  • To ensure accurate measurements of wireless network performance, it should be collected real-time data which are transmitted between a large number of nodes in the actual network environment. Therefore, it is necessary to develop simulation tool for finding optimal network system design method such as media access control, routing technique, ad-hoc algorithm of node deployment while overcoming spatial and temporal constraints. Our research attempts to provide an improved architecture and design method of simulation tool for wireless network is an application of multi-threading technique in these issues. We finally show that usability of the proposed simulator by comparing results derived from same test environment in the wireless LAN model of our simulator and widely used network simulation package, NS-2.

  • Advent of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has provided potentials to a variety of construction applications. It is well appreciated that WSNs have advantages over traditional wired system, such as ease of installation and maintenance with increased cost savings and efficiencies. However, the obstruction of wireless signal from physical objects in the heterogeneous construction environment often brings challenges to WSN measurement system. This paper analyzed the obstruction characteristic of construction environment where construction materials, equipment, and built structures obstruct the wireless signal yielding negative effect of measurement system. By adopting evaluation criteria, such as packet reception rate, field experiments have been implemented to quantitatively identify the interference of wireless signal from penetration, reflection, and network traffic under the construction environment. The results show that reliable performance of wireless sensor in construction environment depends on the optimal separation distance between a receiver and a transmitter, obstruction types, obstruction thickness, and transmission interval. In addition, the methodology and experimental results of this paper could be used in the practical design of network topology when hundreds of sensor nodes form a mesh network in the large scale construction applications.

  • The most essential element in wireless sensor network is wireless sensor node which collects environmental information and transmits it to the user application systems. Recently, due to the technological advancement, wireless sensor nodes are become smaller, more intelligent and less power consuming. Especially, SoC(System-on-Chip) technology, which unifies the MCU, RF module, memory and other element inside one chip, plays an important part for miniaturization of sensor node, hence reduces the manufacturing expenses. In this paper, we have designed a miniaturized wireless sensor node for wireless sensor network using commercial SoC technology and discussed about some application scenario and additional considerations.

  • The current cellular communications are optimized for low mobility users, meaning that their performance is degraded at high speed. Therefore, passengers in a high-speed train experience very poor radio link quality due to the significantly large number of simultaneous handovers. In addition, wireless data traffic is expanding exponentially in trains, subways and buses due to the widespread use of smartphones and mobile devices. To solve the inherent problem of cellular communication networks and meet the growing traffic demand, this paper proposes the mobile hotspot network of a millimeter-wave communication system as a mobile wireless backhaul. This paper describes the physical layer design of uplink and downlink in the proposed system, and the performances of uplink and downlink are evaluated under Rician fading channel conditions. The implemented baseband prototype of the proposed millimeter-wave communication modem is presented. This system can provide a Gbps data rate service in high-speed trains carrying hundreds of wireless Internet users.

  • In this paper, we study a wireless cellular network design problem. It consists of selecting the location of the base station controllers and mobile service switching centres, selecting their types, designing the network into a tree-topology, and selecting the link types, while considering the location and the demand of base transceiver stations. We propose a constraint programming model and develop a heuristic combining local search and constraint programming techniques to find very good solutions in a reasonable amount of time for this category of problem. Numerical results show that our approach, on average, improves the results from the literature.

  • Wireless mesh network technology with transmission speeds similar to wired and wireless technology means to build, compared with wired networks, building a more efficient network to provide convenience and flexibility. The wireless mesh network router nodes in the energy impact of the mobility is less constrained and has fewer features entail. However, the characteristics of various kinds due to network configuration settings and the choice of multiple paths that can occur when the system overhead and there are many details that must be considered. Therefore, according to the characteristics of these network routing technology that is reflected in the design and optimization of the network is worth noting. In this paper, a multi-path setting can be raised in order to respond effectively to the problem of the router node data loss and bandwidth according to traffic conditions and links to elements of the hop count evaluation by using a genetic algorithm as a workaround for dynamic routing the routing metric for wireless mesh network scheme is proposed.

  • In this paper, the two design techniques of the embedded system which provides a wireless image observation with temporary ad-hoc network are proposed and developed. The first method is based on the embedded system design technique for a nearly real-time wireless short observation application, having a specific remote monitoring node with a built-in image processing function, and having the maximum rate of 1 fps (frame per second) wireless image transmission capability of a $160{\times}128$size image. The second technique uses the embedded system for a general wireless long observation application, consisting of the main node, the remote monitoring node, and the system controller with built-in image processing function, and the capability of the wireless image transmission rate of 1/3 fps. The proposed system uses the wireless ad-hoc network which is widely accepted as a short range, low power, and bidirectional digital communication, the hardware are consisted of the general developed modules, a small digital camera, and a PC, and the embedded software based upon the Zigbee stack and the user interface software are developed and tested on the implemented module. The wireless environment analysis and the performance results are presented.

  • Wireless communication technology developed, portable wireless devices based on wireless network including the smartphone rapidly developed, and products with functions similar to highly efficient computer are being launched. Therefore, active studies to enable performance of works, which were previously held in computers, on portable wireless terminal are being held. Until now, simulation was undertaken using computers which satisfy high performance computing resource. Such contains a problem that it cannot break away the limit of space. Portable wireless terminal has the merit that it can break away from the limit of space by using wireless network in comparison to wired environment. In this paper, it suggests a simulator based on wireless devices for distributed simulation. For such purpose, the performance time of simulation will be compared in regards to the case of performing nodes control simulation in a single highly efficient computer and the case of performing distributed simulation in many wired and wireless network environments. Through the comparison, the possibility for utility of portable wireless terminal as the object of distributed simulation will be verified, and it will be presented that simulation can be performed in a shorter time by performing distributed simulation under various wired and wireless network environments away from the limit of space.

  • The wireless sensor network (WSN) is well known for an enabling technology for the ubiquitous environment such as real-time surveillance system, habitat monitoring, home automation and healthcare applications. However, the WSN featuring wireless communication through air, a resource constraints device and irregular network topology, is threatened by malicious nodes such as eavesdropping, forgery, illegal modification or denial of services. For this reason, security in the WSN is key factor for utilizing the sensor network into the commercial way. There is a series of symmetric cryptography proposed by laboratory or industry for a long time. Among of them, recently proposed HUMMINGBIRD algorithm, motivated by the design of the well-known Enigma machine, is much more suitable to resource constrained devices, including smart card, sensor node and RFID tags in terms of computational complexity and block size. It also provides resistance to the most common attacks such as linear and differential cryptanalysis. In this paper, we implements ultra-lightweight cryptography, HUMMINGBIRD algorithm into the resource constrained device, sensor node as a perfectly customized design of sensor node.
