Ethnobotanical Study of Medicinal Plants used by Indigenous People in Wolchulsan National Park, Korea (한국 월출산 국립공원 지역민들이 이용하는 약용식물에 대한 민족식물학적 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to document the use of medicinal plants in traditional practices and to analyze and evaluate medicinal traditional knowledge of indigenous people in Wolchulsan National Park. Methods : Data were collected through interviews, informal meetings, open and group discussions, and observations guided by semi-structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed via quantitative analysis of use value (UV), informant consensus factor (ICF) and fidelity level (FL), and network analysis. Results : A total of 580 methods of usage recorded in this study were classified into 55 families, 95 genera, and 104 species. Plants with the highest recorded UVs were Glycine max (L.) Merr., Leonurus japonicus Houtt., and Artemisia princeps Pamp.. The informant consensus factor about using medicinal plants ranged from 0.55 to 0.92, which showed a high level of agreement among the informants on respiratory system disorders and pains. There were 22 species of plants with a fidelity level of 100 %, after eliminating the plants that were mentioned only once from the analysis. Finally, using network analysis, Glycine max (L.) Merr. and Artemisia princeps Pamp. were defined as species with meaningful medicinal use, while lumbago and leg pain were defined as significant ailments in the study area. Conclusions : This study highlights the diversity and importance of medicinal traditional knowledge for communities of Wolchulsan National Park, Korea. The results of this study will provide basic data for phytochemical and pharmaceutical studies, such as new medicines and therapies.

Vegetation Structure of the Kumsaenggol in the Wolchulsan National Park (월출산국립공원 금생골의 식생구조)

  • To investigate the forest structure and to suggest a basic management data of the forest in the Kumsaenggol area of Wolchulsan National Park, thirty plots were set up and surveyed. According to the analysis of classification by TWINSPAN, the community was divided into the four groups of Quercus variabilis(I), Q. acutissima(II), Pinus densiflora(III) and P. densiflora-Q. acutissima(IV). From the results of the above, it could be determined that communities I and II were in a developmental stage of the ecological succession, in which the Quercus app. community progressed from Pinus densiflora. Additionally, communities III and IV are also in a developmental stage and will be expected to show competition regarding Pinus densiflora.

Social Relations between Individuals Based on Courtship and Attack Behaviors of Reeves' Turtle (Mauremys reevesii) in Captivity (사육 상태의 남생이(Mauremys reevesii)의 구애와 공격적 행동에 따른 개체 간 사회적 관계)

  • This study aimed to understand social interactions by observing the courtship and attack behavior between individuals of 15 (6 females and 9 males) Reeves' turtle (Mauremys reevesii) in captivity in the Wolchulsan National Park. CCTV was installed in the study area from May 18, 2020 to October 19, 2020 and recorded 3 days a week (24 hours/day) for a total of 64 days and analyzed at intervals of 10 minutes per hour. Male turtle courtship was observed 884 times in total, with the heaviest females receiving the highest courtship frequency (357 times) and the smallest females receiving the least courtship (3 times). Of a total of observed 259 aggressive behaviors, 30 were for female to female, 81 for male to male, and 148 for female to male. Dominance hierarchy identified based on the result ranked females higher overall than males, and the larger the body, the higher the ranking. This study was the first in Korea to confirm individuals with high probability of reproduction through the frequency of courtship in the Reeves' turtle and investigate dominance hierarchy according to attack behavior. Our results can be used as reference behavioral data for managing and protecting the endangered Reeves' turtles and will help us understand their social structure.

