  • 1. In pot exreriments, the leaf blades of rice plants grown on Akiochi soil were weakened and the leaves dropped noticeably. This phenomenon could be prevented with application of silicate materials such as potassium silicate, Wallastonite and silicate slag (normally used silicate fertilizer in Korea). 2. Grain yield was increased by application of all the silicate materials. The effect of wollastonite was not lower than the effect of silicate slag. 3. Basal application of wollastonite gives a higher effect on the grain yield than top dressing. With higher wollastonite application, the nitrogen effect on the grain yield increases. This increase in nitrogen effect becomes more pronounced when the nitrogen level is higher. 4. Silica content in the plant waas increased by application of silicate materials to the soil. The increase in silica content in the plant was most noticeable with wollastonite. Basal application of wollastonite proved to be more effective than top dressing. Iron and nitrogen content in the plant decreased by application of the silicate materials. 5. The application of the silicate materials to Akiochi soil increases the resistance of rice to leaf blast, neck blast and Helminthosporium leaf spot. Among the silicate materials, wollastonite was most effective. 6. Damage by leaf blast increased proportionally with the nitrogen level, but decreased clearly with increase in wollastonite level. This phenomon was most pronounced for late transplanting time. 7. Damage by Helminthosporium leaf spot was also proportionally reduced by wollastonite application.

  • The sintering properties of hydroxyapatite isolated from tuna bone and hydroxyapatite-containing wollastonite sintered by solid-state reaction was investigated. As the sinterability of hydroxyapatite dependent upon the particle size by dry milling, it showed a sintering. But the hydroxyapatite-containing wollastonite was appeared good sinterability. On X-ray measurements, the major phases of hydroxyapatite-containing wollastonite by solid state reaction at $1250^{\circ}C$ were identified as hydroxyapatite and pseudowollastonite(${\alpha}-CaSiO_3$). And the phases appeared as whitlockite [$Ca_3(PO_4)_2$] by decomposition of hydroxyapatite at higher temperature above $1250^{\circ}C$. The shapes of microstructure on SEM images changed from porous to dense bulk by elevating temperature. The mean bending strength of hydroxyapatite-containing wollastonite sintered by solid-state reaction at $1300^{\circ}C$ was about 18 MPa, it was close to the cancellous bone's maximum strength, 20 MPa.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effect of wollastonite application in degraded saline soil condition on the growth of japonica rice variety. The variety, Palgweng was tested with 4 levels of wollastonite (200, 400, 600 and 400/200 kg/l0a) and two nitrogen levels (12 and 16 kg/l0a). The effect of wollastonite was higher in 16 than 12 kg of nitrogen application. The wollastonite application reduced rice leaf blast and dead left at lower nodal position, and increased percentage of effective tillers, percentage of ripened grains and 1, 000 grain weight. The SiO$_2$ content of upper leaf was higher than lower leaf in 200 kg of wollastonite application, but there was no difference under high wollastonite application (400 kg/l0a). Highly significant positive correlationships were obtained between SiO_2 content of plant at heading and percentage of ripened grains, (r=0.613) and SiO_2 content of flag leaf and percentage of ripened grains (r=0.407). Wollastonite application did not affect the development and degeneration of primary and secondary rachis branches of panicles, but it increased the number of spikelets. The highest grain yield was obtained with 16 kg of nitrogen and 600 kg of wollastonite.

  • Korean tremoitic talc, wollastonite and clay have been used to develop a wall tile body to appropriate to the fast firing process. Some of ceramic properties of the raw materials were investigated by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and chemical analysis. The body compositions were formulated from the range of 35~75% tremolitic talc, 0~30% wollastonite and 25~35% plastic clay. Thermal gravity analysis and thermal expansion were tested for each of unfired bodies to study the correlation between thermal dehydration and linear shrinkage during the firing procedure. Linear shrinkage and water absorption of the fired bodies at the various temperature were taken as a measures for determining the proper firing range of the bodies. Increasing the content of wollastonite and firing temperature, the thermal expansion of the fired body showed the gradual decrease, and the thermal expansion curves showed a tendency to straighten. These observations may be resulted from the fact that the amounts of diopside and anorthite formed were gradually increased and those of quartz relatively decreased. The optimum compositions of the wall tile bodies for fast firing are 30% clay, 10~20% wollastonite and 50~60% tremolitic talc.

