  • An increasing number of researches and developments for personal or professional service robots are attracting a lot of attention and interest industrially and academically during the past decade. Furthermore, the development of intelligent robots is intensively fostered as strategic industry. Until now, most of practical and commercial service robots are worked by remotely operated controller. The most important technical issue of remote control is a wireless communication, especially in the indoor and unstructured environments where communication infrastructures might be destroyed by various disasters. Therefore we propose a multi-robot following navigation method for securing the valid communication distance extension of the remote control based on WPAN(Wireless Personal Area Networks). The concept and implementation of following navigation are introduced and the performance verification is performed through real navigation experiments in real or test-bed environments.

  • This paper presents an analysis of resource assignment for multihop communications in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless personal area networks. The purpose of this paper is to figure out the effect of using directional antennas and relaying devices (DEVs) in communications. The analysis is performed based on a grouping algorithm, categorization of the flows, and the relaying DEV selection policy. Three schemes are compared: direct and relaying concurrent transmission (DRCT), direct concurrent transmission (DCT), and direct nonconcurrent transmission (DNCT). Numerical results show that DRCT is better than DCT and DCT is better than DNCT for any antenna beamwidths under the proposed algorithm and policy. The results also show that using relaying DEVs increases the throughput up to 30% and that there is an optimal beamwidth that maximizes spatial reuse and depends on parameters such as the number of flows in the networks. This analysis can provide guidelines for improving the performance of mm-wave band communications with relaying DEVs.

  • WPANs (Wireless personal area networks) have developed as various forms according to requirements such as data rate, coverage, subscriber volume, and supported mobile velocity. And mobile device with multiple network interfaces is very common. To make these multi-mode devices communicate with any WPAN device at anytime, anywhere, the framework for heterogeneous wireless networks is essential. Therefore, we propose the integration framework to converge heterogeneous WPANs. In this paper, we explain the requirements and detailed design of our framework, and then present the emulation test results.

  • The rapid proliferation of in-home and office information applications and services is driving the need for new wireless technologies enabling wideband short range multimedia communications. Due to the growing demand for higher quality media and faster wireless connections, several IEEE standardization groups are considering very high data rate alternatives physical layer(s) for Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). The Ultra Wide Band (UWB) multiple access technology based on very narrow pulse transmission, is one viable candidate for these applications providing very high bit rates services, low power consumption and accurate positioning capability. In this paper we provide a methodology to evaluate the UWB system BER performance in UWB wireless fading networks with power controlled UWB devices are considered. Results can be used to analyze the performance of a given network topology and to provide useful design ideas for an UWB home sensor network.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 is the standard wireless link technology for low power, low cost, but long lifetime applications including wireless sensor network (WSN). Currently, whether or not IP architecture should be used in WSN over its 802.15.4 link is under dispute. Such kind of arguments may last for a long time without some convincing experimental measurements of real case performances of IP over 802.15.4 implementation, and thus prevent the advance of related research. In RFC4944, IETF proposed the 6LoWPAN specification to enable IPv6 communication over low power, wireless personal area networks. We try to alleviate the dispute and make the direction clearer to the community so as to promote further valuable research in this topic.

  • ZigBee is a standard for wireless personal area networks(WPANs) based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. It has been developed for low cost and low power consumption. There are two alternative routing schemes that have been proposed for the ZigBee standard: Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector(AODV) and tree routing. The tree routing forwards packets from sensors to a sink node based on the parent-child relationships established by the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC topology formation procedure. In order to join the network, a sensor node chooses an existing node with the strongest RSSI(Received signal strength indicator) signal as a parent node. Therefore, some nodes carry a large amount of traffic load and exhaust their energy rapidly. To overcome this problem, we introduce a new metric based on link quality and traffic load for load balancing. Instead of the strength of RSSI, the proposed scheme uses the new metric to choose a parent node during the topology formation procedure. Extensive simulation results using TOSSIM(TinyOS mote SIMulator) show that the CFR scheme outperforms well in comparison to the conventional tree routing scheme.

  • Due to their rapid growth and new paradigm applications, wireless sensor networks(WSNs) are morphing into low power personal area networks(LoWPANs), which are envisioned to grow radically. The fragmentation and reassembly of IP data packet is one of the most important function in the 6LoWPAN based communication between Internet and wireless sensor network. However, since the 6LoWPAN data unit size is 102 byte for IPv6 MTU size is 1200 byte, it increases the number of fragmentation and reassembly. In order to reduce the number of fragmentation and reassembly, this paper presents a new scheme that can be applicable to 6LoWPAN. When a fragmented packet header is constructed, we can have more space for data. This is because we use 8-bits routing table ill instead of 16-bits or 54-bits MAC address to decide the destination node. Analysis shows that our design has roughly 7% or 22% less transmission number of fragmented packets, depending on MAC address size(16-bits or 54-bits), compared with the previously proposed scheme in RFC4944. The reduced fragmented packet transmission means a low power consumption since the packet transmission is the very high power function in wireless sensor networks. Therefore the presented fragmented transmission scheme is well suited for low-power wireless sensor networks.

  • In this paper, we propose a QoS guaranteed and energy-efficient transmission scheme for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs), which operate in conjunction with contention-based access protocols such as CSMA/CA. Energy consumption is one of the most important issues in WPAN systems, because WPAN devices are often required to operate under limited battery capacity. Furthermore, if the WPAN adopts a contention-based medium access protocol, the energy consumption problem becomes even more critical due to the collisions caused by independent channel access trials. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an algorithm that selects the optimum fragment size, modulation level, and transmission power, in order to minimize the energy consumption and guaranteethe QoS (Quality of Service) requirements, simultaneously. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the previous ones.

  • Recently, the applications of Internet of Things (IoTs) are growing rapidly. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) becomes an emerging technology to provide the low power wireless connectivity for IoTs. The IPv6 over low-power wireless personal area networks (6LoWPAN) has been proposed by IETF, which gives each WSN device an IPv6 address to connect with the Internet. The transmission congestion in IoTs could be a problem when a large numbers of sensors are deployed in the field. Therefore, it is important to consider whether the WSN devices have be completely integrated into the Internet with proper quality of service (QoS) requirements. The Software Defined Network (SDN) is a new architecture of network decoupling the data and control planes, and using the logical centralized control to manage the forwarding issues in large-scale networks. In this research, the SDN-based 6LoWPAN Border Router (6LBR) is proposed to integrate the transmission from WSNs to Internet. The proposed SDN-based 6LBR communicating between WSNs and the Internet will bring forward the requirements of end-to-end QoS with bandwidth guarantee. Based on our experimental results, we have observed that the selected 6LoWPAN traffic flows achieve lower packet loss rate in the Internet. Therefore, the 6LoWPAN traffic flows classified by SDN-based 6LBR can be reserved for the required bandwidth in the Internet to meet the QoS requirements.
