  • In this paper we make a rule of pitch variation for a natural synthetic female voice. Intonation phrase, which is the basic unit the rule is applied to, mostly consists of a syllable or syllables. The pitch values of the first, second, and final syllables make up the pitch contour of the intonation phrase. Those of the first and second syllable are determined by the initial consonants of the respective syllables, and that of the final syllable by the type of the function word. There are two kinds of boundaries between intonation phrases. One is a boundary with pause, and the other is a boundary without pause. The pitch contour of the intonation phrase with the boundary phenomena determines the pitch pattern of a sentence.

  • This paper is our first attempt to construct a information processing system such as the living creatures' brain based on artificial life technique. In this paper, we propose a method of constructing neural networks using bio-inspired emergent and evolutionary concept, Ontogeny of living things is realized by cellular automata model and Phylogeny that is living things adaptation ability themselves to given environment, are realized by evolutionary algorithms. Proposing evolving cellular automata neural systems are calledin a word ECANS. A basic component of ECANS is 'cell' which is modeled on chaotic neuron with complex characteristics, In our system, the states of cell are classified into eight by method of connection neighborhood cells. When a problem is given, ECANS adapt itself to the problem by evolutionary method. For fixed cells transition rule, the structure of neural network is adapted by change of initial cell' arrangement. This initial cell is to become a network b developmental process. The effectiveness and the capability of proposed scheme are verified by applying it to pattern classification and robot control problem.

  • The purpose of this paper is to generate a pitch contour which is affected by tile phonetic environment and the number of syllables in each Korean isolated word using a neural network. To do this, we analyzed a set of 513 Korean isolated words, consisting of 1-4 syllables and extracted the pitch contour and the duration of each phoneme in all the words. The total number of phonemes we analyzed is about 3800. After that we approximated the pitch contour with a 1st order polynominal by a regression analysis. We could get the slope, the initial pitch and the duration of each phoneme. We used these 3 parameters as the target pattern of the neural network and let the neural network learn the rule of the variation of the pitch and duration, which was affected by the phonetic environment of each phoneme. We used 7 consecutive phoneme strings as an input pattern for a neural network to make the network learn the effect of phonetic environment around the center phoneme. In the learning phase, we used 3545 items(463 words) as target patterns which contained the phonetic environment of front and rear 3 phonemes and the neural network showed the correctness rate of 98.43%, 98.59%, 97.7% in the estimation of the duration, the slope, the initial pitch. In the recall phase, we tested the performance of tile neural network with 251 items(50 words) which weren't need as learning data and we could get the good correctness rate of 97.34%, 95.45%, 96.3% in the generation of the duration, the slope, and the initial pitch of each phoneme.

  • The early 20th century is a period of time when Korea confronted with the surging waves of modernization, and made a variety of internal reactions. The Korean language, not immune to the upheaval, also experienced new changes and gradually gained characteristics of today's Korean. Although scholars have not yet fully agreed upon the time division of Korean, Gabo reformation (1896) is usually considered to be the beginning of modern Korean. Thus, the early 20th century was also the beginning of modern Korean. Phonological, lexical, and grammatical characteristics of modern day Korean began to appear during this period of time. Phonologically, the 10 vowel system was established, glottal sounds and aspirated sounds increased, vowel harmony declined. Phenomena such as vowel raising, front-vowelization, monophthongization, and the word-initial rule appeared. Meanwhile, hangul-Chinese mix writing became common practice, and hangul-only writing also started to take place in narrative writing, and elements of spoken language began to reflect in written language. All those pointed to the unification of written and spoken language. Under the influence of modernization, a great amount of new words appeared. Especially, Japanese and other foreign words flooded in in great quantities. Grammatically, '-eos-(-엇-), -neun-(-는-), -ges-(-겟-)' trichotomy system of tenses was established, and hearer-oriented honorific system also formed a binary system of 'hasoseo(하소서), hasibsio(하십시오), hao(하오), hage(하게), haera(해라)' and 'hae (해), haeyo(해요)'. In word formation and sentence construction, the use of '-gi(-기)' became more frequent than '-eum(-음)', while '~geot(~것)' also significantly increased. In negative, causative and passive expressions, the use of long form, which has fewer restrictions than the short form, became more frequent. A tendency towards simplicity appeared. In the same vain, long and complex sentences with several clauses tend to be avoided. Instead, short simple sentences became more favorable. Korean linguistics scholars should pay closer attention to the modernization period, which includes the early 20th century. In order to fully understand today's Korean language, more thorough research on this immediately preceding period is necessary.

