In order to develop value-added utilization technology of domestic oaks the processing yield rate from the standing tree to the flooring material for the Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica were investigated. Also, to reduce drying time, improved drying schedule was applied and the physical properties were measured. The drying time was 173 hours in total, and the final moisture content was 5.39% (Quercus variabilis) and 4.17% (Quercus mongolica). The color difference of oak lumber before and after drying showed a significant change as ${\Delta}E$ value from 7 to 11. The shrinkage rates of Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica during drying were 8.1% and 8.5% in the tangential direction and 5.0% and 6.2% in the radial direction, respectively. The lumber manufacturing yield rate of sawn lumber was 30 to 40% and that of the final product was 8 to 15%. It is expected that the processing characteristics of the Quercus species investigated in this research could contribute to formulate an efficient production plan of domestic hardwoods that are still under utilization.
Five waterlogged wood artefacts were excavated from Suyeong-ri site in Hwaseong, South Korea. The aim of the present study was to identify the species and estimate the date of manufacture and the manufacturing method of these artefacts. The study also aimed to conserve the original shapes of waterlogged wood artefacts by using the vacuum freeze drying method. The two large waterlogged woods were identified as Ulmus spp. and Morus spp., whereas one of the three small waterlogged woods was identified as Abies spp. and the other two as hard pine. Radiocarbon dating using wiggle match dated the manufacturing of these wooden artefacts between BCE 8520-8490 or BCE 8470-8290 in the Neolithic age, and a similar period was also confirmed for seed excavated from a place close to the location where the waterlogged wood artefacts were excavated. The surface of waterlogged wood artefacts had several traces of manufacturing processes - traces of tearing and chopping - were observed. Based on these observations, it was confirmed that stone adz was used to make these wooden artefacts. Thereafter, the waterlogged wood samples were conserved by immersing them into PEG#4,000 of concentration in water from 10% to 40% at room temperature(15~25℃) and subjecting them to vacuum freeze drying. However, the internal moisture was not completely removed in some thick parts of waterlogged woods by applying the general schedule such as raising the shelf temperature as the surface temperature rises. Therefore, additional study is required using the schedule-method for vacuum freeze drying of large waterlogged wood.

The present study aimed to monitor changes in the amount of PEG free-flowing back from PEG-treated woods and compressive strength changes with change in relative humidity from 90% to 30%. The change in the relative humidity was done 3 times. For the current study, water-logged wood (Prinus group) was used and the wooden blocks cut out of it were subjected to 3 different impregnation methods combined with different drying conditions as follows: 1) impregnating with 80% PEG#4000 followed by drying in nature (hereafter PEG80), 2) impregnating with 40% PEG#4000 and then drying in vacuum freeze drying equipment (hereafter PEG40), and 3) impregnating with 40% PEG#4000 in t-butanol, followed by drying in the vacuum freeze drying equipment (hereafter TB40). It was verified that most of the PEG was free-flowing back from the PEG-treated woods; however, a small amount of left PEG was observed on the lumen surface. The amount of PEG free-flowing back from the PEG-treated woods increased whenever the relative humidity changes from 90% to 30%. The compressive strengths of PEG80 and TB40 were increased whenever the relative humidity changed from 90% to 30%, whereas PEG40 decreased. The current study showed how to control the relative humidity to effectively manage PEG-treated waterlogged woods.
This study is to examine the PEG concentration, and drying humidity and drying periods of humidity-controlled drying(HCD) for conservation of waterlogged woods(Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), and dimension stability of HCD were compared with those of air-drying and vacuum freeze-drying(VFD). Dimension stability of vacuum freeze-drying was the most excellent, i.e., PEG crystal was uniformly distributed in woods. Increasing concentrations of PEG, dimension stability of HCD was increased and drying periods decreased. Dimension stability of HCD after the treatment with the high concentration(70%) of PEG soaking was similar to those of VFD after the treatment with the low concentration(40%) of PEG soaking. In conclusion, high concentration(about 70% in water) PEG solution was the most suitable as a pre-treatment for HCD of waterlogged woods. However, drying should be maintained with enough high humidity and longer period.
