A basic access method about IEEE 802.11 MAC layer protocol using IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs is the DCF thatis based on the CSMA/CA. But, cause of IEEE 802.11 MAC layer uses original backoff algorithm (exponential backoff method), when collision occurred, the size of contention windows increases the double size Also, a time of packet transmission delay increases and efficienty is decreased by original backoff scheme. In this paper, we have analyzed TCP packet transmission time of IEEE 802.11 MAC DCF protocol for wireless LANs a proposed enhanced backoff algorithm. It is considered the transmission time of transmission control protocol (TCP) packet on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in additive white gaussian noise (A WGN) and Rician fading channel. From the results, a proposed enhanced backoff algorithm produces a better performance improvement than an original backoff in wireless LAN environment. Also, in OFDM/quadrature phase shift keying channel (QPSK), we can achieve that the transmission time in wireless channel decreases as the TCP packet size increases and based on the data collected, we can infer the correlation between packet size and the transmission time, allowing for an inference of the optimal packet size in the TCP layer.

In this paper we designed a high speed wireless multiple access protocol, which is suitable for future multimedia wireless LAN systems which support high quality video teleconferencing, telephony and graphic databases. In the proposed protocol, Slotted-ALOHA protocol is used for transmitting random data packets and the packet reservation multiple access(PRMA) protocol for transmitting periodic data packets. The use of minislot is introduced for the reservation scheme. In order to measure the performance characteristic of the proposed protocol, a simulator is designed using an object oriented programming language, C++, and an exhaustive simulation study is carried out. From the simulation results, it is observed that the proposed protocol and the existing PRMA protocol have almost the same delay characteristic when network traffic is low. However, the proposed protocol is superior to the PRMA protocol when traffic becomes higher. The proposed protocol and the results can be utilized for the design of the wireless access systems and future broadband wireless LANs.
In this paper, we investigate a charging mechanism for the system interworking between Wireless Local Area Networks(LANs) and Cellular Networks. Because the charging mechanisms of the two networks are different, a unified charging mechanism is required to correlate the charging informations of the two networks in the system interworking. Therefore, we propose a unified charging mechanism to collect charging information with a combined identifier. Also, we propose a decision method to control the interval of transferring accounting information according to the charging types of users (pre-paid, off-paid, and fixed-rate) and show that the proposed decision method improves the granularity and the communication efficiency of charging informations.
Signals transmitted from access point (AP) or stations in different wireless LANs (WLAN) interfere each other when the WLANs are closely installed. When they are configured to use the same channel, signals from an WLAN get collided with signals from other WLANs so that the delay increases to user stations and the throughput decreases. In this paper, we propose a method in which an AP in a basic service set (BSS) detects other BSSs using the same channel and switches to a different channel not being occupied by any other BSS. We can avoid using the same channel with other BSS in spacially overlapped BSS environment. The proposed scheme is simulated and its characteristics are described with the analysis of the result. The results measured in terms of throughput show that the problems in overlapped wireless LANs can be resolved with the proposed method.

A new backoff scheme for infrastructure mode in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs is proposed to improve a performance. Each station generates a unique backoff number using total number of stations, fairness parameter included in beacon frame and an user's ID that is assigned by AP. The station sends a packet after its own backoff number of idle slots, which makes a collision free access among stations within AP's coverage. The proposed method shows better performance in the view of channel utilization and packet delay than an original IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA backoff scheme.

Wireless LAN systems have been widely implemented for supporting the wireless internet services especially in the hotspot areas such as hospitals, homes, conference rooms, and so on. Compared with wired LAN systems, wireless LAN systems have the advantages of the users' mobility support and low implementation and maintenance costs. IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN systems employ the backoff algorithm to avoid contentions among STAs when two or more STAs attempt to transmit their data frames simultaneously. The MAC efficiency can be improved if the CW values are adaptively changed according to the channel state of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. In this paper, a dynamic contention window control algorithm is proposed using the genetic algorithm to improve the MAC throughput of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs.
Wireless local area networks have known an increasing popularity during the past few years. However, as new user applications diverge from the traditional data-centric model, the introduction of efficient, QoS aware medium access methods becomes of utmost importance. EY-NPMA is a medium access protocol belonging to the contention paradigm that provides support for service differentiation and low collision rates. In this paper, we address a shortcoming of EY-NPMA as indicated by previous studies, namely the insensitivity of the protocol to different working conditions. In this work, we study and evaluate a mechanism that allows a network employing EY-NPMA to adapt its operating parameters according to the offered load. Simulation studies further document and confirm the positive characteristics of the proposed mechanism.

The connectivity-based reliable multicast MAC protocol was proposed for IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs and the formulae for the lower bounds of the multicast downlink throughput and the uplink throughput of the connectivity-based reliable multicast MAC protocol were derived in our previous study. We provide the tighter throughput lower bounds of the connectivity-based reliable multicast MAC protocol than the lower bounds presented in our previous study.

IEEE 802.11 Point Coordination Function (PCF) mode is defined to support time bounded traffic, such as voice in wireless LANs. The poll scheduling plays an important role in IEEE 802.11 PCF mode operation. This paper proposed a Multicast Polling Scheme (MPC) to increase the performance of wireless LANs. Moreover, we proposed a polling schedule scheme for our proposed multi-poll to serve real-time traffic. The results show that the proposed mechanism is more efficient than the original IEEE 802.11 PCF.
