  • Understanding of wear mode and prediction of wear rate of parts in sliding contact are very important in field of meterial design relating with wear resistant. This paper has been undertaken to analyze the possibility of elucidation of wear mode and prediction of wear rate for annealed steel in sliding contact using the X-ray diffraction. The sliding wear test with various velocities using pin-on-disc machine and the X-ray diffraction test on the worn surface have been carried out. The results have been shown that the magnitude of residual stress and half-value breadth on the worn surface have a good correlation with wear mode. The difference between before and after test of half-value breadth on worn surface has been shown to be exponential relation with wear rate in the same wear mode.

  • This study verified the relationship between fracture mechanics parameters(ΔK, ΔK$\sub$eff/, K$\sub$max/) and X-ray parameters (${\alpha}$$\sub$r/, B) for SG365 steel at elevated temperature up to 300$^{\circ}C$. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to crack length direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase low ΔK region, reach to a maximum value at a certain value of K$\sub$max/ or ΔK and then decrease. Residual stress were independent on stress ratio by arrangement of ΔK and half value breadth were independent by the arrangement of K$\sub$max/. The equation of ${\alpha}$$\sub$r/ - ΔK was established by the experimental data. Therefore, tincture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

  • This study investigates a relationship between fracture mechanics parameters (Stress Intensity Factor Range: ΔK, Maximum Stress Intensity Factor; Kmax) and X-ray parameters (residual stress:$\sigma$r half-value breadth: B) for SG365 steel at elevated temperature up to 30$0^{\circ}C$. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to the direction of crack length was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase at low ΔK region, to reach a maximum value at a certain value of Kmax or ΔK and then to decrease. Residual stress was independent of stress ratio by arrangement of ΔK and half value breadth were independent of the arrangement of Kmax. The equation of $\sigma$r-ΔK was established by the experimental data. therefore, fracture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

  • ZnS/ZnSe superlattices were prepared on GaAs (100) substrates by hot wall epitaxy, an the structures were analyzed using x-ray diffraction. It is shown that the x-ray diffraction of the strained superlattice gives very useful information about the thickness of each layer, strain, interdiffusion, and the fluctuation of the superlattice period. Interdiffusion length of the S and Se is estimated to be less than $2\;{\AA}$.

  • Residual stresses in epitaxial films were measured by X-ray diffraction method. Lattice strains of the (hkl) planes measured along particular Ψ-angles were converted to the in-plane stress according to the equation of stress-strain tensor conversion. Residual tensile stresses were observed in epitaxial PbTiO$_3$ films deposited on (100) SrTiO$_3$ substrate. Tensile stresses approximately 0.9 GPa were measured in Pb-rich films, while it increased to approximately 2.0 GPa with the decreasing of Pb content in the case of Pb-poor films, which ascribed to the formation of lead and oxygen vacancies (expressed as x in Pb$_1-x$TiO$_3-x$).

  • The crystal structure of $Li(ND_4)SO_4$ was analyzed by X-ray and neutron diffraction methods. The crystal is a deuterated $Li(NH_4)SO_4$ and one of the ferroelectric materials with hydrogen atoms. The crystal is orthorhombic at room temperature, $P2_1nb$, with lattice parameters of $a=5.2773(5)\;{\AA},\;b=9.1244(23)\;{\AA},\;c=8.7719(11)\;{\AA}$ and Z=4. Neutron intensity data were collected on the Four-Circle diffractometer (FCD) at HANARO in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and X-ray date were given by Prof. Y. Noda of Tohoku University Japan. The structure was refined by full-matrix least-square to final R value of 0.070 for 1450 observed reflections by X-ray diffraction and to final R=0.049 for 745 observed reflections by neutron diffraction. With X-ray data we obtained only one hydrogen atomic position. However, not only all atomic positions of four hydrogen atoms at $NH_4$ but also the occupation factors of D and H were refined with neutron data. From this results we obtained the average chemical structure of this sample, $LiND_{3.05}H_{0.95}SO_4$.

  • To obtain detailed information on the metastable and the equilibrium phases in rapidly solidified Al-(Fe,Ce) alloys, analysis of X-ray diffraction pattern has been carried out. It has been found that the metastable phase formed in Al-Fe alloys including up to 6wt%Fe is $Al_6Fe$ and the equilibrium phase is $Al_3Fe$. Any X-ray diffraction peak corresponding to the equilibrium phase $Al_{13}Fe_4$ has not been observed during aging. In Al-4wt%Fe alloy, which is ribbon shape with thickness less than $70\;{\mu}m$, aged at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1h after rapid solidification, unidentified phase has been found. In Al-4wt%Ce alloy, only X-ray diffraction peak corresponding to the equilibrium phase, $Al_4Ce$ has been observed. It has been found that the metastable phase Formed in Al-Fe-Ce alloys including up to 6wt% Fe and 4wt% Ce is $Al_6Fe$ and the equilibrium phases are $Al_3Fe$ and $Al_{10}CeFe_2$.

  • We report various synchrotron radiation laboratory based techniques used to characterize cement based materials in nanometer scale. High resolution X-ray transmission imaging combined with a rotational axis allows for rendering of samples in three dimensions revealing volumetric details. Scanning transmission X-ray microscope combines high spatial resolution imaging with high spectral resolution of the incident beam to reveal X-ray absorption near edge structure variations in the material nanostructure. Microdiffraction scans the surface of a sample to map its high order reflection or crystallographic variations with a micron-sized incident beam. High pressure X-ray diffraction measures compressibility of pure phase materials. Unique results of studies using the above tools are discussed-a study of pores, connectivity, and morphology of a 2,000 year old concrete using nanotomography; detection of localized and varying silicate chain depolymerization in Al-substituted tobermorite, and quantification of monosulfate distribution in tricalcium aluminate hydration using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy; detection and mapping of hydration products in high volume fly ash paste using microdiffraction; and determination of mechanical properties of various AFm phases using high pressure X-ray diffraction.