Red pine(Pinus densiflora) square timbers with 14.0 cm and 16.5 cm of face size and 24 m long were dried in a vacuum-press kiln and in a radio-frequency/vacuum(RF/V) kiln to compare drying rate, moisture content(MC) distribution and specific energy. RF/V drying rate was higher than vacuum-press drying rate. The effect of size of cross section on the RF/V drying rates were more pronounced than those of vacuum-press drying. The longitudinal- and the transverse MC distribution of dried square timber showed convex profile for the vacuum-press drying and concave profile for the RF/V drying. Moisture gradient of width direction was similar to the thickness direction in vacuum-press dried square timber and was more slight than that of the thickness direction in the RF/V dried large square timber. The specific energy consumption curve increased as MC decreased. Specific energy(kWh/kg of water evaporated) of the vacuum-press process required more than that of the RF/V process.
Persimmon boards of 30mm thick were dried, their temperatures were monitored during drying with 490 and 200watt microwave, and the drying efficacy and problems were investigated. The effects of pretreatments such as presteaming and prefreezing were also examined. The persimmon green lumbers of 80% moisture content were dried to 10% for only 50~60 and 110 minutes with 49watt and 200watt microwave, respectively. Severe internal checks were, however, found in all boards. The presteamed boards collapsed on their surfaces earlier than the controls. It may attribute to the high temperature inside boards during microwave drying and the decrease of their internal tensile strength caused by the presteaming treatment. To increase the internal tensile strength of the pretreated boards and to reduce their internal checks, they were air-dried at room temperature. The air-dried boards could be dried to 10% moisture content clearly and free from defects with 200watt microwave. The heating efficiency were also calculated with the maximum weight loss per minute of 490watt and 200watt.

The increase of wet web solid content in wet pressing will save drying energy greatly. We applied wood flours as spacers to increase the old corrugated container (OCC) solid contents in wet pressing. The mixed furnish of OCC and wood flours of 3-5% (wt/wt) increased bulk and drainage rate, and by increasing wet pressing pressure, its solid content started to be higher than 100% OCC furnish at more than 50% solid content level. Addition of cationic starch and drainage aid to the mixed furnish increased solid content further up to around 2%. Cationic starch addition compensated or exceeded the loss of tensile and compressive strength caused by the addition of wood flour, but drainage aid did not. Cationic starch also improved the stretch of the OCC, which could mitigate cracking at folding in boxboard.
This study was carried out to estimate drying schedule of Fagaceae four species grown in Kangwon-Do by oven-drying at $100^{\circ}C$ which aimed to elucidate the characteristics such as current moisture content, drying process, initial check, collapse and internal check during drying following each board thickness (1.5cm, 2.5cm, 3.5cm, 4.5cm). The results were as follows; Current moisture content of each board showed a rapid drying curve with the high initial moisture content of board. With the high initial moisture content, the incease of board thickness and the slowness of changing rate of moisture content, species took long to do drying. Also, the initial conditions of drying had to be mild condition with the increase of board thickness.
Exterior grades of Douglas-fir and aspen plywood were impregnated with interior fire-retardant chemicals and redried under low-, intermediate-, and high-temperature drying conditions. Fire-retardant treatments included borax-boric acid, chromated zinc chloride, minalith, pyresote, and a commercial formulation. Drying processes included kiln and press-drying. Evaluated were drying rates and defects generated. The borax-boric acid and the commercial treatments redried at rates similar to water-treated controls. Other salt treatments were significantly slower drying and more defect prone. Chromated zinc chloride treatment was consistently the slowest drying and most defect prone. Press drying was three times faster at an equivalent temperature level. However, thickness shrinkage doubled because of 50 1b/in. platen pressure.
This study was carried out to estimate drying schedule of Fagaceae four species grown in Kangwon-Do by oven-drying at $100^{\circ}C$ which aimed to elucidate the characteristics such as current moisture content, drying process, initial check, collapse and internal check during drying. The results were summerized as follows ; Current moisture content of each board showed a rapid drying curve with the hight initial moisture content of board and species with the high initial moisture content took long to do drying. Appearance of checks for Quercus variabilis were extremely severe and estimated schedule was $T_5-C_2$. The shrinkage rate of grain direction was in the order of tangential direction > radial direction > longitudial direction and the shrinkage rate of oven-drying at $100^{\circ}C$ was bigger than normal shrinkage rate.
