  • In wireless networks, it is well-known that intermediate nodes can be used as cooperative relays to reduce the transmission energy required to reliably deliver a message to an intended destination. When the network is under a central authority, energy allocations and cooperative pairings can be assigned to optimize the overall energy efficiency of the network. In networks with autonomous selfish nodes, however, nodes may not be willing to expend energy to relay messages for others. This problem has been previously addressed through the development of extrinsic incentive mechanisms, e.g., virtual currency, or the insertion of altruistic nodes in the network to enforce cooperative behavior. This paper considers the problem of how selfish nodes can decide on an efficient energy allocation and endogenously form cooperative partnerships in wireless networks without extrinsic incentive mechanisms or altruistic nodes. Using tools from both cooperative and non-cooperative game theory, the three main contributions of this paper are (i) the development of Pareto-efficient cooperative energy allocations that can be agreed upon by selfish nodes, based on axiomatic bargaining techniques, (ii) the development of necessary and sufficient conditions under which "natural" cooperation is possible in systems with fading and non-fading channels without extrinsic incentive mechanisms or altruistic nodes, and (iii) the development of techniques to endogenously form cooperative partnerships without central control. Numerical results with orthogonal amplify-and-forward cooperation are also provided to quantify the energy efficiency of a wireless network with sources selfishly allocating transmission/relaying energy and endogenously forming cooperative partnerships with respect to a network with centrally optimized energy allocations and pairing assignments.

  • Providing handover with guaranteed QoS for real-time multimedia service such as VoIP, video/audio streaming, and video conferencing in wireless LAN is a challenging task. In this paper, we present efficient layer 2 handover mechanism in wireless LAN, which can provide fast handover with guaranteed QoS for real-time multimedia service. To this end, the scanning period and the number of channels per scanning for handover are dynamically adapted to the type of applications and wireless networking environment, so that both the degradation of application service quality and signaling overhead are minimized simultaneously. The performance of the proposed mechanism is verified by the simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism guarantess QoS of each multimedia application with minimal power consumption.

  • WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) needs error recovery and flow control schemes to support reliable multicast protocol. Limited wireless bandwidth, as well as queuing losses caused by the asymmetric wired/wireless interactions, demands more effective approaches for reducing packet losses. Moreover, since the wireless channel is a shared broadcast medium, if sender receives feedback information simultaneously from several receivers, the feedback delays data frame transmission of forward direction by introducing channel congestion and burden at the sender. Therefore, it is important to minimize the amount of feedback information from receivers. In this paper, we propose an ARS(Adaptive Redundancy Scheme) that combines FEC(Forward Error Correction) using channel state estimation and ARQ(Automatic Repeat Request) both to reduce the amount of feedback information and the number of retransmissions and to guarantee high data reliability in a WLAN multicast environment. Performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by means of analysis and simulations in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. The results show that the proposed scheme reduces the amount of feedback information and the number of retransmissions and guarantees high data reliability, while keeping throughput efficiency similarly with the conventional FEC and ARQ scheme.

  • Recent advances in wireless communications and electronics have enabled the development of low-cost, low-power, multi-functional sensors. A typical wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large number of sensor nodes that can measure and process data while communicating through wireless channels. In this paper, we propose a hybrid query processing (HQP) algorithm for user queries submitted to the WSN. Unlike previous algorithms that consider continuous queries only, HQP supports both continuous queries and ad-hoc queries. Specially. HQP tries to reduce energy consumption of ad-hoc queries by using query results cached at each sensor node which are created during the execution of the previous continuous query. HQP can also exploit a trade-off between energy consumption and data accuracy. We evaluate the performance of HQP under a variety of WSN configurations.

  • Accidents are steadily occurring due to machine defects and carelessness during LNG storage operations. In previous studies, an environmental sensor module capable of measuring pressure, temperature, gas concentration, and flow to detect danger in advance was developed and the response speed according to the amount of leaked gas was measured. This paper proposes the development of a wired and wireless communication module that transmits data measured by the environmental sensor module to embedded devices connected to wired and wireless networks of SPI, UART, and LTE. First, a data communication module capable of interworking with an environmental sensor is designed. Design a protocol between devices in the Local Control Part and wired and wireless protocols in the Local Control Part and Remote Control Part. Ethernet, WiFi, and LTE communication modules were designed, and UART and SPI channels that can be linked with embedded controllers were designed. As a result, it was confirmed through a UI (User Interface) that each embedded device transmits data measured by the environmental sensor module while simultaneously communicating on a wired and wireless basis.

