The energy harvesting device is known to be promising as an alternative to solve the resource shortage caused by the depletion of petroleum resources. In order to overcome the limitations (environmental pollution and low mechanical properties) of piezoelectric elements capable of converting mechanical motion into electrical energy, many studies have been conducted on a polymer matrix-based composite piezoelectric energy harvesting device. In this paper, the output performance and related applications of the reported piezoelectric composites are reviewed based on the applied materials and processes. As for the piezoelectric fillers, zinc oxide, which is advantageous in terms of eco-friendliness, biocompatibility, and flexibility, as well as ceramic fillers based on lead zirconate titanate and barium titanate, were reviewed. The polymer matrix was classified into piezoelectric polymers composed of polyvinylidene fluoride and copolymers, and flexible polymers based on epoxy and polydimethylsiloxane, to discuss piezoelectric synergy of composite materials and improvement of piezoelectric output by high external force application, respectively. In addition, the effect of improving the conductivity or the mechanical properties of composite material by the application of a metal or carbon-based secondary filler on the output performance of the piezoelectric harvesting device was explained in terms of the structure of the composite material. Composite material-based piezoelectric harvesting devices, which can be applied to small electronic devices, smart sensors, and medicine with improved performance, can provide potential insights as a power source for wireless electronic devices expected to be encountered in future daily life.

We introduce an optimization of the number of base station antennas in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless powered communication network (WPCN). We use channel hardening property of massive MIMO system to approximate channel gain in terms of the number of base station antennas. Then, we find an optimal solution by partial differential and obtain a closed form solution by using Lambert-W function. The simulation results show that the approximation and the method of solving the optimization problem are reasonable, and the optimal solution of proposed scheme is almost identical to the optimal number of base station antennas by the exhaustive search method.

This paper investigates the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) for two-hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) decode-and-forward (DF) relay network, where a relay harvests energy from radio frequency signals transmitted by a source and then uses the harvested energy to assist information transmission from the source to its destination. The power splitting receiver is considered at the relay. To explore the performance limit of such a SWIPT-enabled system, a resource allocation (RA) optimization problem is formulated to maximize the achievable information rate of the system, where the power allocation, the subcarrier pairing and the power splitting factor are jointly optimized. As the problem is non-convex and there is no known solution method, we first decompose it into two separate subproblems and then design an efficient RA algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can achieve the maximum achievable rate of the system and also show that to achieve a better system performance, the relay node should be deployed near the source in the SWIPT-enabled two-hop OFDM DF relay system, which is very different from that in conventional non-SWIPT system where the relay should be deployed at the midpoint of the line between the source and the destination.

Cognitive radio-simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (CR-SWIPT) has attracted much interest since it can improve both the spectrum and energy efficiency of wireless networks. This paper focuses on the resource sharing between a point-to-point primary system (PRS) and a multiuser multi-antenna cellular cognitive radio system (CRS) containing a large number of cognitive users (CUs). The resource sharing optimization problem is formulated by jointly scheduling CUs and adjusting the transmit power at the cognitive base station (CBS). The effect of accessing CUs' spatial channel correlation on the possible transmit power of the CBS is investigated. Accordingly, we provide a low-complexity suboptimal approach termed the semi-correlated semi-orthogonal user selection (SC-SOUS) algorithm to enhance the spectrum efficiency. In the proposed algorithm, CUs that are highly correlated to the information decoding primary receiver (IPR) and mutually near orthogonal are selected for simultaneous transmission to reduce the interference to the IPR and increase the sum rate of the CRS. We further develop a spatial correlation-based resource sharing (SC-RS) strategy to improve energy sharing performance. CUs nearly orthogonal to the energy harvesting primary receiver (EPR) are chosen as candidates for user selection. Therefore, the EPR can harvest more energy from the CBS so that the energy utilization of the network can improve. Besides, zero-forcing precoding and power control are adopted to eliminate interference within the CRS and meet the transmit power constraints. Simulation results and analysis show that, compared with the existing CU selection methods, the proposed low-complex strategy can enhance both the achievable sum rate of the CRS and the energy sharing capability of the network.
The development of the low power application such as wireless sensors and health monitoring systems, attract a great attention to low power vibration energy harvesters. The recent vibration energy harvesters use smart materials in their structures to convert ambient mechanical energy into electricity. The frequent model of this harvesters is cantilevered beam. In the literature, the base excitation cantilevered harvesters are mainly investigated, and the related models are presented. This paper investigates a tip excitation cantilevered beam energy harvester with permendur. In the first section, the mechanical model of the harvester and magneto-mechanical model of the permendur are presented. Later, to find the maximum output of the harvester, based on the response surface method (RSM), some experiments are done, and the results are analyzed. Finally, to verify the results of RSM, a harvester with optimum design variables is made, and its output power is compared. The last comparison verifies the estimation of the RSM method which was about $381{\mu}W/cm^3$.

In wireless sensor networks, batteries limit lifespan, and heavy data transmission around the sink causes the hotspot problem. To address this, data collection amounts are allocated to child nodes to limit transmission. However, this approach has issues with nodes far from the sink having excessive energy and failing to transmit the allocated amount due to data transmission errors. This paper proposes a method to prevent sensor data loss through error recovery via retransmission. The method ensures that each node's retransmission volume stays within its allocated data amount and energy limits, using excess energy for error recovery. Simulations show that this technique effectively recovers data transmission errors, collects data, minimizes energy depletion around the sink, and increases data collection rates.

As Internet of things with a large number of nodes emerges, wireless-power communication networks (WPCN) based on a random access protocol needs to be investigated. In the random access-based WPCN, a terminal accessing later in given random access (RA) slots can harvest more energy before transmission and thus can transmit data with higher power and achieve higher throughput if the access is successful. On the basis of this property, the proposed random access control protocol gives the terminals priority and distinguishes the RA slots according to the priority level, so that a near terminal with access point allows to access preferentially other than a remote terminal. This operation decreases the throughput of near terminal and increases the throughput of remote terminal, and then, the doubly near-far problem in WPCN is resolved and the user fairness is improved. Results show that the proposed random access control improves both channel throughput and user fairness according to the priority level.

Recently, radio frequency energy transfer (RFET) attracts more and more interests for powering sensor nodes in the wireless sensor network (WSN). In the conventional WSN, reducing energy consumption of sensor nodes is of primary importance. On the contrary, in the WSN with RFET, reducing energy consumption is not an important issue. However, in the WSN with RFET, the energy harvesting rate of each sensor node depends on its location, which causes the unbalanced available energy among sensor nodes. Hence, to improve the performance of the WSN with RFET, it is important to develop network protocols considering this property. In this paper, we study this issue with jointly considering routing, scheduling, and power control in the WSN with RFET. In addition, we study this issue with considering two different objectives: 'Max-min' with which we tries to maximize the performance of a sensor node having the minimum performance and 'Max-min fairness' with which we tries to achieve max-min fairness among sensor nodes. We show that our solutions can improve network performance significantly and we also discuss the differences between 'Max-min' and 'Max-min fairness'.