  • A pot experiment of paddy rice was carried out primarily to find out the effect of potash in relation to the application of wollastonite on paddy rice. The result which showed increased paddy rice yield has been evaluated from the factors of yield, yield components, soil and plant analysis data at different stages of plant growth and the summary of review is described as follows : 1. Effect of potash is likely to be greater in the presence of wollastonite and a larger quantity of wollastonite application would require correspondingly larger quantities of potash. 2. Application of potash and wollastonite resulted increased paddy rice yield may be largely due to increased contents of potassium, calcium and silica in the soil and increased concentration of $K_2O$, CaO and $SiO_2$, $SiO_2/N$ ratio and $K_2O/N$ ratio in rice straw. 3. The maximum paddy rice yield, at less than 300kg/10a application of wollastonite was obtained by applying 8kg of $K_2O$ per 10 are while 600kg/10a application of wollastonite gave the maximum yield by applying 16kg of $K_2O$ application per 10 are. 4. Application of wollastonite decreased the number of ears per hill and number of grains per ear. While ripening percentage and 1,000 grain weight tended to increase with wollastonite. The increased contents of CaO and $SiO_2$ in straw due to wollastonite application showed a negative correlation with the number of ears per hill and the number of grains per ear but a positive correlation was shown with ripening percentage and 1,000 grains weight. 5. Potash application appeared to be increasing the number of ears per hill and the number of grains per ear. There was a positive correlation exist between the higher content of $K_2O$ in rice straw and the number of grains per ear 6. Amount of nitrogen absorbed tended to decrease with increase in quantities of potash and wollastonite but the ratio of $SiO_2/N$ was increased by further application of potash and wollastonite. 7. $K_2O/N$ ratio was increased with incrementing in quantities of potash application but in the absence of potash, $K_2O/N$ ratio was decreased as to increasing wollastonite application.

  • Bioglass which is one of the surface active bionmaterials has a good biocompatibility but a poor mechanical strength, In the present work therefore two types of fluoride-containing bioglasses were coated on an alumina to improve mechanical strength. Crystallization of the coating layer and the hydroxyapatite formation on the bioactive glass coatings in tris-buffer solution were studied. When bioactive glass coated alumina was heat-treated Na2CaSi3O8 crystal was formed on the layer at lower temperature while wollastonite(CaSIO3) was obtained at higher temperature. Hydroxyapatite forming rate on the coating layer with Na2CaSi3O8 crystal was delayed with SiO2 contents in glass composition. However the hydroxyapatite was developed in 20minutes regardless SiO2 contents when the coating layer crystallized into wollastonite. More amount of P3+ ions were leached out of the coating layer with wollastonite than that with Na2CaSi3O8 crystal while Na+ and Ca2+ ions were leached out more easily from the Na2CaSi3O8 crystal containing coating layer.

  • Wollastonite-type glass ceramics were prepared by milling and firing at various temperatures using an automobile waste glass and waste shell as starting materials. Powder mixture ground by disk-type ball mill for 3 hours was pressed into a disk. The pressed specimen was fired at $850^{\circ}C$,$950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in air. From FE-SEM observation, with an increase of the firing temperature from $850^{\circ}C$ to $1050^{\circ}C$, whisker-type phase was grown to about 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in length. Specimen fired at $1050^{\circ}C$ showed the formation of well-crystallized whisker-type wollastonite grains and the highest compressive strength.

  • Present research is mainly focused on, microstructural and durability analysis of Graphene Oxide (GO) in Wollastonite (WO) induced cement mortar with silica fume. The study was conducted by evaluating the mechanical properties (compressive and flexural strength), durability properties (water absorption, sorptivity and sulphate resistance) and microstructural analysis by SEM. Cement mortar mix prepared by replacing 10% ordinary portland cement with SF was considered as the control mix. Wollastonite replacement level varied from 0 to 20% by weight of cement. The optimum replacement of wollastonite was found to be 15% and this was followed by four sets of mortar specimens with varying substitution levels of cementitious material with GO at dosage rates of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% by weight. The results indicated that the addition of up to 15%WO and 0.3% GO improves the hydration process and increase the compressive strength and flexural strength of the mortar due to the pore volume reduction, thereby strengthening the mortar mix. The resistance to water penetration and sulphate attack of mortar mixes were generally improved with the dosage of GO in presence of 15% Wollastonite and 10% silica fume content in the mortar mix. Furthermore, FE-SEM test results showed that the WO influences the lattice framework of the cement hydration products increasing the bonding between silica fume particles and cement. The optimum mix containing 0.3% GO with 15% WO replacement exhibited extensive C-S-H formation along with a uniform densified structure indicating that calcium meta-silicate has filled the pores.
