Over the last decade, Sick Building Syndrome has become a significant social issue in Korea and many methods have been considered to maintain comfortable indoor air quality. To reduce toxic substances emitted from wood composite products, the source control is an efficient method through the reduction of formaldehyde content by using natural material-based adhesives for composite wood products production. Among alternative materials, soybean protein is considered an appropriate natural material to replace formaldehyde-based resin and many efforts have been made to produce new products, such as soap, shampoo, ink, resin, adhesive and textile through changing the chemical or physical properties of soybean. To process soybeans into these useful products, the beans are dehulled and the oil is removed by crushing at very high pressure or by solvent extraction. For use soybean as an adhesive, it is processed at temperatures below $70^{\circ}C$ to preserve the alkaline solubility of the proteins. In addition, soybean-based adhesive is undergone treatment process to improve mechanical properties using urea, urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The modified soybean-based adhesive exhibited sufficient mechanical properties to use as an adhesive for composite wood products. This paper is a review article to discuss the possibilities of soybean-based adhesive for environment-friendly furniture materials.

Composite wood materials are very sensitive to water and inspection without any coupling medium of a liquid is really needed to wood materials due to the permeation of coupling medium such as water. However, air-coupled ultrasound has obvious advantages over water-coupled experimentation compared with conventional C-scanner. In this work, it is desirable to perform contact-less nondestructive evaluation to assess wood material homogeneity. A wood material was nondestructively characterized with non-contact and contact modes to measure ultrasonic velocity using automated data acquisition software. We have utilized a proposed peak-delay measurement method. Also through transmission mode was performed because of the main limitation for air-coupled transducers, which is the acoustic impedance mismatch between most materials and air. The variation of ultrasonic velocity was found to be somewhat difference due to air-coupled limitations over conventional scan images. However, conventional C-scan images are well agreed with increasing the resin-infiltrated time as expected. Finally, we have developed a measurement system of an ultrasonic velocity based on data acquisition software for obtaining ultrasonic quantitative data for correlation with C-scan images.
The flame retardancy of plywood should be improved as much as possible while minimizing the impact on the bonding strength of plywood. Six commercial flame retardants and three laboratory synthesized phosphorous nitrogen flame retardants were selected. E0, E1 and E2 grade commercial formaldehyde resins (UF) were applied in this study to evaluate the effect of different flame retardants on the curing time of resin, bonding strength, flame retardant performance, and formaldehyde emission of plywood. The results show that the effect of the addition of different flame retardants on the bonding strength of plywood gradually decreased with the increase of the formaldehyde molar ratio of the resin. The effect of flame retardants on the curing time of UF gradually decreased as the mole ratio of formaldehyde increasing, while the amount of formaldehyde emission varied according to the content of formaldehyde in the flame retardant. Compared with plywood without flame retardant, flame retardant of plywood added with phosphorous nitrogen flame retardant was improved.

