching query results and reusing them in processing of subsequent queries is an important query optimization technique. Materialized view and view indexing are the representative examples of such a technique. The two schemes had received much attention for relational databases, and have been investigated for XML data since XML emerged as the standard for data exchange on the Web. In XML view indexing, XML view xv which is the result of an XML query is represented as an XML view index(XVI), a structure containing the identifiers of xv's underlying XML elements as well as the information on xv. Since XVI for xv stores just the identifiers of the XML elements not the elements themselves, when xv is requested, its XVI should be materialized against xv's underlying XML documents. In this paper, we address the problem of integrating an XML view index management system with an RDBMS based XML storage system. The proposed system was implemented in Java on Windows 2000 Server with each of two different commercial RDBMSs, and used in evaluating performance improvement through XML view indexing as well as its overheads. The experimental results revealed that XML view indexing was very effective with an RDBMS based XML storage system while its overhead was negligible.

  • In this mobile computing environment, data broadcasting is widely used to resolve the problem of limited power and bandwidth of mobile equipments. Most previous broadcast indexing methods concentrate on flat data. However. with the growing popularity of XML, an increasing amount of information is being stored and exchanged in the XML format. We propose a novel indexing method. called TOP tree(Tree Ordering based Path summary tree), for indexing XML document on mobile broadcast environments. TOP tree is a path summary tree which provides a concise structure summary at group level using global IDs and element information at local level using local IDs. Based on the TOP tree representation, we suggest a broadcast stream generation and query Processing method that efficiently handles not only simple Path queries but also multiple path queries. We have compared our indexing method with other indexing methods. Evaluation results show that our approaches can effectively improve the access time and tune-in time in a wireless broadcasting environment.

  • XML documents consist of elements that are basic units of information. When the structure of XML documents is changed dynamically, we need to update structure information efficiently without changing the information of the index structure for fast retrieval. In this paper, we propose a dynamic indexing model scheme that updates the index structure in real time as the structure of XML documents is changed by insertion and deletion of elements. Our dynamic indexing model consists of a structure information representation method and a dynamic index structure. The structure information representation method supports various types of structure retrievals. Our dynamic index structure processes various structural queries efficiently. We show through various experiments that our method outperforms existing ones in processing various types of queries such as content based queries, structural queries and hybrid queries.

  • Since the XML standard was introduced by the W3C in 1998, documents that have been written in XML have been gradually increasing. Accordingly, several systems have been developed in order to efficiently manage and retrieve massive XML documents. BitCube-a bitmap indexing system-is a representative system for this field of research. Based on the bitmap indexing technique, the path bitmap indexing system(LH06), which performs the clustering of similar paths, improved the problem that the existing BitCube system could not solve, namely, determining similar paths. The path bitmap indexing system has the advantage of a higher retrieval speed in not only exactly matched path searching but also similar path searching. However, the similarity calculation algorithm of this system has a few particular problems. Consequently, it sometimes cannot calculate the similarity even though some of two paths have extremely similar relationships; further, it results in an increment in the number of meaningless clusters. In this paper, we have proposed a novel method that clustering, the similarity between the paths in order to solve these problems. The proposed system yields a stable result for clustering, and it obtains a high score in clustering precision during a performance evaluation against LH06.

  • This paper presents a two-dimensional type inheritance hierarchy index(2D-THI) for XML databases. XML Schema is one of schema models for the XML documents supporting. The type inheritance. The conventional indexing techniques for XML databases can not support XML queries on type inheritance hierarchies. We construct a two-dimensional index structure using multidimensional file organizations for supporting type inheritance hierarchy in XML queries. This indexing technique deals with the problem of clustering index entries in the two-dimensional domain space that consists of a key element domain and a type identifier domain based on the user query pattern. This index enhances query performance by adjusting the degree of clustering between the two domains. For performance evaluation, we have compared our proposed 2D-THI with the conventional class hierarchy indexing techniques in object-oriented databases such as CH-index and CG-tree through the cost model. As the result of the performance evaluations, we have verified that our proposed two-dimensional type inheritance indexing technique can efficiently support the query Processing in XML databases according to the query types.

  • Computing paradigm shift to internet-based one has accelerated the use of XML in diverse applications. This phenomena has made the explosive increases of XML data and it triggered many active researches in maintaining very huge amount of XML data in turn. In this paper we present a persistent graph-based XML indexing lot data-centric XML data. In our approach we use 3 graphs to represent XML indexes and XML data itself. They are schema graph, data graph index. And then we have mapped those graphs to B+-trees the persistency. With our approach we can achieve linear query execution time with the increase of XML sizes.

  • In this paper, we propose an indexing model for efficient structure retrieval of XML documents. The proposed indexing model consists of structured information that supports a wide range of queries such as content-based queries and structure-attribute queries at all levels of the document hierarchy and index organizations that are constructed based on the information. To support structured retrieval, a new representation method for structured information is presented. Using this structured information, we design content index, structure index, and attribute index for efficient retrieval. also, we explain processing procedures for mixed queries and evaluate the performance of proposed indexing model. It is shown that the proposed indexing model achieves better retrieval performance than the existing method.
