Study of the Social Wellbeing of Working Mothers of Preschool Children (미취학 자녀를 둔 취업모의 사회적 안녕감에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined the social wellbeing of working mothers of preschool children with the aim of identifying relationships between social wellbeing and influencing factors, focusing on the individual, relationship, and work environment of the mothers. Data on 390 working mothers were used for this study. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 program and descriptive statistics. Pearson's correlation analyses and hierarchical regression analyses were performed. The results show that social wellbeing has significantly positive correlations with education, monthly household income, number of children, age of the first child(8 and over), social capital for childcare, division of childcare, maternal role values, spouse's beliefs about paternal parenting involvement, and family-supportive work environment, as well as significantly negative correlations with weekly working hours, sociological ambivalence, spouse's beliefs about father's breadwinner role and gender-role values, job overload, and gender-role attitudes of coworkers. In addition, hierarchical regression revealed that spouse's beliefs about paternal parenting involvement and a family-supportive work environment were significantly positive predictors of working mothers'social wellbeing, whereas working mothers'sociological ambivalence toward their roles, job overload, and gender-role attitudes of coworkers were significantly negative predictors of working mothers'social wellbeing. These results point to ways of changing education and policy to improve the social wellbeing of working mothers.

A Study on the relationship between work from home and sleep disturbances among workers: using the 5th working environment survey (제5차 근로환경조사를 통해 조사된 재택근무와 수면장애 간의 연관성 연구)

  • This study aimed to analyze the correlation between working from home and sleep disorders among domestic workers using data from the 5th Working Environment Survey in 2017. Out of the total 30,108 wage workers, 818 employees work from home and 4,090 work in an office. A random sample of 1:5 pairs, considering gender and occupational group, was selected from these employees as the study subjects. The analysis included personal characteristics, occupational characteristics, work-from-home arrangements, and sleep disorders. Age, education, employment status, years in the workforce, weekly working hours, work-life balance, self-perceived health, depression, and anxiety were all adjusted as potential confounding variables. Conditional logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between working from home (independent variable) and sleep disorder (dependent variable). This analysis aimed to analyze the correlation between working from home and sleep disorder. The analysis revealed that working from home was associated with sleep onset latency disorder OR=3.23 (95% CI=2.67~3.91), sleep maintenance disorder OR=3.67 (95% CI=3.02~4.45), and non-restorative sleep OR=3.01 (95% CI=2.46~3.67), which showed a statistically significant relationship with all three types of sleep disorders. Factors influencing the correlation between working from home and sleep disorders included work-life balance, social isolation, and anxiety.

Effects of the Charging Mass of Working Fluid on the Thermal Performance of Heat Pipe with Axially Grooved Wick

  • An analytical and experimental study has been conducted to determine the optimal charging mass of working fluid for the maximum heat transport capacity of heat pipe with axially grooved wick. When the heat pipe is operated in a steady state, the liquid-vapor meniscus recession of working fluid to the bottom of groove is occurred in the evaporator region. In this work, the optimal charging mass of working fluid was obtained by considering the meniscus recession from the axial variation of capillary pressure, the radius of curvature and wetting angle of meniscus of liquid-vapor interface. Experimental results were also obtained by varying the charging mass of working fluid within a heat pipe, and presented for the trend of maximum heat transport capacity corresponding to the operating temperature and the elevation of heat pipe. Finally, the analytical results of the optimal charging mass of working fluid were compared with those from the experiment, both of which were in good agreement with each other.

The effects of a 52-hour workweek policy on meat consumption patterns in Korea

  • The 52-hour workweek policy in Korea is a system that limits the maximum working hours per week to 52 hours including holiday work, which has been treated separately from overtime work during a week. Although this policy is designed to improve the quality of life and create jobs, it may also reduce the income of some workers. In general, it can be assumed that reduced working hours increase consumption at home. This study analyzed the effect of the 52-hour work policy on meat consumption patterns with the ordered logit model. Major factors considered in this study include working hours, income, and consumption frequency. It distinguished domestic and workplace consumption. The results show that the policy has had an impact on meat consumption patterns both at home and at work. If there is no change in income and only the working hours decrease, meat consumption in households increases. On the other hand, if both income and working hours decrease, household meat consumption decreases. Moreover, reduced working hours decrease the frequency of office happy hour and meat consumption in the workplace. However, the 52-hour workweek policy applies only to workers working more than 52 hours per week; thus, it is difficult to determine the overall effect of the policy on national meat consumption patterns.

The Effects of Workplace Rest Breaks on Health Problems Related to Long Working Hours and Shift Work among Male Apartment Janitors in Korea

  • Background: Rest breaks at work are reported to reduce fatigue and job stress. Apartment janitors in Korea who perform night shift work and work long hours can be exposed to various health problems (HPs). However, few studies have evaluated relationships between their rest breaks and HPs. This study was conducted to examine the relationships between long working hours, shift work, and insufficient rest breaks and HPs among Korean apartment janitors. Methods: Data on 1,212 selected male apartment janitors were obtained from the 3rd and 4th Korean Working Conditions Surveys. Demographic and occupational characteristics were collected using self-reported questionnaires. Rest breaks at work were classified as "sufficient" or "insufficient." Long working hours were considered as working more than 60 hours per week. Zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression was performed to investigate the effects of shift work and long working hours on HPs and the effects of rest breaks on relationships between HPs and long working hours and shift work. Results: Among those with insufficient rest breaks at work, significant associations were found between long working hours and the risk of HPs [odds ratio (OR) = 1.489; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.038-2.136] and work-related HPs (WRHPs) [OR 1.621; 95% CI = 1.156-2.272], and between shift work and HPs [OR = 1.603; 95% CI = 1.084-2.372]. These relationships became nonsignificant when sufficient rest breaks were provided. Conclusion: It is important to provide breaks at work to reduce HPs because of long working hours and shift work among aged workers such as apartment janitors.

