This study is carried out to find the most optimal soil-plant combination in the urban agriculture by analyzing the association of soil base material which is being used in the urban agriculture with the growth of plants. 4 types of easily purchased soil (bed soil(A), animal vermicast soil(B), earth worm soil(C) and matured compost(D)) verified in aspects of effect and safety of soil in terms of growth of crop is selected as experimental soil and B, C, D type soils are mixed with granite soil at the ratio of 7 : 3. And granite soil(E) is set as a controlled soil and is compared to verify the effect of the experimental mixed soil. Herbaceous plants are classified into the fruit vegetables (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. and Capsicum annuum L.), leafy vegetables (Brassica campestris L. ssp. Pekinensis and Lactuca sativa L.), medicinal vegetables (Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum and Liriope platyphylla F. T. Wang & T. Tang). The results of comparison of growth of herbaceous plants in different soil types showed that fruit vegetables and leafy vegetables in general had excellent growth in D type soil mixture and A type soil in general and had the poorest growth in E type (controlled) soil. 'Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum' had the excellent growth in D type, B type, C type mixed soil and A type soil and E type (controlled) soil are followed in order. In the case of 'Liriope platyphylla F. T. Wang & T. Tang', the difference in growth by each soil was shown to be insignificant. Therefore, the soil applied in the urban agriculture varies depending on each species of herbaceous plants, but it is considered effective to cultivate herbaceous plant which is economical and productive by using D type mixed soil which can be recycled and inexpensive compared with other experimental soils in the urban agriculture.
Philometroides carassii (ISHII, 1931) is a parasitic nematode of Carassius auratus and gold fish. Recently a large number of parasitized fishes by this nematode have been reported by fish farmers in Korea. The present investigation was aimed to find out the life cycles of the parasites and effects of chemotherapeutic medicines on the emerged larvae from the adult parasites. Results of the study are summarized as follows : 1. Intermediate host of p. cararsii is a freshwater copepod, Cyclops sp. and the invaded lavae in the body cavity of copepod are capable for parasitizing the fish host after 3 hours of invasion. 2. The lavae eaten directly by the fish host are digested or excreted. 3. The larvae invaded in the fish intestine through the intermediate host pass into the body cavity in 1 to 10 days, and become subadult stage. After 18 to 20 months the subadults parasitic in the body cavity of the Carassius auratus, penetrate through muscle fissile into tile caudal fin where they become adults. Whereas those parasitic in the body cavity of the gold fish, 7 to 8 months the sutadults penetrate through muscle tissue into the caudal fin where they become adults. 1. Male subadults found in the body cavity of the Carassius auratus and gold fish, were larger than females, This is the first record of male subadults occurring in the fish host. 5. Among four different :drugs tested, most of all larvae died in 4 ppm of dipterex in 5 days. But no adults were harmed even in 6 ppm dipterex in 11 days.
The morphological and fine structural changes during the oogensis of Clonorchis sinensis were studied on the developing ovums in the ovary and ootype with electron microscope. Adult worms were removed from the hepar of the which and previously infected with metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis. The ovary including the Mehlis' glands and an ootype from adult worm was prefixed for 1-2 hours in 1.25% glutaraldehyde buffered with 0.2M cacodylate at PH 7.2, secondarily fixed for 30 minutes in potassium bicromate and postfixed for an hour in 1% osmic acid buffered with 0.4M cacodylate at PH 7.2. After fixation tissues were dehydrated in an alcohol series, embedded in Epon 812 from propylene oxide and stained with saturated uranyl acetate and $Pn(NO_3)_2$ solution. Material was examined with a Hitachi HS-7S electron microscope. The periphery of the ovary, except for the posterior region, is made up of oogonia. As the oogonia divide they proliferate primary oocytes toward the central part of the ovary. After a period of growth the primary oocyte leaves the ovary and is penetrated by a sperm in the ootype. Sperm penetration immediately activates the primary oocyte to resume its meiotic activity. After the oocytes meiotic activity is completed, the pronuclei fuse to form a single cleavage nucleus which possesses two nucleoli. As the oocytes develop their cytoplamic materials are abundant; small mitochondria are abundant and often their profiles are more unmerous in one part of the cytoplasm than elsewhere; the granular endoplasmic reticulum becomes alveolar-sac form after it leaves the ovary it becomes stratified form. The reticulate Golgi apparatus is apparent in the developed oocyte. A little of cortical granules are distributed inside of the plasma membrane I oogonia and large quantity of cortical granules are arranged just inside of the plasma membrane of the primary oocyte and after fertilization they are disappeared with broken out.
Mccroorchis spinuLosw Ando, 1918 (Digenea: Nanophyetidael is redescribed based on adult flukes recovered from experimental mice, rats and cats which were fed with metacercariae encysted in the muscle of the crayfish, Cambnroines similis. A total of 117 adult flukes were harvested from the small intestine of the experimental animals at S-21 days post-infection. The worm recovery rate was 31-37%, not significantly different among the three kinds of animals. The metacercariae were round, 0.18 mm in average diameter, encysted with two layers of thick walls, and possessing a stylets on the oral sucker and Y- shaped exc retory bladder. The adult flukes were oval, 0.66-0.71 mm long and 0.36-0.41 mm wide, and characterized by the presence of a stylet on the oral sucker, variable location of the ovary near the mid-portion of the body, bilobed seminal vesicle, and anterolateral location of two testes. These morphological features were a little different from the original description, hence, an emended version of M. spinulosw was given. M. spinuLosw is a new intestinal trematode of animals and possibly man in Korea.