Influences of Global Warming and Succession Possibility through Vertical Distribution of Communities in Ecotone, Wolchulsan National Park (월출산 국립공원 추이대 군락의 수직적 분포를 통해 본 지구 온난화의 영향과 금후의 천이 가능성)

  • This study aims at classifying and interpreting on the vegetation structure and analyzing the correlationship between communities and environmental conditions in Mt. Wolchulsan. We also predicted the succession possibility and the vertical distribution change of vegetations according to the global warming, through the pioneer species of a forest change and dominant species of canopy vegetations. We also analyzed the Raunkiaer's life-form. The communities in this ecotone are distributed vertically in the order of a Quercus acuta community, a Q. serrata-Q. variabilis community and a Q. serrata community. A Pinus densiflora community appears on the most of altitudes. The distribution of communities correlates highly with an altitude. The Q. serrata-Q. variabilis community will be succession to the Q. acuta community, and the Q. variabilis will be under natural selection gradually or remain locally. The Q. serrata community will possibly maintain as it is, and the P. densiflora community will be also under natural selection gradually. The valuable quantitative and numerical life-forms are confirmed and the layer structure of present vegetation will not be changed.

Flora and Classification by Characteristics of Nature Every Second Year in Wolchulsan National Park (월출산국립공원 자연휴식년제 구간의 식물현황과 특성별 분류)

  • The vascular plants at the nature every second year in Wolchulsan National Park was listed 325 taxa: 86 families, 205 genera, 283 species, 1 subspecies, 36 varieties and 5 forms. Based on the list of the rare plants by the Forest Research Institute, 3 taxa were recorded in the studied areas; Lilium callosum (Preservation priority order; No. 191), Viola albida (No. 202), Wikstroemia trichotoma (No. 120) and based on the list of Korean endemic plants, 8 taxa were recorded; Carex okamotoi, Lilium amabile, Carpinus coreana, Clematis trichotoma, Stewartia koreana, Ajuga spectabilis, Weigela subsessilis, Adenophora triphylla var. hirsute. Specific plants by floral region were total 44 taxa; Prunus davidiana, Wistaria floribunda in class IV, 9 taxa (Neolitsea aciculata, Vaccinium bracteatum, Utricularia racemosa, etc.) in class III, 5 taxa (Bupleurum longiradiatum, Ostericum melanotilingia, Cirsium schantarense) in class II, 28 taxa (Polygonatum falcatum, Eurya japonica, Ajuga spectabilis, etc.) in class I. The naturalized plants in this site were 4 families, 6 genera, 9 taxa and naturalization rate was 2.8% of all 325 taxa vascular plants.

Distribution of Higher Fungi in Wolchulsan National Park (월출산 국립공원의 고등균류 분포)

  • The result of the survey on higher fungi in the Wolchulsan National Park from April 2009 to October 2011 is as follows. During the survey, total of 1 kingdoms 2 divisions 5 classes 18 orders 56 families 133 genera and 298 species were surveyed, Basidiomycota has 12 orders 47 families 120 genera 278 species, Ascomycota 6 orders 9 families 13 genera 20 species. As for Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes has 46 families 118 genera 276 species. The most occurred fungi were Russulaceae with 37 species, followed by Boletaceae, Amanitaceae, Agaricaceae and Polyporaceae. Various species of most higher fungi occurred during the period with average temperature of 26.0~27.9, max. 32.0~34.9, min. 24.0~25.9, and over 100 mm of precipitation.

Butterfly Community Monitoring on Wolchulsan National Park in Korea (월출산국립공원 나비군집 모니터링)

  • Butterfly communities were monitored to investigate the emergence pattern with line transect method at Wolchulsan National Park through May to October in 2012. Totally 1,151 individuals belong to 49 species were monitored through the study period. Libythea celtis was a dominant species with showing 357 individuals(31%) followed by Pseudozizeeria maha 96 individuals(8.3%), Mycalesis gotama 75 individuals(6.5%) and Ninois dryas 72 individuals(6.2%) respectively. Among the monitoring periods, highest individuals and species(516 individuals belong to 30 species) were found at June and showed a high abundance near reservoir region. Highest diversity was shown at August with a Shannon index of 2.75 while lowest at October(Shanon index 1.78) and total diversity index was 1.71. Dominance values(Simpson index) showed highest at June with a value of 0.40 while lowest at September with a value of 0.07 and averaged 0.12. Kungol and Seongjeon compose a high similarity habitats with a similarity value of 0.52 and it was 0.17 at Kungol and Youngsan, lowest cases. Reservoir banks played a important role for habitats of specific species. It can be considered that they provide an open space of glass land for butterfly population, which was deficient at mountain area.
