  • Workflow is the automation of a business process, in whole or part, during which documents, information or tasks are passed from one participant to another for action, according to a set of procedural rules. The software selection problem is made difficult by the multiplicity of competing products and the lack of expertise and experience of users in the methods of software evaluation. Although the selection process for workflow is similar to that proposed for the acquisition of any software packages, differences arise in their evaluation criteria and choice methods. In this paper, we suggest the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) method for selecting workflow software. The AHP is an intuitively easy method for formulating and analyzing decisions. It was developed to solve a specific class of problems that involves prioritization of potential alternate solutions. We showed how to evaluate 9 commercial workflow products by deciding the relative importance of the main criteria in the AHP model. We utilized the evaluation data for criteria ready suggested by specialist groups. Our methodology will be helpful to those who are going to adopt a best workflow product in their organizations. Although the criteria and their evaluation scores regarding workflow products are suggested, it is not easy to apply them to a real case and get solutions without a model.

  • The design and development of a Web-based Workflow Management System (WfMS) is described in this paper. WfMSs are employed by many organizations to manage their business processes efficiently. The goal of this research is to provide an effective management of design processes in a distributed and heterogeneous environment-an environment in which workflow participants are geographically dispersed and use different computing platforms. We identify the requirements of WfMSs for the distributed and heterogeneous environment. We present an approach to applying the Web technology to was. The developed system is composed of three main modules: Worflow Engine, Web-based clients, and Process Designer. The workflow engine is implemented in pure Java for portability to heterogeneous platforms. furthermore, the client interfaces are all programmed using applets, and thus they can be readily accessed through the Internet/intranet. The Process Designer provides a build-time function of generating process specifications. Some important functions of the developed system are explained in this paper. A prototype system has been developed and applied to design processes. The system allows effective cooperation among designers who may be geographically separated.

  • Integration of engineering information through the IT (Information Technology) is very important key during the collaboration design process. How can we realize the data efficiently in real-time at the early design stage? How can we manage to integrate the separate information made by each designer or department effectively in real time? IT global trend is the unique way of handling these complicated problems from the information inundation. This paper suggests the design process management system deduced from the analytical results considering BPM (Business Process Management) solution workflow. Workflow based design process management system can help user share and integrate the needed information at the right time through Internet. It is found that the proposed tool works well for a beam design case, and this framework can be thus further expanded for an engineering design environment smoothly.

  • In e-business environment, business processes inevitably get more entangled and entail collaboration between distributed and heterogeneous platforms that are not easy to manage. Therefore, systematic and automated management of business process execution has drawn a great concern among companies that necessitate collaborative business processes. The concept of workflow inheritance enables abstraction, polymorphism and reusability of processes, and therefore contributes to extending and executing the processes effectively. We analyze various types of interoperation between business processes, and identify 6 primitive interoperability patterns. We propose a method for extensible collaborative process composition using workflow inheritance and provide collaborative workflow between business processes using web services.

  • Process mining is state-of-the-art technology in the workflow field. Recently, process mining becomes more important because of the fact that it shows the status of the actual behavior of the workflow model. However, as the process mining get focused and developed, the material of the process mining - workflow event log - also grows fast. Thus, the process mining algorithms cannot operate with some data because it is too large. To solve this problem, there should be a lightweight process mining algorithm, or the event log must be divided and processed partly. In this paper, we suggest a set of operations that control and edit XES based event logs for process mining. They are designed based on relational algebra, which is used in database management systems. We designed three operations for tailoring XES event logs. Select operation is an operation that gets specific attributes and excludes others. Thus, the output file has the same structure and contents of the original file, but each element has only the attributes user selected. Union operation makes two input XES files into one XES file. Two input files must be from the same process. As a result, the contents of the two files are integrated into one file. The final operation is a slice. It divides anXES file into several files by the number of traces. We will show the design methods and details below.

  • A hot-issued research topic in the workflow intelligence arena is the emerging topic of "workflow-supported organizational social networks." These specialized social networks have been proposed to primarily represent the process-driven work-sharing and work-collaborating relationships among the workflow-performers fulfilling a series of workflow-related operations in a workflow-supported organization. We can discover those organizational social networks, and visualize its analysis results as organizational knowledge. In this paper, we are particularly interested in how to visualize the degrees of closeness centralities among workflow-performers by proposing a graphical representation schema based on the Graph Markup Language, which is named to ccWSSN-GraphML. Additionally, we expatiate on the functional expansion of the closeness centralization formulas so as for the visualization framework to handle a group of workflow procedures (or a workflow package) with organizational workflow-performers.

  • In this paper, we describe the design details and their implementation of a workflow model (or business process model) analysis system to be used for enhancing resource allocation efficiency and operational performance of enterprise workflows. In other word, the analysis works, proposed in this paper, on XPDL-based workflow models aim to verify the static aspects of the workflow models. Also, the system implemented in the paper is able to not only analyze structural patterns and resource allocation plans' efficiency of enterprise workflows modeled by the XPDL process definition language developed by the international standardization organization, WfMC, but also provide various forms of analytical reports. Conclusively, we strongly believe that the workflow analysis system developed in the paper enables workflow modelers to not only analyze and scrutinize structural patterns of their workflow models but also estimate their process resources assigning and planning measurements in order to improve accuracy, reliability and efficiency of enterprise workflows.

  • During the early stage of radioactive disposal programs, important issues related with quality assurance of data sets, methodologies, R&D procedures are recognized as important ones. This paper focused on the development of web-based workflow standards for the QA procedures of the radioactive waste disposal programs. The flow of process was analyzed based on workflow concepts proposed by the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC). QA system is based on the principles of T2R3. T2R3 Workflow was used to standardize and restructure the business and/or work process in the industry or organization. The WfMC has identified five functional interfaces to a workflow service as part of its standardization program. They are composed of process definition interface, worklist handler, application program interface, interface between workflows, and system management. The task flow and QA program were defined based on the workflow ideas. QA procedures for the R&D results of radiation disoposal were analyzed following the reference model of workflow. In addition, six program run list were created and implemented. The creation, revision, and approval of the test data were designed to be inplemented on the web environment. Through this system, R&D procedures such as planning, research, documentation, internal review and future independent peer review processes could be well organized and stored more systematically on the database and knowledge base. This will encourage the usage and data sharing between interested parties through it's clear and transparent workflow standards.

  • This paper theoretically derives an algorithm to discover a new type of social networks from workflow models, which is termed workflow-based social network intelligence. In general, workflow intelligence (or business process intelligence) technology consists of four types of techniques that discover, analyze, monitor and control, and predict from workflow models and their execution histories. So, this paper proposes an algorithm, which is termed ICN-based workflow-based social network intelligence discovery algorithm, to be classified into the type of discovery techniques, which are able to discover workflow-based social network intelligence that are formed among workflow performers through a series of workflow models and their executions, In order particularly to prove the correctness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm, this paper tries to apply the algorithm to a specific workflow model and to show that it is able to generate its corresponding workflow-based social network intelligence.