A study was carried out to determine the nutritive effect of earthworm on rats. Male albino rats weighing 72.3${\pm}$1.7 g and the female rats weighing 71.4${\pm}$1.4 g were divided into 3 groups for each sez, respectively. The diet groups were control diet(group I), a diet of 2% earthworm flour supplemented to the control diet at every 3 days interval(group II) and a chief of 2% earth-worm flour added to the control diet everyday(group III). Comparing with control group, female rats in group III showed higher tendency of food consumption. Body weight gain of male rats in group III was more than that of control group. Food and protein effeciency ratios were not influenced by 2% earthworm flour added diet in both male and female rats. While the weights of heart and lung of male rats in group H were higher than those of control group, there was little difference in the weights of liver, kidney and spleen between control group and experimental groups. Hematocrit values of female rats in experimental groups were higher than those of control group, however there was little difference in male rats between control group and experimental groups. There was little : difference in the content of hemoglobin in blood, total protein, albumin, A/G ratio, total cholesterol and glucose in serum between control group and experimental groups.
When ammonia ($NH_3$) gas was supplied to a biofilter packed with bio-carrier made of waste polyurthane and worm cast. No odor gases were detected at the outlet of the biofilter when $NH_3$ gas was supplied to the biofilter at the space velocity(SV) of $50\;h^{-1}$ until the inlet $NH_3$ concentration increased to $4\;{\sim}\;454\;ppmv$. The gradual inlet $NH_3$ concentration was set and the removal efficiency of $NH_3$ gas was measured at each condition, while the SV of $NH_3$ increased step by step from 100 to $400\;h^{-1}$. The maximum possible inlet $NH_3$ loading was $11.38\;g-NH_3{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ and $34.42\;g-NH_3{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ while maintaining the removal efficiency of 100% when the SV was $50\;h^{-1}$ and $100 \;h^{-1}$, respectively. The maximum $NH_3$ loading was $71.28 \;g-NH_3{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ with the $NH_3$ removal efficiency of 99.85% at SV $300\;h^{-1}$.
This study was carried out to acquire some basic biological informations on the granulosis virus (GV) of Pieris rapae and Pieris brassicae. Purified fractions of GV capsules in an sucrose density gradient centrifugation yielded on homogenous and sharp peak without a shoulder. Electron microscopy revealed that GV capsules were mostly ovalglove in shape. P. rapae and P. rapae GV isolated from P. rapae comprised granules($396\pm38\times238\pm25nm$ for P. rapae GV. $375\pm40\times255\pm28nm$ for P. brassicae GV) which contained single virus particle. The virus particles were 250- $275{\times}63$ -73nm for P. rapae GV and 243-250 $\times$ 63-75nm for P. brassicae GV containing a nucleocapsid 225 $\times$ 31nm for P. rapae, 225 $\times$ 29nm for P. brassicae within an envelope. The virulent difference between the two viruses was very small in their virulence for P. rapae larvae showing the $LC_{50}$( -log) with 5.5673 for P. rapae GV and 5.8104 for P. brassicae GV. Also the $LT_{50}$ of the 3rd instar P. rapae larvae against $10^{-6}$ inoculum was 8.17 days for P. rapae GV and 7.16 days for P. brassicae GV.
Studies were carried out to describe the structure and distribution of various sensilla on the antenna and mouthparts of the Oriental tobacco bud worm (H. assulta) larvae by light and scanning electron microscopy. The larval antenna has 3 segments. The second segment has 2 hairs and 3 pegs, while the third segment shows 3 regular pegs and a segmented peg (styloconicum type). Each mandible bears 2 aporous hairs on the lateral surface. The labrum bears 12 aporous hairs on its external surface. and 6 aporous hairs, 4 coeloconica-like sensilla and 2 campaniformia-like sensilla on its epipharynx. The stipes has 3 hairs, and the galea has 3 pegs. 2 papillae and 2 domes. The maxillary palpus has only a digitiform sensillum on its 1st segment but 11 sensilla of 4 different types on its 2nd segment. Maxillary sensilla represent almost 70% of total number of larval sensilla on the mouthparts. Labial pal pus has a single segment bearing a large segmented uniporous peg and a small peg. Finally their possible fun¬ctions were suggested.
Field experiments on red-pepper were conducted in Suweon area during 1972-1974 to determine the seasonal fluctuation of Heliothis assulta H. using black light traps and direct counts. Adult moths emerged in late May, and showed three peaks of fluctuation from late June to middle July, from middle August to late August, and in mid-September. Eggs were first discovered in the field in early July, with peak incidence Iron late August to early September. Larval peaks occurred in late July to early August, in late August and mid-September to mid-October Initial hatching in the field occurred in early July. The numbers of the first larval generation were the highest. The parasitization ratio of Trichogramma spp. on eggs averaged 51 percent during mid-July to mid-September. The numbers of Trichogramma spp. emerging from one tobacco bud-worm egg ranged from one to four, but in most cases one or two egg parasitizing wasps emerged.
Cordyceps (vegetable wasp and plant worm), an entomopathogenic fungi, has been used as a herbal medicine in Asian countries since ancient times. Cordyceps nutans is common but there is little research on this species. This study investigated the optimal culture conditions of C. nutans and the inhibitory effect on nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cell treated culture broth. The optimal conditions for the mycelial growth were $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0-8.0. Mycelial growth was highest on mushroom complete medium (MCM), V8 juice agar (V8A), and yeast malt dextrose (YMD) medium. Mycelial growth on mushroom minimal medium (MMM) did not occur, so nutrient source was essential. Dextrose and sucrose as carbon sources, and ammonium citrate as a nitrogen source were satisfactory for mycelial growth. Cytotoxicity of C. nutans culture broth was not found in RAW 264.7 cells. C. nutans culture broth suppressed NO production of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cell in a dose-dependent manner. Thus, our results provided the optimal conditions for cultivation of C. nutans and showed that C. nutans may have excellent physiological activities.
