TiC-21 mol% Mo solid solution (${\delta}$-phase) and TiC-99 mol% Mo solid solution (${\beta}$-phase), and TiC-(80~90) mol% Mo hypo-eutectic composite were deformed by compression in a temperature range from room to 2300 K and in a strain rate range from $4.9{\times}10^{-5}$ to $6.9{\times}10^{-3}/s$. The deformation behaviors of the composites were analyzed from the strengths of the ${\delta}$- and ${\beta}$-phases. It was found that the high strength of the eutectic composite is due primarily to solution hardening of TiC by Mo, and that the ${\delta}$-phase undergoes an appreciable plastic deformation at and above 1420 K even at 0.2% plastic strain of the composite. The yield strength of the three kinds of phase up to 1420 K is quantitatively explained by the rule of mixture, where internal stresses introduced by plastic deformation are taken into account. Above 1420 K, however, the calculated yield strength was considerably larger than the measured strength. The yield stress of ${\beta}$-phase was much larger than that of pure TiC. A good linear relationship was held between the yield stress and the plastic strain rate in a double-logarithmic plot. The deformation behavior in ${\delta}$-phase was different among the three temperature ranges tested, i.e., low, intermediate and high. At an intermediate temperature, no yield drop occurred, and from the beginning the work hardening level was high. At the tested temperature, a good linear relationship was held in the double logarithmic plot of the yield stress against the plastic strain rate. The strain rate dependence of the yield stress was very weak up to 1273 K in the hypo-eutectic composite, but it became stronger as the temperature rose.

An optimal design of a multi-layered plate structure to endure high-velocity impact has been suggested by using size optimization after numerical simulations. The NET2D, a Lagrangian explicit time-integration finite element code for analyzing high-velocity impact, was used to find the parameters for the optimization. Three different materials such as mild steel, aluminum for a multi-layered plate structure and die steel for the pellet, were assumed. In order to consider the effects of strain rate hardening, strain hardening and thermal softening, Johnson-Cook model and Phenomenological Material Model were used as constitutive models for the simulation. It was carried out with several different gaps and thickness of layers to figure out the trend in terms of those parameters' changes under the constraint, which is against complete penetration. Also, the measuring domain has been shrunk with several elements to reduce the analyzing time. The response surface method based on the design of experiments was used as optimization algorithms. The optimized thickness of each layer in which perforation does not occur has been obtained at a constant velocity and a designated total thickness. The result is quite acceptable satisfying both the minimized deformation energy and the weight criteria. Furthermore, a conceptual idea for topology optimization was suggested for the future work.

Stress-strain curves based on Ramberg-Osgood and Hollomon relations are strongly dependent upon the regressed range of strain. This work investigates mathematical expressions of true stress-strain curves of metallic materials. We first observe the variation of yield strength, strain hardening exponent and stress-strain curve with regressed range of stain. Based on sectional regression and expression using one or two parameters, we propose an optimal strain range for which yield strength and nonlinear material behavior are quite appropriate.

