  • This paper discusses the modeling and implementation of a worker location system at a shipbuilding site. The importance of worker location in an industrial environment is highlighted as a critical element in the prevention of industrial accidents. The paper presents a worker tracking system that integrates power line and beacon communication to accurately track worker position. Through experiments, the paper demonstrates how to monitor the changes in worker location based on different scenarios and how to access the status of worker location using the manager's web service. The paper can be used for the design of a system that will provide real-time location information to safety managers for the improvement of worker safety management.

  • Long-term care Insurance system for the Elderly was started to respond to the aged society on July 2008 in Korea. So responsibility of the care for the old is being changed from the family to the society. The introduction of that insurance system has brought the growth of demand for care service. To improve the level of quality for care service providers in long-term care, the role of care worker in providers is recognized as important. But welfare system for the care worker seems to be poor. So the Seoul Metropolitan Council is preparing an ordinance for the care worker and the purpose of this study is for the ordinance as well. Questionnaires, interviews, documentary surveys were used to carry out this study. The results of this study are summarized as follows. The job stability is the most important thing for the care worker, so local government has to make efforts to promote the job stability of care worker. A welfare center for care workers is needed for the health for care workers in the local government. And the local government has to supervise service providers more strictly and evaluate them in treatments of care worker.

  • Incorporation of individual learning and forgetting behaviors within worker-task assignment models produces a mixed integer nonlinear program (MINLP) problem, which is difficult to solve as a NP hard due to its nonlinearity in the objective function. Previous studies commonly assume homogeneity among workers in workforce scheduling that takes account of learning and forgetting characteristics. This paper expands previous researches by considering heterogeneous individual learning/forgetting, and investigates the impact of worker heterogeneity in initial expertise, steady-state productivity, learning and forgetting on system performance to assist manager's decision-making in worker-task assignments without tackling complex MINLP models. In order to understand the performance implications of workforce heterogeneity, this paper examines analytically how heterogeneity in each of the four parameters of the exponential learning and forgetting (L/F) model affects system performance in three cases : consecutive assignments with no break, n breaks of s-length each, and total b break-periods occurred over T periods. The study presents the direction of change in worker performance under different assignment schedules as the variance in initial expertise, steady-state productivity, learning or forgetting increases. Thus, it implies whether having more heterogenous workforce in terms of each of four parameters in the L/F model is desired or not in different schedules from the perspective of system productivity measurement.

  • In forest work, working conditions are very hard to improve. The good posture is believed to bring about direct improvements such as accident prevention. Therefore, this research carried on analysis of working posture in forest work (construct in stepping-stone) using OWAS analysis system. According to the analytical results provided by OWAS, the ratio of category III (Work posture has a distinctly harmful effect on the musculoskeletal system) has shawn that worker 2 was 32.2%, worker 1 was 25.2% and worker 3 was 15.5%. Furthermore, the ratio of category IV (Work posture with an extremely harmful effect on the musculoskeletal system) has shown that worker 2 was 9.8%, worker 3 was 1.4% and worker 1 was 1.2%. According to the OWAS method, percentage of OWAS action categories III and IV in the worker 2 was higher than another workers.

  • This paper proposes a maintenance method to integrate worker's safety concerns into the process activities of the manufacturing system and it is to be considered as a part of the scope of maintenance engineering. The proposed method incorporates worker's health and safety considerations into maintenance engineering in each of the manufacturing process using reliability analysis. It can help to make a better planning and implementation of maintenance activities for the manufacturing system.

  • Recently many accidents have been occurred on track workers, these accidents have strong relationship with increase of train speed, electrification and multiple track portion. As a first step for the safety management, domestic and abroad track worker accidents data are analysed for the risk estimation of track worker. Analysis results shows that contact between track worker and train is the dormant reason. In order to reduce dormant reason fault trees are constructed in this study.

  • The Asian honeybee, Apis cerana, is a native honeybee species in Korea which is important in agriculture for pollination and honey production. For better understanding of the physiology of A. cerana, high-throughput Illumina transcriptome sequencing was performed to analyze the gene expression profiles of queen, worker, and larva. A total of 219,799,682 clean reads corresponding to 22.2 Gb of nucleotide sequences was obtained from the whole body total RNA samples. The Apis mellifera reference mRNA sequence database was used to measure the gene expression level with Bowtie2 and eXpress software, and the Illumina short reads were then mapped to 11,459 out of 11,736 A. mellifera reference genes. Total of 9,221 genes with FPKM value greater than 5 of each sample group were subjected to eggNOG with BLASTX for gene ontology analysis. The differential gene expression between queen and worker, and worker and larva were analyzed to screen the overexpressed genes in each sample group. In the queen and worker sample group, total of 1,766 genes were differentially expressed with 887 and 879 genes overexpressed over two folds in queen and worker, respectively. In the worker and larva sample group, total of 1,410 genes were differentially expressed with 1,009 and 401 genes overexpressed over two folds in worker and larva, respectively.

  • The purposes of this study were to standardise the forest working system to design the intensity of working system in felling operation of the thinning forest in our country as well as to contrive the improvement of working method and the increase of productivity. For the purpose of investigating these, element working was classified by felling operation in softwood thinning forest, and a pulse rate were measured and analyzed. The results were as follow : 1. From the analysis of the pulse frequence measurment, the average pulse showed 108 pulse per minute for worker A in the total of pure working time, 130 pulse per minutes for worker B, 119 pulse per minute for worker C and 125 pulse per minute for worker D, respectively. 2. From the results of the pulse frequence analysis according to element working classification, the highest pulse frequence represented 115 pulse per minute for worker A in the circumference, 131 pulse per minute for worker B in the movement, 122 pulse per minute for worker C in the limbing operation and 128 pulse per minute for work D in hang-up. 3. If the original pulse frequence was 100% for workers, the working intensity showed as follow : worker A was 160%(original pulse frequence was 61=100%) for the total of the working intensity and 188% for the circumference among element working. Worker B was 220%(original pulse frequence was 57=100%) for the total of the working intensity and 229 for movement among element working. Worker C was 159%(original pulse frequence was 73=100%) for the total of the working intensity and 168% for limbing operation among the element working. Worker D was 156%(original pulse frequence was 70=100%) for the total of working intensity and 182% for hang-up among element working. 4. At the limit point of Labor performance rating, showing the total of working intensity, overtime pulse rate per minute was 30 for worker A, 207 for worker B, 14 for worker C and 67 for worker D. Worker B was highest in working intensity, and got physically a big load.

  • This paper presents an implementation of a gesture recognition platform that can be used in a factory workplaces. The platform consists of signages that display worker's job orders and a control center that is used to manage work orders for factory workers. Each worker does not need to bring work order documents and can browse the assigned work orders on the signage at his/her workplace. The contents of signage can be controlled by worker's hand and arm gestures. Gestures are extracted from body movement tracked by 3D depth camera and converted to the commandsthat control displayed content of the signage. Using the control center, the factory manager can assign tasks to each worker, upload work order documents to the system, and see each worker's progress. The implementation has been applied experimentally to a machining factory workplace. This flatform provides convenience for factory workers when they are working at workplaces, improves security of techincal documents, but can also be used to build smart factories.
