Evaluation of Environmental Conditions on Board in terms of Air Pollution and Electromagnetic Wave in Coastal Small-sized Ships (연안 소형선박내의 공기오염 및 전자파에 기초한 선상근무 환경의 평가)

  • The shipboard working environment of coastal patrol ship is very inferior to the ground working environment and it causes the avoidance of shipboard working and the aging of crew. Especially the air pollution and electromagnetic wave in ships causes an occupational disease. Hence of reduce the shipboard working fatigue is necessary by the security of the comfortable shipboard working environment. In this paper, firstly we evaluate the shipboard working environment by using the measurement results of the shipboard air pollution and electromagnetic wave in the sea. And we propose the measures to reduce the shipboard working fatigue which is based on the evaluation results of the shipboard working environment.

Long Working Hours in Korea: Based on the 2014 Korean Working Conditions Survey

  • Background: Long working hours adversely affect worker safety and health. In 2004, Korea passed legislation that limited the work week to 40 hours, in an effort to improve quality-of-life and increase business competitiveness. This regulation was implemented in stages, first for large businesses and then for small businesses, from 2004 to 2011. We previously reported that average weekly working hours decreased from 2006 to 2010, based on the Korean Working Conditions Survey. Methods: In the present study, we examine whether average weekly working hours continued to decrease in 2014 based on the 2014 Korean Working Conditions Survey. Results: The results show that average weekly working hours among all groups of workers decreased in 2014 relative to previous years; however, self-employed individuals and employers (who are not covered by the new legislation) in the specific service sectors worked > 60 h/wk in 2014. Conclusion: The Korean government should prohibit employees from working excessive hours and should also attempt to achieve social and public consensus regarding work time reduction to improve the safety, health, and quality-of-life of all citizens, including those who are employers and self-employed.

The Impacts of Three Sub-Policies and Sub-Strategies of Working Capital Management on Firm's Performance in Thailand

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of working capital policy and strategy on a firm's performance including profitability and market value. By applying One-Sample T-Test, working capital investment and financing policies were classified into the three sub-policies and strategies: aggressive, moderate, and conservative, unlike previous studies using two sub- policies and strategies. The results showed that the SET-listed companies in all seven industry sectors primarily adopted an aggressive working capital investment policy and a conservative working capital financing policy, so-called as moderate working capital management strategy (MWS), at 49.40%. While the firms adopted and conservative working capital management strategy (CWS), 45.70%, followed by the aggressive working capital management strategy (AWS), at 4.90%. When examining the impacts among three-sub policies and strategies on a firm's performance, it was found that the conservative working capital financing policy led to the highest profitability and market value in all industry sectors. The findings also revealed that the aggressive strategy has no impact on a firm's performance in terms of profitability and market value.

  • In this study, it was researched a kind of the press machines which had been retained in the domestic press working companies. And then it was analyzed the present conditions with the working types, companies size, the aging types and the continuous working periods. Specially, the purpose of this paper is decreased the industrial accidents of the domestic press working companies by the proposing the safe prevention which are obtained by the analysing the accidential reasons.

  • The number of possible working days is one of the major factors for estimating the coverage area of a combine harvester. The percentages of possible working days at 24 locations were presented by analyzing the amount of rainfall during the working periods of rice harvesting from the end of September to the end of October for past 20 years. The percentages of possible working days ranged from 75% to 85% in most cases.

A Study on Student Perception of Participation in Distance Learning : Differences Between Working and Non-Working Students (직장인과 비직장인의 원격강의 수강참여 인식 비교연구)

  • It is assumed that there is difference between working students and non-working students with respect to distance learning. In this paper, we surveyed attendance in distance learning courses to verify differences in perception of faithfulness, studying time, and completion of content reading. The results are analyzed and reported. The statistical analysis indicates that working students perceive that they are less faithful to their lectures. However, the results pertaining to participation time per week and content reading showed no statistical difference between working students and non-working students.

  • Working Posture is an important factor directly connected with quality and productivity of the construction project. In particular, High-rise building construction is required to manage the working posture due to the repetitive task and unfavorable working condition such as high place work, limited space. However existing construction planning of high-rise building construction has a negative effect on the labor's productivity because it is not insufficiently considered for working posture. Therefore the purpose of this study is to suggest a work that needs improvement by analyzing labor's working posture quantitatively using OWAS method. These results would provide the basic information to improve the productivity of the construction project by supporting the construction plan considering the working posture in high-rise building.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate working clothes for shipbuilding workers who work in one of the poorest work environments among national strategic industries that are playing pivotal roles for the Korean economy. For the study method, requirements collected through interviews and field surveys were incorporated to directly weave the fabrics for working clothes. The colors were then selected and the woven fabrics were dyed with the selected colors. Using these, the designs of working clothes were planned from the construction and design aspects and four winter clothes and four spring and fall clothes were produced. Afterwards, the workers dressed in these clothes and workers and managers evaluated them in terms of appearance, color satisfaction, design satisfaction, and safety mind harmony on a five point scale. This study found that the new working clothes offered better functionality, design, and safety compared to existing working clothes.

  • This study investigates the working conditions of shift workers according to age group by analyzing the sixth Korean Working Conditions Survey's data. A total of 1,323 shift workers were extracted from the dataset. Three age groups (A: 20s-30s, B: 40s-50s, C: 60s and above) were statistically compared in terms of health problems, emotional hazard exposure, work-life imbalance, and satisfaction with working conditions. Elderly shift workers (those in their 60s and above) had significantly more severe health problems and work-life imbalance, greater exposure to emotional hazards, and lower satisfaction with working conditions than young shift workers (those in their 20s-50s). The study's findings reveal the characteristics of working conditions for elderly shift workers and would be useful for improving shift workers' quality of life, as well as safety and productivity in the workplace.
