  • Surveillance reconnaissance sensor network is used for surveillance in wartime and area of operation. In this paper, we propose a target localization method using the detection signal strength of seismic sensors. Relay equipment calculates the target location using coordinate information and detection signal strength of the seismic sensors. Target localization error deviation due to environmental factors was minimized by subtracting the dynamic offset when calculating the target location. Field test shows improvement of target localization through reduction of errors. The average error was decreased to 3.62m. Up to 62% improved result was obtained compared to weighted centroid localization method.

  • Finger vein recognition, which is a promising biometric method for identity authentication, has attracted significant attention. Considerable research focuses on transmission-type finger vein recognition, but this type of authentication is difficult to implement in mobile consumer devices. Therefore, reflection-type finger vein recognition should be developed. In the reflection-type vein recognition field, the majority of researchers concentrate on palm and palm dorsa patterns, and only a few pay attention to reflection-type finger vein recognition. Thus, this paper presents reflection-type finger vein recognition for biometric application that can be integrated into mobile consumer devices. A database is built to test the proposed algorithm. A novel method of region-of-interest localization for a finger vein image is introduced, and a scheme for effectively extracting finger vein features is proposed. Experiments demonstrate the feasibility of reflection-type finger vein recognition.

  • In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), thousands of sensors are often deployed in a hostile environment. In such an environment, WSNs can be applied to various applications by using the absolute or relative location information of the sensors. Until now, the time-of-arrival (TOA) based localization method has been considered most accurate. In the TOA method, however, inaccuracy in distance estimation is caused by clock drift and clock skew between sensor nodes. To solve this problem, several numbers of periodic time synchronization methods were suggested while these methods introduced overheads to the packet traffic. In this paper, we propose a new localization method based on multiple round-trip times (RTOA) of a signal which gives more accurate distance and location estimation even in the presence of clock skew between sensor nodes. Our experimental results show that the Proposed RTOA method gives up to 93% more accurate location estimation.

  • The bio-telemetry technologies, that use the wireless miniaturized telemetry module implanted in the human body and transmits several biomedical signal from inside to outside of the body, have been expected to solve the problem such as the patient's inconvenience and the limit for diagnosis. In the case of transceiver system using the wireless RF transmission method, the method of three-dimensional localization for implantable miniaturized telemetry module is necessary to detect the exact position of disease. A new method for three-dimensional localization using small loop antenna in the implantable miniaturized telemetry module was proposed in this paper. We proposed a method that can accurately determine the position of telemetry module by analyzing the differences in the strength of signal, which is received at each of the small size RF receiver array installed on the body surface.

  • Many localization schemes estimate the locations of radio nodes based on the physical locations of anchors and the connectivity from the anchors. Since they only consider the knowledge of the anchors without else other nodes, they are likely to have enormous error in location estimate unless the range information from the anchors is accurate or there are sufficiently many anchors. In this paper, we propose a novel localization algorithm with the location knowledge of anchors and even one-hop neighbors to localize unknown nodes in the uniform distance from all the one-hop neighbors without the range information. The node in the uniform distance to its all neighbors reduces the location error relative to the neighbors. It further alleviates the location error between its actual and estimated locations. We evaluate our algorithm through extensive simulations under a variety of node densities and anchor placement methods.

  • The localization accuracy in wireless sensor networks using ranging-based localization algorithms is greatly influenced by the ranging accuracy. Software implementation of HAL(Hardware Abstraction Layer) and MAC(Medium Access Layer) should seamlessly deliver the raw performance of ranging-based localization provided by hardware capability fully to the applications without degrading the raw performance. This paper presents the design and implementation of the software stack for IEEE 802.15.4a which supports normal ranging mode of the Nanotron's NA5TR1 RF chip. The experiment results shows that average ranging error rate with our implementation is 24.5% for the normal mode of the SDS-TWR ranging scheme.

  • With 5G standards proceeding in earnest and increasing demand for services of indoor localization, research on indoor location recognition is being studied in various industrial fields, and research based on fingerprint recognition technology using Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is representative. In this paper, we propose an indoor positioning system based on fingerprinting technique that uses Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) architecture and Channel State Information (CSI). In order to improve the performance in indoor positioning, we combined existing fingerprinting method and K nearest neighbor (KNN) technology which is one of the machine running technique. The performance improvements of the proposed indoor positioning system was verified by comparative experiments with the existing localization technique in a indoor localizztion testbed.

  • Mobile robots are widely used in industries because mobile robots perform tasks in various environments. In order to carry out tasks, determining the precise location of the robot in real-time is important due to the need for path generation and obstacle detection. In particular, when mobile robots autonomously navigate in indoor environments and carry out assigned tasks within pre-determined areas, highly precise positioning performance is required. However, mobile robots frequently experience data missing in wireless communication environments. The robots need to rely on predictive techniques to autonomously determine the mobile robot positions and continue performing mobile robot tasks. In this paper, we propose an extended Kalman filter-based algorithm to enhance the accuracy of mobile robot localization and address the issue of data missing. Trilateration algorithm relies on measurements taken at that moment, resulting in inaccurate localization performance. In contrast, the proposed algorithm uses residual values of predicted measurements in data missing environments, making precise mobile robot position estimation. We conducted simulations in terms of data missing to verify the superior performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • Recent technological advances allow us to envision a future where large numbers of low-power, inexpensive sensor devices are densely embedded in the physical environment, operating together in a wireless network. This paper considers localization for mobile sensors; localization must be invoked periodically to enable the sensors to track their location. Localizing more frequently allows the sensors to more accurately track their location in the presence of mobility. In this paper, we test and analyze the accuracy of a moving node localization by Received Signal Strength (RSS).

  • In the communication channel, the received signal is affected by many factors that can cause errors. These effects mean that received signal strength (RSS) based methods incur more errors in measuring distance and consequently result in low precision in the location detection process. As one of the approaches to overcome these problems, we propose using direction calibration to improve the performance of the RSS-based method for distance measurement, and sequentially a weighted least squares (WLS) method using reliability factors in conjunction with a conventional RSS weighting matrix is proposed to solve an over-determined localization process. The proposed scheme focuses on the features of the RSS method to improve the performance, and these effects are proved by the simulation results.