An experiment was conducted to suggest the road pavement material combining wooden chip crushed from little useful roots and branches from logging sites or wood waste from construction sites with urethane resin. For the specimen, the mass ratio of urethane resin to construction wood waste chip/lumber waster chip was set to three different levels of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0, which was measured, mixed with mixer, and molded; 7 days after, tensile strength test, elasticity test using golf balls and steel balls, permeability coefficient measurement, and flammability test were executed. As the result, the tensile strength of the specimen at the dry state in the air exhibited the range of 0.2-1.1MPa, and there was no change after 7 days of aging. When submerged in water, however, the strength was partially diminished; the diminishing rate was greater for less urethane resin usage, and therefore it appears desirable to set the mass ratio of resin to the wood waste chip over 0.75 to consider the moisture intrusion by precipitation and such. As the result of elasticity test, the GB and SB coefficients of the specimen using wood waste chips and urethane resin were measured to be low at below 20%, exhibiting excellent elasticity as road pavement material. Also, the permeability coefficient was over 0.5mm/sec for specimens of all combinations, exceeding the standard value required after construction for permeable pavement material, and the flammability of wood-type pavement material was evaluated to have no practical issues.
Wood composites are a hygroscopic material and have ability to exchange its moisture content with air. This study investigated the formaldehyde emission and moisture content change of four wood composites (particleboard (PB), medium density fiberboard (MDF), high density fiberboard (HDF), laminated HDF (L-HDF)) as a function of bake-out temperature and time. The composites were baked out for 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28 days at temperatures of $20{\pm}2$, $35{\pm}2$, and $50{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ in a dry oven. The moisture content change was used to determine the emission bake-out of the composites. Best bake-out time results were obtained with after 7 days all composites. Formaldehyde emission values of composites decreased with decreasing moisture content for both temperatures. The formaldehyde emission results of bake-out temperature 35 and $50^{\circ}C$ showed a similar tendency.
In this study, it is intended that utilize the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method, to evaluate the environmental impact of wood pellet manufacturing facility. As mentioned above, wood pellet manufacturing facility of 20 has produced wood pellets as a raw material sawdust and wood in our country. In this study, in order to feature manufacturing process of wood pellets that resemble almost necessary to analyze evenly size and characteristics of various equipment whether these reasonable, the characteristics of the equipment may be different, the production of 20 places I surveyed the facility one central timber distribution center one large scale most of the equipment.
This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of wood-based panels and wood-cement board for the possible uses as flooring and wall materials. The optimum cement/wood ratio(C/W ratio) of wood~cement board manufactured by clamp-pressing was from 2.7 to 3.2. The dimesional stability was superior in the C/W ratio of 3.2. Particularly, the dimensional stability of cement board using fine particle for particleboard face layer was favorable through three levels of C/W ratio. According to types of wooden material, bending strength of cement board using coarse particle for particleboard core layer or old newspaper(ONP) fiber was relatively higher than others. Thermal conductivities of wood-cement boards were no lower than that of gypsum board, and higher than those of plywood and boards. In case of wood-cement board of the C/W ratio of 2.7, the fire-proof performances of cement composite boards were greater than that of gypsum board, and weight loss reached to about a half of gypsum board. Then, wood-cement boards showed superior fire-proof performance compared to wood-based panels.
This study investigated the hygroscopicity and UV deterioration characteristics of 3 domestic and 4 imported woods using natural oil, stain, and varnish paints. In terms of hygroscopicity, it was found that the hygroscopicity of the painted wood was lower than that of the unpainted wood, and that as the number of coatings increased, the hygroscopicity decreased. In terms of anti-absorption, oil-based chemical paints showed higher resistance than water-based paints, and natural oils showed results comparable to oil-based paints. As for the UV deterioration, the amount of color change of the painted wood was lower than that of the unpainted wood, and there was no significant difference according to the number of times of painting. The amount of color change was found to be low in oil-based paints and hardwoods. Through this study, we confirmed effective moisture blocking and small color changes during painting using paints, and it is believed that wood can be protected from internal and external defects through selective and efficient painting based on data for excellent painting performance.
A comparative research on the traditional standard wood walls and other light-frame wood walls is necessary to expand the base of wooden buildings and improve consumer satisfaction. Therefore, in this research we looked for new possibilities through comparison of performance between standard wood wall and newly presented staggered stud wood wall. First, the strength characteristics of staggered stud wood walls were evaluated and the those of standard wood walls were compared. The ultimate load of the standard wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall, because the cross section of the wood making up the standard wood wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall. However, the statistical analysis between the two groups didn't showed a significance of 95% confidence level. This means that, staggered stud wood walls have shown the possibility of replacing the standard wood wall. Because the cross-section of the stud in the staggered stud wood walls is smaller than that of the standard wall, the material can be saved. Therefore, staggerd wood stud wall is judged to be more economical than the standard wall. In addition, since the area of the insulation also increases, improvement of the heat bridge is also expected.

This study investigates fire-retardant performances and combustion/thermal characteristics of fire-retardant treated wood by comparing them with those of fire-retardant untreated wood from the expreimental resutls of cone calorimeter and thermo-gravimetric(TG) analyzer. Hazardousness of combustion product gases for fire-retardant treated wood and untreasted wood were also observed from the results of internal finish material incombustibility test according to the Korea standard code of KS F 2271. In this study, we also tried to improve the fire retardant performance of wood by applying fire-retardant chemical composites, and to secure the fire safety performance in buildings. Red pine (Pinus densiflora) was selected as a test specimen because it is mostly used as a building material in Korea. Fire retardant chemical composites (FRCs) were prepared by mixing boron, phosphorous, and nitrogen species and treated by press-impregnation method. Water-based FRCs were composed of 3% boric acid($H_3BO_3$), 3% borax decahydrate($Na_2B_4O_7$), 8% ammonium carbonate($(NH_4)_2CO_3$), diammonium phosphate ($(NH_4)_2HPO_4$) varied from 10-30% and potassium carbonate($K_2CO_3$) varied from 10-30%. From the test results of cone calorimeter, TG analysis and gas hazard assessments, newly proposed were the optimal composition and production methods of FRCs which can sufficiently meet fire-retardant level 3 based on Korea law of construction. Thus, the FRCs, developed in this study, are anticipated to contribute to the improvement of fire safety and widespread of usage in wood as building materials.