  • Broadcast has been often used to disseminate the frequently requested data efficiently to a large volume of mobile units over a single or multiple channels. Since the mobile units have limited battery power, the minimization of the access time for the broadcast data is an important problem. There have been many research efforts that focus on the improvement if the broadcast techniques by providing indexes on the broadcast data. In this paper, we studied an efficient index allocation method for the broadcast data over multiple physical channels, which cannot be coalesced into a single high bandwidth channel. Previously proposed index allocation techniques either require the equal size of index and data or have a performance degradation problem when the number of given physical channels is not enough. These two problems will result in the increased average access time for the broadcast data. To cope with these problems, we propose an efficient tree- structured index allocation method for the broadcast data with different access frequencies over multiple physical channels. Our method minimizes the average access time for the broadcast data by broadcasting the hot data and their indexes more often than the less hot data and their indexes. We present an in-0e0th experimental and theoretical analysis of our method by comparing it with other similar techniques. Our performance analysis shows that it significantly decrease the average access time for the broadcast data over existing methods.

  • This paper presents the method of measuring the feedback interference channel, which is developed between the transmit and receive antennas of a wireless repeater by receiving the transmit signal at the receive antenna of the identical repeater, and experiment results obtained by analyzing the measurements. This experiment uses 2 GHz WCDMA signal and is carried out near a highway. The high-speed mobiles on highways cause reflected signals with high Doppler frequencies and large energy. In order to characterize the feedback channel, the power delay profile and the scattering function are estimated by identifying the delay spread, the Doppler spread, the number of fingers, and the attenuation with delay. Since the feedback interference channel is constructed between the fixed TX and RX antennas, which is dependent upon the multipaths developed by moving or fixed objects around the antennas, the channel shows different properties comparing to the conventional channels between the base station and the mobile station. Therefore, the results presented in the paper are expected to provide guidelines for designing and evaluating wireless repeater systems.

  • This paper explores the throughput performance of CSMA/CA-based DCF protocol over both ideal channels and fading channels with payload size at the MAC layer in the 802.11a wireless LAN. In the ideal channel, there are no errors and at the transmission cycle there is one and only one active station which always has a packet to send and other stations can only accept packets and provide acknowledgements. In the fading channel, bit errors appear in the channel randomly and the number of stations is assumed to be fixed. And each station always has packets for transmission. In other words, we operate in saturation conditions. Up to now conventional research work about DCF throughput analysis of IEEE 802.11 a wireless LAN has been done over the ideal channel, but this paper is done over the Rayleigh/Ricean fading channel. So, the ratio of received average energy per bit-to-noise power spectral density $E_b/N_o$ is set to 25 dB and the ratio of direct-to-diffuse signal power in each sub-channel $\xi$ is set to 6 for combined Rayleigh/Ricean fading channel. In conclusion, it is shown that the saturation throughput is always less than the maximum throughput at all the payload size and the higher the transmission rate be, the higher the decreasing rate of saturation throughput compared to the maximum throughput be.

  • The absence of fire fighters' connection to communication can bring about increased loss of life due to errors and delays in rescue and actions and danger to their own safety. Therefore, when communication infrastructure has been destroyed in an enclosed space, it is necessary to set up an emergency wire or wireless telecommunication environment to fire fighting and to secure safer environment to deal with the disaster by checking the location of fire fighters. In this research, for the establishment communication environment in an enclosed inside using Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) wireless communication network, the performance of communication position determination of a single UWB communication module was evaluated regarding 6 kinds of indoor surroundings. When the communication distance in an indoor environment of each 6 channels bandwidth of UWB communication frequency was measured, the results were as follows: the open space (Ave. 15.5 m, Max. 20 m), the corridor (Ave. 17.33 m, Max 20 m), inside retaining home furnishings (Ave. 15.3 m, Max. 20 m), vertical stairs (Ave. 4.33 m, Max. 6 m), horizontal space with a closed fire door (Ave. 6.5 m, Max. 17 m). It was also found out that the communication function and the distance function were best in the frequency range from 6489.6 to 1081.6 MHz by 7 Ch. Accordingly, the establishment of communication environment in an enclosed space is judged to be possible when UWB communication module is set up at 20 m apart and multiple channels are used.

  • When adapting the transmitter to the channel state information(CSI), improved transmission is possible compared to the open loop system where no CSI is provided at the transmitter. However, since the perfect channel information is rarely available at the transmitter, the system design based on the partial CSI becomes an important factor. Especially, in mobile environments, the consideration for the outdated CSI should be applied for mitigating the performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a robust adaptive modulation and coding scheme for bit-interleaved coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing over time-varying channels. With reasonable feedback overhead, the proposed scheme shows the enhanced performance by compensating for the outdated CSI due to Doppler spread. Simulation results confirm that the performance gain is achieved by applying an accurate BER estimation method.
