This study was performed to compare the fatigue limit of stainless steel wires and Fiber-reinforced composites (FRC) under conditions of permitting physiologic tooth movement. and to evaluate the clinical value of FRCs which was used to reinforce the anchorage unit. The stainless steel wire groups were divided into round and rectangular wire groups. The FRC groups were divided into uni-directional and woven groups, with resin coating and without resin coating in the Proximal area After the number of cycles to failure of each of the 6 groups were measured within the $5{\times}10^5\;cycle$ fatigue limit simulating the orthodontic treatment period. the fatigue limit of each group was compared with each other The findings of this study were as follows. In stainless steel wires, the fatigue limit of rectangular wires were higher than that of round wires. But there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). In FRCs with resin coating and without resin coating in the interproximal area, the fatigue limit of uni-directional type was higher than that of the woven type (p<0.05). In uni-directional and woven type FRCs, the fatigue limit of FRC with resin coating in the interproximal area was higher thar that of FRC without resin coating (P<0.05) As the FRCs and stainless steel wires did not fracture until the $5{\times}10^5\;cycle$ fatigue limit which clinically is useful. it is sufficient to use FRC and stainless steel wire for reinforcing anchorage. When esthetics is important and the attachment of additional devices are necessary. it seems sufficient to use FRC as anchorage reinforcement.

In this study, the characteristic of a 3-D micro-woven material, which is one of the newly developed periodic open-cell structure, is analyzed through various computational simulations. To increase the accuracy of the numerical simulations, the distance between each directional wire is parameterized using six design variables, and its model geometry is precisely discretized using tetrahedron elements. Using the improved computational model, the material properties of the mechanical, thermal, and fluidic behavior are investigated using commercial software and compared with the previous experimental results. By changing the space between the x- and y-directional wires, a parametric test is performed to determine the tendency of the change in the material properties. In addition, the correlation between two different material properties is investigated using the Ashby chart. The result can further be used in determining the optimal pattern and wire spacing in 3-D micro-woven materials.

In this study, we devised a parametric analysis workflow for efficiently analyzing the material properties of 3D woven materials. The parametric model uses wire spacing in the woven materials as a design parameter; we generated 2,500 numerical models with various combinations of these design parameters. Using MATLAB and ANSYS software, we obtained various material properties, such as bulk modulus, thermal conductivity, and fluid permeability of the woven materials, through a parametric batch analysis. We then used this large dataset of material properties to perform a regression analysis to validate the relationship between design variables and material properties, as well as the accuracy of numerical analysis. Furthermore, we constructed an artificial neural network capable of predicting the material properties of 3D woven materials on the basis of the obtained material database. The trained network can accurately estimate the material properties of the woven materials with arbitrary design parameters, without the need for numerical analyses.
Recently, a new periodic cellular metal(PCM) named as Wire wove Bulk Kagome(WBK) was introduced. Based on the shape of tetrahedra composing a WBK, WBKs are classified into two types, namely, concave and convex type. They are easily differentiated by changing the assembling sequence. The effect of geometrical parameters such as the wire diameter, strut length and number of layers on the compressive behavior of concave type WBK has already been investigated. In this work, the similar works were performed with the convex type WBKs. It was shown that the compressive strength of the convex type WBK was quite similar to that of the concave type. The compressive strengths of convex type specimens also depend on the slenderness ratio, but a little different from those of concave type specimens in the detailed behavior. And densification occurs earlier than the concave type WBK.
Recently, ultra-lightweight materials with open, periodic cell structures take much attention owing to its potential for multi-functionality such as load bearing, thermal dissipation, and actuation. This paper presents experimental results on the hydraulic and heat transfer characteristics for the Wire-woven Bulk Kagome(WBK) composed of aluminum 1100 wires. The overall pressure drop and heat transfer of the WBK specimen have been experimentally investigated under forced air convection condition. The pressure loss and heat transfer performance of the aluminum WBK are compared with other heat dissipation media. It was shown that heat transfer depended on relative density and surface area density. Comparison with metal foams and other heat dissipation media such as packed beds, lattice frame materials, louvered fins, and other materials suggests that the aluminum WBK competes favorably with the best available heat dissipation media in heat transfer performance.

A newly developed cellular metal based on kagome lattice is an ideal candidate for multifunctional materials achieving various optimal properties. Intensive efforts have been devoted to develop efficient techniques for mass production due to its wide potential applications. Since a variety of imperfections would be inevitably included in the realistic fabrication processes, it is highly important to examine the correlation between the imperfections and material strengths. Previous performance tests were mostly done by numerical simulations such as finite element method (FEM), but only for perfect structures without any imperfection. In this paper, we developed an efficient numerical framework using nonlinear random network analysis (RNA) to verify how the statistical imperfections (geometrical and material property) contribute to the performance of general truss structures. The numerical results for kagome truss structures are compared with experimental measurements on 3-layerd WBK (wire-woven bulk kagome). The mechanical strength of the kagome structures is shown relatively stable with the Gaussian types of imperfections.

Recently, a new cellular metal, WBK(Wire woven Bulk Kagome) has been introduced. WBK is fabricated by assembling metal wires in six directions into a Kagome-like truss structure and by brazing it at all the crossings. Wires as the raw material are easy to handle and to attain high strength with minimum defect. And the strength and energy absorption are superior to previous cellular metals. Therefore, WBK seems to be promising once the fabrication process for mass production is developed. In this paper, an upper bound solution for the mechanical properties of the bulk WBK under compression is presented. In order to simulate uniform behavior of WBK consisted of perfectly uniform cells, a unit cell of WBK with periodic boundary conditions is analyzed by the finite element method. In comparison with experimental test results, it is found that the solution provides a good approximation of the mechanical properties of bulk WBK cellular metals except for Young's modulus. And also, the brazing joint size does not have any significant effect on the properties with an exception of an idealized thin joint.
Spiral-wound woven wire meshes packed bed rotating cylinder electrode was used for the simultaneous removal of cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) from a binary solution. The effects of weight percent of each metal on the removal and current efficiencies were studied at an operating current of 345A, while the effect of current on the removal efficiency of both metals was investigated at three levels of current (240, 345.and 400 mA). The experiments were carried out at constant rotation speed 800 rpm, pH = 3, and a total concentration of metals (500 ppm). The results showed that the removal efficiency of copper increased from 89% to 99.4% as its weight percent increased from 20% to100%. In a similar fashion, the removal efficiency of cadmium increased from 81% to 97% as its weight percent increased from 20% to100%. The results confirmed that the removal efficiency of any metals declined in the presence of the other. Increasing of current resulted in increasing the removal efficiency of both metals at different weight percents. The results confirmed that current efficiencies for removing of copper and cadmium simultaneously decline with increasing of electrolysis time and weight percent of cadmium or with decreasing the weight percent of copper. Current efficiency was higher at the initial stage of electrolysis for all weight percents of metals. The results showed that the decay of copper concentration was exponential at all weight percents of copper, confirming that the electrodeposition of copper is under mass transfer control in the presence of cadmium. While the decay of cadmium concentration was linear at lower weight percent of cadmium then changed to an exponential behavior at high weight percent of cadmium in the presence of copper.
