The Epistolary Novel and Samuel Richardson's Heroines: Female Writers and Readers of Letters

  • The epistolary novel, as developed and refined by Samuel Richardson (1689-1761), is concerned with distinctly private experience and the morality of individuals-Richardson's heroine writers. In contrast to nineteenth-century novels, which explore their subjects through the overview of a narrator with a singular moral outlook, the epistolary narrative allows Richardson to examine the various different ways in which individuals/heroines interpret, mold, and respond to their experiences in writing. In this paper, I argue that the authorial voice of Richardson does not control the narrative but rather is present in the prefaces, character sketches, notes and occasional interjections between letters. Although there is little doubt as to whether Richardson intended to make a particular moral point or attempted to control the effect of his novels on his readers, the heroines and their letters dominate the novels so that they put the authorial suggestions in a different light, reducing the author's to one voice among several. Thus, Pamela's letters are exemplary for the vigor and intelligence with which they appear to be written, rather than for the imposed morality of their ghost writer-Richardson. Although Clarissa is of a different social class from Pamela, both heroines are united in their oppression as victims of a patriarchal society. In Clarissa's letters, the heroine's situation and experience are seen through her own writing in dialogue with that of her confidante Anna Howe, and in contrast to the writing of her oppressors. Clarissa, then, becomes a struggle between different discourses in which their genesis and effect, and the societies and individuals from which they come are implicitly suggested in Richardson's text. While Richardson may or may not be guilty of taking the writing of women and using it for his own ends, his epistolary novels represent a deliberate and bold attempt to shape the novel in a way conducive to his heroines and to women writers.

  • 인쇄텍스트의 여러 제약들이 혁신적인 컴퓨터 기술의 발달로 인해 해결 방법이 제시되고 있다. 하이퍼텍스트는 온라인에서 발견되어 지는 전자 텍스트로서 비선형적 방법으로 정의되어 질수 있다. 전통적인 인쇄텍스트와는 대조적으로 전자방식의 쓰기는 약간의 변형이 필요한 새로운 기술에 의존하고 있다. 그러나 불행하게도 아직도 많은 연구들이 지식의 축적을 위한 목적으로 하이퍼텍스트 형태로 문서들을 해독할 때 독자가 가지고 있는 경험들을 필요로 하고 있다. 이 분야에 대해 지금까지 여러 연구들이 있어왔지만 독해를 위한 항법과 그 대책에 관한 방법을 제시하고 있지는 않는 것 같다. 본 논문은 독해력을 위한 전통 인쇄텍스트와 하이퍼텍스트간의 차이를 실험을 통해 밝히고자 한다. 실험 대상자들이 하이퍼텍스트와 인쇄텍스트를 해독할 때 가지는 경험을 근거하여 볼 때 텍스트의 형태는 독자의 독해력 기억에 매우 중요한 관계를 가지고 있다는 것을 밝히고자 한다.

  • We presents a source module implementation system using building blocks as one of the software reusing approach. Based on module text retrieval system, system is composed of library management program and new module making program for module management. We build a software module by virtue of the reuser's customization and by applying a practical module to this model and then proved that program development through reusing approach is better than that of writing out a source code directly.

  • Graded reading is to match reading competency of readers with difficulty levels of text, based on the study of readability. This article discusses how to apply new media to develop Chinese graded reading materials which are more interesting, scientific and practical than traditional paper materials. The graded materials on the new media platform can be used for Chinese second language learners to self-study, and also for instructors to support reading and writing instruction in class or after class.

WWW Based Instruction Systems for English Learning: GAIA

  • I studied a distance education model for English learning on the Internet. Basic WWW files, that contain courseware, are constructed with HTML, and functions, which are required in learning, are implemented with Java. Students and educators can access the preferred unit composed of the appropriate text, voice and image data by using a WWW browser at any time. The education system supports the automatic generation facility of English problems to practice reading and writing by making good use of the courseware data or various English text resources located on the Internet. Our system has functions to manage and control the flow of distance learning and to offer interaction between students and the system in a distributed environment. Educators can manage students' learning and can immediately be aware of who is attending and who is quitting the lesson in virtual space. Also, students and educators in different places can communicate and discuss a topic through the server. I implemented these functions, which are required in a client/server environment of distance education, with the use of Java. The URL for this system is "http://park.taegu-e.ac.kr" in the name of GAIA.

