  • Magnetic Fe-Co(C) nanocapsules and Fe-Co nanoparticles were prepared by arc-discharge in two kinds of atmospheres, i.e. methane and a mixture of ($H_2$+Ar), respectively. Characterization and magnetic properties of this two kinds of ultrafine particles were investigated systematically by means of X-ray diffraction, Mssbauer spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy disperse spectroscopy analysis, chemical analysis, oxygen determination and magnetization measurement. Effects of carbon element, decomposed from a methane atmosphere in carbon arc process, on phase structures, magnetic states and surface characterization were studied in comparison to that of Ar element. Two ultrafine particles showed a little difference in the weight ratio of (Fe/co) and the size for Fe-Co nanoparticles was about two times bigger than Fe-Co(C) nanocapsules. The saturation magnetization of Fe-Co (C) nanocapsules was about 8% higher than that of Fe-Co nanoparticles while their phase constitutions were similar. Although no carbon could be detected by XRD measurement because of extremely thin shells on the surfaces of the cores, it is still believed that they are carbon and oxygen layers.

  • Effects of V substitution of Fe on the magnetic properties of $Fe_3O_4$ have been investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) measurements on sol-gel-grown films. XRD data indicates that the $V_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ films maintain cubic structure up to x=1.0 with little change of the lattice constant. Analyses on V 2p and Fe 2p levels of the XPS data indicate that V exist as $V^{3+}$ mostly in the $V_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ films with the density of $V^{2+}$ ions increasing with increasing V content. Analyses on the CEMS data indicate that $V^{3+}$ ions substitute tetrahedral $Fe^{3+}$ sites mostly, while $V^{2+}$ ions octahedral $Fe^{2+}$ sites. Results of room-temperature VSM measurements on the films reveal that the saturation magnetization for the x=0.14 sample is larger than that of $Fe_3O_4$, while it becomes smaller than that of $Fe_3O_4$ for $x{\geq}0.5$. The coercivity of the $V_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ films is found to increase with x, attributed to the increase of anisotropy by the substitution of $V^{2+}(d^3)$ ions into the octahedral sites.

  • [ $LaFeO_3$ ] powders were synthesized using a method involving solution combustion, and the surface properties of these powders were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As the amount of fuel increased during the synthesis, the $LaFeO_3$ powders became amorphous with a large plate-like shape. It was found that the O 1s spectra were composed of two types of photoelectrons by deconvolutioning the spectra. Photoelectrons with higher binding energy come from adsorbed oxygen ($O^-$) whereas those with lower energy come from lattice oxygen ($O^{2-}$). The ratio of adsorbed and lattice oxygen increased as the ratio of the fuel and nitrate (${\Phi}$) increased. The binding energy of both types of oxygen increased as ${\Phi}$ increased due to the formation of carbonates.

  • In natural environments, manganese (Mn) exists in the valence of +2, +3, and +4 and plays a pivotal role as a strong oxidant or reductant in the geochemical cycles of elements. Especially, Mn forms varying (oxyhydr)oxides. The oxidation state of structural Mn is characteristic to each oxide and is one of the most important factors controlling its geochemical behaviors such as solubility, sorption capacity, and redox potential. Therefore, it is important to elucidate processes governing Mn oxidation state in predicting the fate and transport of many redox sensitive elements in the environment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a very useful method to determine the oxidation state of various elements in solid phases. In this study, the oxidation states of structural Mn in MnO, $Mn_2O_3$, $MnO_2$ were assessed based on the binding energy spectra of $Mn2p_{3/2}$ and Mn3s using XPS and were compared with those reported elsewhere. $Mn2p_{3/2}$ binding energies were determined as 640.9, 641.5, 641.8 eV for MnO, $Mn_2O_3$, $MnO_2$, respectively, which indicates that the binding energy increased with increasing Mn oxidation state. It was also noted that Ar etching may cause changes in electronic structure configuration on surface of the original sample.

