After having one-to-one interviews with 567 elderly women who they were over 60 in their age in Incheon during the winter of 2000/2001, the differences of their preferences to practicability, economic/comfort, esthetic, symbolic, brand and service were analyzed by SPSS Win pack. When they bought their underwear, they were interested in its practicability most but not its esthetic, brand and service. The more learned and richer economically they were, the shorter sleeves and pants underwear thor had preferences to wear. Most of them wear underwear to keep warm during winter, but some of them wear habitually. They frequently boiled their underwear after washing in warm water with hands. From these tendency underwear for the elderly women should be specified both in bust circumference and in the length of sleeves or pants.

  • The essay focuses on the relationship between the soldiers and the oppressed women in Lynn Nottage's Ruined (2009) in terms of Julia Kristeva's abject to show how the abjected Congolese women expose the falsehood of the order and identity that the military forces try to construct and maintain by war and violence. According to Kristeva, the abject is something that is rejected for the repulsion and horror it arouses but constantly draws the subject to it at the same time. Physically impaired and socially stigmatized, sexually abused Congolese women find a shelter in Mama Nadi's bar, the only place where they can continue their lives as the abject since the place, like the women themselves, lies outside the symbolic order occupied and corrupted by the men of DRC. Although the men involved in the armed conflict have abjected the women in pursuit of their own system and order, the women are not simply the objects of abuse and oppression. The men have to rely on Mama Nadi and her women not only to reaffirm their identity and power by suppressing them but also to fulfill their biological needs. In addition, the women's resistance against the soldiers demonstrates their power to challenge the men's symbolic order and expose its frailty. Apropos of the abject's resistance, various artistic genres such as poetry, music and dance appear in the play as an escape from the grim reality and a means of challenging and transcending the symbolic order. Bringing all these artistic elements together into a powerful piece of theatre-often considered as an 'abject' genre nowadays, Nottage demonstrates both the power of theatre as well as the tenacious Congolese women.

  • A cross-sectional analysis of blood pressure (BP) changes and the current prevalence and distribution of hypertension among age groups in Korea were conducted. Systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP), and pulse (PP) pressures were evaluated. Residents visiting a local Community Health Center for a health check-up and/or participating in the Health Promotion Program were included for the analyses. A total of 6,570 subjects (2,809 men, 3,761 women) were divided into five age groups: 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and $70\leq$ years. Comparisons were made between sex and among age groups. SBP and DBP were continuously elevated, while men showed higher levels than women until their mid-60s; then, the trend was reversed. DBP in men became elevated from their 30s, reaching the highest in the 40s then slowly decreasing. DBP in women increased up to their 40s and 50s, then reached a plateau. PP increased rapidly from the 50s in both sexes. The major contributor of age-related BP elevation may be large artery stiffness in men, particularly from their 50s, while the blood pressure elevation of women may relate to diverse factors including large artery stiffness, stroke volume, and ventricular ejection rate. The rapid elevation of PP after the 50s in both men and women could represent a risk of cardiovascular or coronary mortality, particularly with increasing age. The current data showed a higher rate of hypertension in both sexes compared to previous reports. When those with both high-normal BP and hypertension are looked at in combination, BP management of the target population should be drastically elevated.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the relationships between women's social status, social participation, freedom, and clothing, and the manner in which women's clothing affected women's freedom and social participation through the centuries. The stimuli for the study were six images that were used to ask about women's perception of clothing and their social participation. The analysis of the study was used to provide descriptive statistics, frequencies, and Independent sample t-test. The study participants were 268 female college students from a central university in Korea. The participants' ages ranged from 18 to 33 years, with a mean age of 20.93. Ninety-seven percent of the participants said they usually or always were influenced emotionally, psychologically and in terms of external factors by what they wear. Approximately 60% of the women answered that women were limited to social participation by what they wear. These study results indicated that clothing for women did not just function to cover the body, but was also used as a tool to restrict women's behavior, social role, gender discrimination, and social participation.