Effect of Sputtering Working Pressure on the Optical and Electrical Properties of InZnO Thin-Film Transistors (스퍼터링 공정 압력이 InZnO 박막트랜지스터의 광학 및 전기적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Amorphous In-Ga-Zn-O (a-IGZO) thin film transistors, because of their relatively low mobility, have limits in attempts to fulfill high-end specifications for display backplanes. In-Zn-O (IZO) is a promising semiconductor material for high mobility device applications with excellent transparency to visible light region and low temperature process capability. In this paper, the effects of working pressure on the physical and electrical properties of IZO films and thin film transistors are investigated. The working pressure is modulated from 2 mTorr to 5 mTorr, whereas the other process conditions are fixed. As the working pressure increases, the extracted optical band gap of IZO films gradually decreases. Absorption coefficient spectra indicate that subgap states increase at high working pressure. Furthermore, IZO film fabricated at low working pressure shows smoother surface morphology. As a result, IZO thin film transistors with optimum conditions exhibit excellent switching characteristics with high mobility (≥ 30㎠/Vs) and large on/off ratio.

Effects of the use of elastic compression stockings among dental hygienists (치과위생사의 탄력압박스타킹 착용 효과)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to characterize edema of the lower extremities that occurs among hygienists during working hours, and to determine the effects of the use of elastic compression stockings. Methods: The study subjects were 40 dental hygienists working at a dental hospital in Daegu. Symptoms of edema of the lower extremities during working hours were characterized by measurement of calf and ankle circumference. Results: Calf and ankle circumference increased during working hours. The use of elastic compression stockings reduced edema of the lower extremities during working hours. Conclusions: Use of elastic compression stockings can reduce levels of lower extremity edema among dental hygienists.

  • As applications of radiation grow wider from use in the early detection of lesions and preventive diagnosis purposes to the treatment of diseases, the possibilities for patients and working professionals to be exposed to radiation are becoming greater than ever. This can not only directly bring about an increase in patient's individual radiation exposure, but also brings about an increase in the annual radiation dose of working professionals. Therefore, research and countermeasures to reduce radiation dosage are required. In this study, space dosimetry has been divided into two separate measuments with an understanding of the increasing number of angiography procedures: front perspective and side perspective. According to the results of the isodose curve, a way to minimize radiation exposure in working professionals has been suggested. This was made possible by workers through awareness of suitable working positions.

The effect of dental hygienist's work environment on job satisfaction and organizational commitment (일부 치과위생사의 근무환경이 직무만족과 조직몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the descriptive correlation of the commission intended to provide effective working practices to enhance job satisfaction and organizational engagement by examining the work environment of the dental hygienist. Methods: After the IRB approval, the subjects were dental hygienists working for dental hospitals and clinics in Busan from May 1st to May 31th of 2017. And the final 153 questionnaires were analyzed to SPSS 23.0 for windows, SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL. USA. The data was analyzed using average standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Results: The average working environment of the subjects was found to be $3.37{\pm}0.53$ points with the average job satisfaction of the subjects of $3.29{\pm}0.50$ points and the average organizational commitment of the subjects of $3.25{\pm}0.59$ points. As the working conditions of the working environment are higher, it revealed that the higher the working environment, the better the job satisfaction. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study showed that the ability to support managers' abilities, leadership, and dental hygienists is the most influential factor in job satisfaction and organizational involvement. Also, hospital administrators are encouraged to provide excellent work and leadership skills to enhance both the quality of work and that of work ethic.

A Study on the Status of Working Environment by Type of Working Processes in Manufacturing Industry of Parts and Accessories for Motor Vehicles and its Engines (경주지역 자동차 부품 제조업의 공정별 작업환경실태에 관한 연구)

  • Objective: This study was carried out to assess the status of working environments, to improve the working environments, and to be helpful to prevent occupational disease. Methods: The authors measured the noise level, concentration of dust, heavy metals, organic solvents, and other chemicals at 95 industries (22 working processes) by type of working process in manufacturing industry of parts and accessories for motor vehicles and its engines from January to December 2003. Samples were measured and analyzed by regulations of Korea Ministry of Labor, manuals of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Results: Results are as follows. 1. Major processes exceeding mean noise levels provided the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV) were shakeout [97.5 dB(A)]. shot-blast [94.2 dB(A)], pressing [92.9 dB(A)], crushing [91.2 dB(A)], and cleaning [90.6 dB(A)]. 2. Mean concentrations of dusts were not exceeded to the TLV. But concentration on some points of processes as like welding (6.50 mg/m3), foundry (5.24 mg/m3) were exceeded. 3. Mean concentrations of heavy metals were not exceeded to the TLV. 4. Mean concentrations of organic solvents and chemicals were not exceeded to the TLV. 5. Improving rate for working environment were significantly higher in industries with health manager than without (p<0.05), and by increasing the year of working environmental measurement (p<0.01). Conclusions: The results suggest that working processes of exceeding to the TLV will be needed rapid improvement of the working environment, and also the others will be needed positive management of the working environment. Health managers must be recommended to employ in the workplace, and further studies for relationship between working environment and health effects for the workers must be carried out.
