  • Service-oriented computing offers efficient solutions for executing complex applications in an acceptable amount of time. These solutions provide important computing and storage resources, but they are too difficult for individual users to handle. In fact, Service-oriented architectures are usually sophisticated in terms of design, specifications, and deployment. On the other hand, workflow management systems provide frameworks that help users to manage cooperative and interdependent processes in a convivial manner. In this paper, we propose a workflow-based approach to fully take advantage of new service-oriented architectures that take the users' skills and the internal complexity of their applications into account. To get to this point, we defined a novel framework named JASMIN, which is responsible for managing service-oriented workflows on distributed systems. JASMIN has two main components: unified modeling language (UML) to specify workflow models and business process execution language (BPEL) to generate and compose Web services. In order to cover both workflow and service concepts, we describe in this paper a refinement of UML activity diagrams and present a set of rules for mapping UML activity diagrams into BPEL specifications.

  • This paper conceives and implements an activity analysis method as a tool to be used for workflow visual verification and mining. One of the recent issues in the workflow and business process literature is to refine and to improve the deployed workflows and business processes. The activity analysis method proposed in this paper provides a way to fine a set of activities being directly affected by the specific activity that a user tries to change its properties. I would strongly believe that the method can be a useful solution for the dynamic changes and visual verifications problems of workflow models as well as the workflow process mining problems. Finally, to prove the possibility of the proposed method and its applicability, we apply to a workflow model of the electronic approval system run by a real corporation.

  • To realize process-driven management, so many companies have been launching business process managementsystems. Business process is collection of standardized and structured tasks inducing value creation of acompany. Moreover, it is recognized as one of significant intangible business assets to achieve competitiveadvantages. This research introduces a novel approach of workflow process analysis, which has more and moresignificance as process-aware information systems are spreading widely into a lot of companies, In this paper, amethodology of workflow clustering based on process similarity has been proposed. The purpose of workflowclustering is to analyze accumulated process definitions in order to assist design of new processes andimprovement of existing ones. The proposed methodology exploits measures of structural similarity of workflowprocesses. The methodology has been experimented with synthetic process models for illustrating the implicationofworkflow clustering.

  • We address an access control in the mobile agent-based workflow system. The Role Based Access Control (RBAC) is suitable to model the access control for business processes. However, current RBAC models are not adequate to mobile agent-based workflow system. Because separation of duties becomes complicated and it is impossible to perform several workflows at the same time. To solve these problems, we limit the scope of privilege within the specified task. We define considerations, specification of constraints needed in RBAC when tasks are involved. Also, we present an access control scenario and algorithms in the mobile agent-based workflow system.

  • Virtual manufacturing is a technology facilitating effective development and agile manufacturing of products via sophisticated computer models representing physical and logical schema and behavior of real manufacturing systems including manufacturing resources, environments, and products. Based on these models, virtual manufacturing supports decision making and error checking in the entire manufacturing processes from design to mass production. At first, we analyzed manufacturing preparation activities of the four major production shops such as press, body assembly, painting and final assembly, of a Korean automotive company. We then developed the workflow models out of the analysis by the IDEF methodology, and generated a strategic plan for the systematic application of the virtual manufacturing technologies. We identified many manufacturing preparation activities that can be improved by the application of virtual manufacturing technologies. Finally, we estimated the effect of improvement including time savings in car development processes and corresponding cost savings.

  • This paper proposed a workflow enactment model to provide process management functions for the next generation Internet service environment such as Web Service and Grid Computing. The existing enterprise workflow enactment models could not meet the scalability and reliability requirements for aforementioned environments. To satisfy these requirements, this study addressed on applying P2P model to the workflow enactment model. Mathematical description and proof were employed to show the recovery based on set theory and we also showed performance enhancement through simulations, which demonstrated a comprehensive result giving more than 100 times fast response time than the existing centralized model on the same resources.

  • Building envelope systems with growing complexity in geometry and performance criteria demand adapted workflow processes toward the efficient integration of their design and fabrication. To facilitate integration of the workflow process, this study analyzes relationships among teams who share digital models and exchange information that help project participants identify areas of improvement in task allocation and exchanges among various actors, systems, and activities. In addition, major gaps identified in knowledge transfer, project tracking, and design integration during the performance evaluation stages, emphasize the need for a more comprehensive approach to integrating the design, the fabrication, and the construction parameters of building envelope systems. To evaluate the effectiveness of streamlining interactions of design parameters with fabrication constraints and constructability assessments, this paper examines a mechanical design approach as it applies to various project scenarios to develop a mechanical solution for streamlining building envelope design and construction workflow.

  • Business Process Management (BPM) is an emerging trend of managing business process life cycles and integrating heterogeneous systems . Recently, BPM is considered as an essential element for automation of complex business processes involving many companies, particularly for those in an e-Business environment. In such an environment, it is very important for each business partner to trace history of resources. However, it has been a difficult problem for Workflow Management Systems(WFMSs) to support management of resource changes because of limited storage, complex process structure, and absence of formal change model. In this paper. a new framework is proposed, which can support change management for documents, one of core resources of business process. Under a traditional WFMSs framework, all workflow components belong to either build-time or run-time function, and executions of workflow processes are performed by the two functions . To manage changes of documents while process executing. a new framework with additional component modules are required. A version control method is introduced for the purpose of managing document changes. The proposed method includes five models for document structure, process structure, association between process and document, version management, and efficient version storage. A prototype system is developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models.

  • Some simulation tools have been developed to support business process reengineering. These tools can be used to not only analyze an as-is model of the existing process but also assess the potential value and feasibility of to-be models. But most of them are restricted to analyzing and redesign of the workflow only. Little attention is paid to the organization of people and their roles. This paper Presents a new methodology for business process simulation modeling and analysis. The methodology is based on the concepts of roles and customer-supplier chains. So the proposed methodology allows for tracking people and their roles affected by reengineering the business process. It enables one to analyze and evaluate not only workflow, but roles that are part of the flow. This paper developed a simulator to systematically construct simulation models and conduct simulations easily and efficiently. A case study is also presented as an illustrative example.

  • A type of workflow affiliation network is one of the specialized social network types, which represents the associative relation between actors and activities. There are many methods on a workflow affiliation network measuring centralities such as degree centrality, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, eigenvector centrality. In particular, we are interested in the closeness centrality measurements on a workflow affiliation network discovered from enterprise workflow models, and we know that the time complexity problem is raised according to increasing the size of the workflow affiliation network. This paper proposes an estimated ranking algorithm and analyzes the accuracy and average computation time of the proposed algorithm. As a result, we show that the accuracy improves 47.5%, 29.44% in the sizes of network and the rates of samples, respectively. Also the estimated ranking algorithm's average computation time improves more than 82.40%, comparison with the original algorithm, when the network size is 2400, sampling rate is 30%.