하이퍼텍스트의 개념과 응용에 관한 고찰 (An Overview of Hypertext and Its Applications)

  • 하이퍼텍스트시스템은 비직선적이며 비연속적인 형태로 문헌을 조직하고 이용할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 정보시스템이다. 하이퍼텍스트는 정보뭉치를 소장하는 노드와 상호 관련된 노드들을 연결하는 링크로 구성되며 노드에는 텍스트, 그래프, 그림, 비디오화면, 소리 등의 정보가 소장될 수 있다. 이용자는 링크를 선택함으로써 원하는 정보에 자유롭게 접근할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 하이퍼텍스트의 개념, 구성요소, 특성 둥을 구체적으로 살펴보고 PC용 상용시스템인 Guide에 관해 간단한 응용 예를 들어 기술하였다.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to analyze the text of the 『HaeHokByeonUi(解惑辨疑)』 in detail and to collect information on its author, Lee, ByungHa. Methods : Family and life of Lee, ByungHa were reconstructed through genealogy and historical data published by the government. The contents and frequency of title items were analyzed. Results :1. The period of writing is estimated to be between 1827-1831. 2. At that time, there were one JeonUigam(典醫監)-bujigjang(副直長), and four medical officers who belonged to the Chijongcheong(治腫廳). 3. There was a total of 2434 title items, of which 472 items were overlaps. 4. The proportion of general vocabulary is higher than that of other vocabulary. 5. The overlapping title items are presumed to be important basic concepts within the medical text of that time. Conclusions : 『HaeHokByeonUi(解惑辨疑)』 was likely an introductory text to those preparing for the National Medical Examination of the 19th century. It provides useful basic medical vocabulary to learners of Korean Medicine even today.

Linguistic and Stylistic Markers of Influence in the Essayistic Text: A Linguophilosophic Aspect

  • The article explores linguo-stylistic influence markers in essayistic texts. The novelty of this investigation is provided by its perspective. Essayism is looked at as a style of thinking and writing and studied as a holistic philosophical and cultural phenomenon, as a revalent form of comprehension of reality that features non-lasting author's judgements and enhancement of the author's voice in the text. Based on the texts by V. Rosanov, G.K. Chesterton, and D. Dontsov, the remarkable English, Russian, and Ukrainian essay-writers of the first party of the 20th century, the article tracks the typical ontological-and-existentialist correlation at the content, stylistic, and semantic levels. It is observed in terms of the ideas presented in the texts of these publicists and the lexicostylistic markers of the influence on the reader that enable these ideas to implement. The explored poetic syntax, key lexemes, dialogueness, intonational melodics, specific language, free associations, aphoristic nature, verbalization of emotions and feeling in the psycholinguistic form of their expression, stress, heroic elevation, metaphors and evaluative linguistic units in the ontological-and-existentialist aspects contribute to extremely delicate and demanding nature of the essayistic style. They create a "lacework" of unpredictable properties, intellectual illumination, unexpected similarity, metaphorical freshness, sudden discoveries, unmotivated unities.

한글본 석실비록(石室祕錄) 연구 (A Study on the Korean Translation of the Shishimilu )

  • Objectives :The Shishimilu is a clinical treatise, published in 1687 by Qing period doctor, Chensiduo. The purpose of this study is to report the newly discovered Korean translation to the academic world and discuss its significance. Methods : The newly discovered Korean translated version was examined in detail focusing on bibliography and content items. In addition, the time of introduction of the Shishimilu to Joseon was studied philologically. Results : 1. The time of completion was during the period of the Korean Empire. 2. The original text was faithfully translated. 3. The book was rearranged from the original document to make it easier to apply in clinical practice. 4. Experiences of Joseon medicine were reflected, mainly prescriptions. 5. According to documentary evidence, the Shishimilu was first introduced to Korea only in the late 19th century, and was widely distributed during the Japanese colonial period. Conclusions : he Korean translated version of the Shishimilu was the earliest among known Korean translations of Chinese medical texts, and while faithfully translating the original text, the compilation was rearranged to make it easier to apply clinically. In addition, the experience of Joseon medicine was reflected mostly in prescriptions. It could be determined that if contents of the Shishimilu appear in Korean literature whose writing period is unknown, it can be historically verified to have been written after the late 19th century.

A Study on the Syntagma & Paradigm by Repetition, Variation and Contrast in Ads

  • This study is the academic work to explore the potential meanings of print advertisements. Linguistic features such as repetition, variation, contrast and phonological structure in the verbal texts of ads can give rise to shades-of-meaning or slight variations in advertising. The language of advertising is not only language in words. It is also a language in images, colors, and pictures. Pictures and words combine to form the advertisement's visual text.. While the words are very important in delivering the sales message, the visual text cannot be ignored in advertisements. Forming part of the visual text is the paralanguage of the ad. Paralanguage is the meaningful behaviour accompanying language, such as voice quality, gestures, facial expressions and touch in speech, and choice of typeface and letter sizes in writing. Foregrounding is the throwing into relief of the linguistic sign against the background of the norms of ordinary language. This paper focuses its discussion on the advertisements within the framework of the paradigmatic and the syntagmatic relationship. The sources of ads have been confined to Malboro. The ads were reselected based on purposive sampling methods.