  • Copper and zinc are well known elements with antibacterial effect. So in this research, Cu and Zn (CZ) nanofibers (NFs) were fabricated by electrospinning method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) for adjusting viscosity. The CZ/PVP precursor solutions were prepared with copper sulfate pentahydrate, and zinc acetate dihydrate. Distilled water was used for solvent and PVP was used to regulate the viscosity of precursor solution. The CZ/PVP NF composites were obtained by electrospinning method using the precursor solution. The average diameter of obtained CZ/PVP NFs was determined by optical microscopy using Motic image plus 2.0 program and was found to be 490 nm. The chemical environment of the obtained CZ/PVP NF composites was investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After heating the obtained CZ/PVP NF composites at 353 K, the solvent was removed. The characteristic C 1s, Cu 2p, and Zn 2p core level XPS peaks were observed. After calcination the CZ/PVP NF composites at 873 K in Ar environment for 5 hrs, PVP was decomposed at this temperature and CZ NF was obtained. This was confirmed by decreasing the intensity of C 1s.

  • The surface reactions of silica film($SiO_2-P_2O_5-B_2O_3-GeO_2$) with fluorocarbon plasma has been studied by using angle -resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). It has been confirmed that residual carbon consists of C-C and C-CFx bonds and fluorine mainly binds silicon in the case of etched silica by using $CF_4$ gas plasma. The surface reaction of silica with various fluorocarbon gases, such as $CF_4,C_2F_6 and CHF_3$ were investigated. XPS results showed that though the etching gases were changed, the elements and binding states of the residual layers on the etched silica by using various fluorocarbon gas plasma were nearly the same . This seems to be due to the high volatility of byproducts, that is, $SiF_4 and CO_2$ etc..

  • This paper reports on thermally adjusted graphene oxide (GO) as the hole transport layer (HTL) for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). GO is generally not suitable for HTL of OLEDs because of intrinsic specific resistance. In this paper, the specific resistance of GO is adjusted by the thermal annealing process. The optimum specific resistance of HTL is found to be $10^2{\Omega}{\cdot}m$, and is defined by the maximum current efficiency of OLEDs, 2 cd/A. In addition, the reasons for specific resistance change are identified by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). First, the XPS results show that several functional groups of GO were detached by thermal energy, and the amount of epoxide changed substantially following the temperature. Second, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the C-C bond decreased during the process. That means the crystallinity of the graphene improved, which is the scientific basis for the change in specific resistance.

  • We herein report a new analytical application of XPS to the identification of organic molecules in room temperature ionic liquid for the first time. An organic compound, propargylamine (1), produced in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][$PF_6$]), which is one of the room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), via $A^3$ coupling reaction, is characterized by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) rather than using conventional organic compound analysis techniques. There are four non-equivalent carbons in RTILs and 1 each. The ratios of normalized integrated areas of the deconvoluted binding energy of core electron of carbon (C1s) peaks are well matched to the number of carbons in those compounds. The binding energies of C1s of the featured carbons in 1, C4 (sp carbons in acetylene group) and C5 ($sp^2$ carbons in benzene ring), are assigned 286.2 and 285.4 eV, respectively. These results will be able to provide an important tool and a new strategy for the analysis of organic molecules

  • TiN has been investigated as a good candidate for a diffusion barrier of Cu. Therefore, in this study, the grain boundary diffusion of Cu in TiN film was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). In general, TiN has a columnar grain structure. In the relatively lower temperature, less than 1/3 of the melting point, it was observed that Cu diffused into TiN mainly along the grain boundaries of TiN. The grain size of TiN was measured by atomic force microscope (AFM). In order to estimate the grain boundary diffusion constants, we used the modified surface accumulation method. The activation energy, $Q_b$ was 0.23 eV, and the diffusivity, $D_{bo}$ was $5.5\times10^{-12{\textrm{cm}^2$/sec.

  • The mixed ferrite $V_xFe_{3-x}O_4$(x=0.0, 0.15, 0.5, 1.0) thin films were prepared by sol-gel method. Their crystallographic and magnetic hyperfine properties have been studied using X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and conversion electron $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy(CEMS). The crystal structure is found to be cubic spinel throughout the series($x{\leq}1.0$), and the lattice parameter $a_0$ increases linearly with increasing V content. XRD, XSP and CEMS indicate that $V^{3+}$ substitution for $Fe^{3+}$ in B-site is superior to $V^{2+}$ substitution for $Fe^{2+}$ in B-site. It is noticeable that both quadrupole shift and hyperfine field decreases with increasing V composition, suggesting the change of local symmetry and accompanying line-broadening. The line-broadening on CEMS spectra can be explained by the distribution of magnetic hyperfine fields.