An influence of the addition of copper (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mass% Cu) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high purity iron (99.998 mass%) was characterized. The microstructure and microhardness of high-purity iron based samples, which were rolled at room temperature and subsequently annealed, were investigated in this work. The microstructure of the samples has been observed by electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD) and the mechanical properties have been studied by using micro-Vickers hardness test. The results of microstructural observation showed that deformation band was formed in high purity iron by rolling at room temperature, and it was recovered by annealing up to about 900 K. The microhardness results showed that the softening of high-purity iron occurred by annealing up to about 900 K, while the hardness of iron added with about 0.5-1.5 mass% copper was kept over 100 Hv and at the early time of annealing reached a maximum. The hardness of iron added with a small amount of copper may be attributed to precipitation hardening as well as solution hardening. The orientation of crystal in recrystallized grain was almost same as that of deformed grain.
Most of the soil used for reclamation is marine clay generated from dredging construction. The soft ground made of dredged clay has high water content and high compressibility, so the bearing capacity of the ground is very weak and it is difficult to enter the ground improvement equipment. Therefore, surface hardening treatment method is used to enter equipment prior to full-scale civil engineering work, and stabilizer is mainly used for cement series. Cement-based stabilizers have the advantage of improving the ground in a short period of time and have excellent economic efficiency, but they are disadvantageous in that they cause environmental problems due to leaching of heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium. In this study, environmental effects evaluation of dredged clay mixed with normal portland cement and environmentally friendly stabilizer was evaluated, and uniaxial compressive strength test and indoor model test were conducted to confirm the bearing capacity characteristics of the solidified layer.
In the high-temperature and high-pressure irradiation environments, the multi-field coupling processes of hydrogen diffusion, hydride precipitation and mechanical deformation in Zircaloy cladding tubes occur. To simulate this hydrogen-induced complex behavior, a multi-field coupling method is developed, with the irradiation hardening effects and hydride-precipitation-induced expansion and hardening effects involved in the mechanical constitutive relation. The out-pile tests for a cracked cladding tube after irradiation are simulated, and the numerical results of the multi-fields at different temperatures are obtained and analyzed. The results indicate that: (1) the hydrostatic stress gradient is the fundamental factor to activate the hydrogen-induced multi-field coupling behavior excluding the temperature gradient; (2) in the local crack-tip region, hydrides will precipitate faster at the considered higher temperatures, which can be fundamentally attributed to the sensitivity of TSSP and hydrogen diffusion coefficient to temperature. The mechanism is partly explained for the enlarged velocity values of delayed hydride cracking (DHC) at high temperatures before crack arrest. This work lays a foundation for the future research on DHC.
In this study, we investigated the effects of extrusion ratio and extrusion temperature on the microstructure and tensile properties of extruded Mg-6Al-0.3Mn-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN6) alloy. As the extrusion ratio and temperature increase, dynamic recrystallization during extrusion is promoted, leading to the formation of a fully recrystallized microstructure with increased grain size. Additionally, the increases in extrusion ratio and temperature lead to texture strengthening, exhibiting a higher maximum texture intensity. The extruded materials contain three types of secondary phases, i.e., Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, with irregular or polygonal shapes. The quantity, size, distribution, and area fraction of the second-phase particles are nearly identical between the two materials. Despite its larger grain size, the tensile yield strength of the material extruded at 450 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 25 (450-25) is higher than that of the material extruded at 325 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 10 (325-10), which is mainly attributed to the stronger texture hardening effect of the former. The ultimate tensile strength is similar in the two materials, owing to the higher work hardening rate in the 325-10 extrudate. Despite differences in grain size and recrystallization fraction, numerous twins are formed throughout the specimen during tensile deformation in both materials; consequently, the two materials exhibit nearly the same tensile elongation.

Microstructure and hardness of metallic powder of Cu was studied after high pressure torsion (HPT) with 10 torsions and high pressure of 6 GPa. The size Cu grain decreases drastically after HPT and reaches the nano size range. During HPT, Cu powder increases hardness and Hall-Petch hardening, due to the decreasing grain size. In this study, effect of HPT on the hardness of Cu powders and consolidation with Nanocrystalline of the work reported here. The results indicated that Cu powder has a beneficial effect on homogeneous deformation, reducing grain size.
This paper presents a framework how to estimate crack driving forces in terms of crack-tip opening displacement and J-integral for mismatched dissimilar joints with interface cracks. The mismatch in elastic, thermal, and plastic hardening properties is not considered, but the mismatch in plastic yield strengths is emphasized here. The main outcome of the present work is that the existing methods to estimate crack driving forces for homogeneous materials can be used with slight modification. Such modification includes (i) mismatch- corrected limit load solutions, and (ii) evaluating the contribution of each material in dissimilar joints to the total crack driving force, which depends on the strength mismatch of the dissimilar joints.

This study is concerned with creep mechanism of SUS 316 under high stresses. Creep tests were conducted at temperatures between $480^{\circ} and $820^{\circ}C and stresses between 7.6 and 24.6$kg/mm^2$. To investigate the mechanism of the steady-state creep under high stresses, work hardening coefficient and activation energy are obtained. The activation energy was calculated by means of the temperature differential test together with the method of correlating the creep rates against the inverse of the absolute temperature for different stresses and strains. From the experimental results and their analyzed facts, it is concluded that the steady-state creep behavior of SUS 316 under high stresses is controlled by dislocation glide mechanism.