  • In this research, we attempt to suggest the differences between Korean translation and the North Korean translation of the game 'Paper, Please'; moreover, we will consider about the effect of language and image on localization through this. North Korean language and cultural contents in 'Paper, Please' are evaluated well by many people that they show real life of North Korea even though there are some errors like loanword translations and using anachronic symbol, 'Kaksital' as secret organization. Through the research, we could know that people could concentrate on cultural contents by images and motives without critical errors so have fun.

  • This study examines the perceptual motivation behind dissimilation. Consistent with previous arguments suggesting that dissimilation originates from perception rather than production (Coetzee, 2005; Kiparsky, 2003; Scheer, 2013), we hypothesized that an oral stop with short of voice onset time (VOT) would be recognized as non-aspirated more often when it is followed by an aspirated stop with a long VOT. This hypothesis was tested through a perception experiment in which 32 Korean listeners made judgments on the first consonant of C1VC2V words manipulated with C1 VOT and C2 types. The results revealed that aspirated-based C1 was recognized as aspirated or tense depending on the duration of VOT, while lenis-based C1 was consistently recognized as lenis. The dissimilatory effect of aspirated C2 was confirmed as anticipated, and furthermore, tense C2 increased the ratio of tense responses more than aspirated C2. These results provide evidence of a perceptual bias against recurrent aspirated stops, which may play a role in activating a dissimilatory rule or constraint in a language. The assimilatory effect of tense C2 is in consistent with findings indicating that word-initial tensification is facilitated by the following tense stop in Korean (Kang & Oh, 2016; H. Kim, 2016).

  • This study closely analyzed poems and paintings related to Beijing-Palgyeong, as well as ancient maps and ancient writings. Through the study, people who read this study can consider, Beijing-Palgyeong's the process of changing times, changing landscape perception, physical and symbolic landscape elements, structural analysis, national management relationships, and finally how it was localized as symbolic place. The view point of the Beijing-Palgyeong is distributed in four places, one outside and one inside the city. Outside of the capital city of Beijing-Palgyeong were concentrated in Seosan(西山) where the resting place of the emperor and the center of the landscape view of Beijing. The view point of Beijing-Palgyeong inside the capital city is located in two places in the royal palace's Imperial Garden and in two villages around the fortress. In other words, Beijing-Palgyeong was selected as a place closely related to the imperial family, emperor, and royal palace from the time of its initial creation. Since then, many scholars, including the emperor, have used it for national management through Won(元), Ming and Qing Dynasty, and it have become more and more characteristic of 'The capital city of eight scenic views'. The two places inside the capital city praised the Gods and Emperors in the same way. Outside the capital city, the two sites depict the comfortable lives of the people who are governed by the emperor and depicting the village landscape around the city. In the end, it can be seen that most of the Beijing-Palgyeong are related to imperial palaces and emperors. If you look at the physical landscape of Beijing-Palgyeong by element, it mainly contains the contents of national management and the emperor's eulogy. Qianlong Emperor established the Beijing-Palgyeong in 1751 through the construction of a monument. A four-character on the front of the monument, and inscribed with a seven-word written by the person on the back. It can be said that Qianlong Emperor's Beijing-Palgyeong were intended to show off the results of Manchurian rule through the material symbol of the monument. Beijing-Palgyeong have been transformed into a landmark, and modern people use it as an indicator of the Beijing-Palgyeong.