  • As the seriousness of hypertension in adults is increasingly recognized, attention is being focussed on its control through continuous health supervisions. Complications arising from high blood pressure exceed those of many other adult health problems and affect the nursing needs of these patients. In order to contribute to effective nursing care planning and improved health supervision, 248 medical records of hypertensive patients admitted to Internal Medicine at Ewha Medical Center from January 1971 to August 1976 were examined. Results were as fellows: 1. The sample group averaged 5.0% of the total number of patients admitted to internal medicine during the period studied. The proportion increased slightly with each successive year. 2. Patients with hypertension averaged 31.4% of all patients with cardiovascular discease. This proportion was stable over the period. 3. Hypertensive patients were primarily in their 40s. The average age was 55.1 years. 4. Women were most frequently affected in their 60s and men in their 40s. 5. The bloo pressure of these in their 30s was not well controlled on discharge. Rates for those in their 30s averaged 151.5/107mmhg, for those in their 40s 161.5/110mphg, and for those in their 60s 169/100mmhg. 6. Complications increased with each age range from the 40s to the 60s for both men and women. 7. Complications related to systolic hypertension occurred most frequently when the rate exceeded 200mmhg. Cerebral vascular accident was the primary complication, presenting implications for nursing intervention. 8. Complications related to diastolic hypertension occurred most frequently when the rate was in the $110{\sim}129mmhg$ range. C.V.A. again was the primary complication needing nursing care planning. 9. Diets ordered for patients were low salt 79.%, salt free 4.19%, diabetic 6.1%, and protein free ('no protein') 2.0%. Caloric, salt end protein levels were not defined. Recommendations based on the findings were directed to diet and other therapies.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between serum lipid profiles, apolipoprotein E phenotype, and dietary patterns in a cross-section of healthy individuals from Cheju-Do. Age, gender, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, dietary consumption, drinking / smoking habits and menopausal status were surveyed. Total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose, and insulin levels were measured from overnight fasting blood. The study involved a total of 286 individuals(147 men and 139 women) between the ages of 20 and 60 years old. All of the subjects were recruited from a population of healthy individuals living in Cheju-Do. The results of the study are as follows : 1) Among the males, those in their 20's had the maximum food intake, while those in their 40's had the minimum food intake. For the females, food intake was the highest for those in their 30's. Energy and nutrient intakes were directly proportional to the amount of food intake. Men in their 30's were heavier than other men and women in their 40's were heavier than other women. The activity index for men in their 20's and 30's appeared to be lower than that of men above 40. The activity index of women in their 20's appeared to be lowest among all aged groups, and the index appeared to increase from the age of 30 onwards. 2) In terms of changes In serum constituents with age, men in their 40's appeared to have the highest levels of serum constituents such as lipids, glucose, and insulin. Men in their 50's showed the highest levels of serum LDL-cholesterol and glucose. Men in their 30's showed peak levels of serum triglycerides. On the other hand, women in their 50's appeared to have peak levels of serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides. There was no ch:ange with age in HDL-cholesterol and insulin levels for men and women. The percentage of the subjects had the following apo E phenotypes : E3/3, 91.3% ; E3/2, 5.4% ; E4/3, 2.5% ; E4/2, 0.7%. Lee's reserch with Korean female college students showed that the percentage of ApoE3/3, E3/2, E 4/2, E4/3, and E4/4 were 84.8%, 6.7%, 6.7%, 0.9%, 0.9%, respectively. The number of samples with ApoE mutation was so small that there was no statistical significance in the relation between apolipoprotein E phenotype and se겨m lipids. 3) To investigate the relati onship between weight and serum constituents, the subjects of this study were divided into three groups by BMI underweight, normal weight, and overweight. The serum constituents of men and women below the age 40 in the overweight groups belonged to the normal domain. On the other hand, serum cholesterol levels of both men and women above the age 40 in the overweight groups remained in the borderline-high region(above 200mg/dl), and the mean value of LDL-cholesterol(above 130mg/dl) and triglycerides of men were above normal. Fasting blood glucose levels also remained in the borderline-high region. Total cholesterol levels of women above the age 40 in the overweight group was in the borderline-high region.
