This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of harvesting time of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam; IRG) in spring on dry matter (DM) yield. IRG cultivars 'Kowinearly' and 'Greenfarm' were seeded at 50 kg/ha and grown on rice paddy fields. There was no difference in growth characteristics between both varieties before winter. However, cold tolerance of Kowinearly was higher than that of Greenfarm, as demonstrated by post-wintering growth characteristics. The heading date of both varieties was affected by the spring weather. The IRG was harvested three times at 5-day intervals beginning from 9 May. The DM yield of Greenfarm was 6,306; 7,335; and 8,109 kg/ha, and that of Kowinearly was 7,498; 9,196; and 10,449 kg/ha at the three consecutive harvests. The delay of the harvesting time for 5 and 10 days increased the DM yield of Greenfarm by 16% and 29% and that of Kowinearly by 23% and 39%, respectively, compared to the yield at first harvest (p < 0.05). Therefore, IRG harvest later than early to mid-May is expected to increase productivity. The feed values of Greenfarm were: 12.2% of crude protein (CP), 34.5% of acid detergent fiber (ADF), 57.7% of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 61.6% of total digestible nutrients (TDN), and 72.3% of in vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD). For Kowinearly, these values were 16.4% of CP, 30.4% of ADF, 52.7% of NDF, 64.9% of TDN and 79.0% of IVDMD.
Cold acclimation involves changes in gene expression. BN28 and BN115 are two genes which are regulated by cold temperature and assumed having roles in cold acclimation. The objectives of this experiment was to explore the expression of BN28 and BN115 under field conditions. Six winter cultivars were planted at three different dates during the fall. The expression of the genes was determined by northern blot analysis of total RNA taken from leaves 15 to 30 day-intervals after planting. The expression of the two genes was detected within 15 days after planting well before onset of freezing tolerance in plants. This suggestes either their expression was a prerequisite of the freezing tolerance or their expression was regulated by other environmental factors as well as temperature. Two genes showed a different expression pattern suggesting they had a different regulatory system. Although timecourse increase in expression of the cold-regulated genes was matched with increase in freezing tolerance, the difference of expression in cultivar level at specific times of measurement was not correlated with freezing tolerance at the moment.

Rice has important role as a primary food resource in especially the Asia, Korea, China, India, Indonesia and Japan. After development and increasingly using artificial chemical fertilizer, rice is getting high quality and quantity to satisfy ever-increasing people. On the other hand, the earth environment is more polluted each day. Nowadays consumers are looking for the organic crops or foods that were grown with eco-friendly method and in pure farmland. With the immergence of this trend, it is time to development environmentally-friendly agriculture. One of the methods is growing green manure crops in winter or spring on the fields. For this reasons, growing rye and Italian ryegrass are useful to use green manure to enhance rice production without chemical fertilizers and make the property of the soil eco-friendly. To know how improve the quality and quantity of rice with green manures, rye and Italian ryegrass, first the characteristics of green manure corps were measured. Dry matter yields of the rye and Italian ryegrass were 2.21 and $1.81t\;Ha^{-1}$. And the percentages of the dry matter were 28 and 32%. And, analyzed mineral components in rye and Italian ryegrass were nitrogen, organic matter, $P_2O_5$, CaO, $C_2O$ and MgO. Specially, the percentages of the organic matter and the CaO between rye and Italian ryegrass have difference appreciably. the height of the rice on the Italian ryegrass-fertilized field was the highest among the variant fields. The height of the rice on the non-fertilized field was the lowest. Yield of the Italian ryegrass-, rye- and non-fertilized rice are 805.2, 639.9 and $415.3kg\;10a^{-1}$. At the result, Italian ryegrass is the most effective green manure among the 3 treated-fertilized.
Freezing resistance of ten cultivars of Chestnut (Castanea crenata S. et Z.) collected from four different sites of Kyunggi Province, Korea on March 2, 1975, was measured to find out the differences among tissue parts, and those among cultivars. The freezing and thawing rates were controlled lower than $6^{\circ}C/hr$. which occurs in nature. The resistance to low temperature was in order from lowest to highest; winter bud, cambium, xylum ray parenchyma and bark cortex. The difference in cold hardiness among cultivars was not consistent among tissue parts of twig stem except in cultivar Dan-Taeck of which all tissue parts showed highest cold-hardiness. The importance of the study on the seasonal variation in cold hardiness of different tissue parts was discussed in terms of choosing the most cold resistant Chestnut culitivar in Korea.

With a purpose of evaluation rye crop as winter green feed, a cultivar was sown in autumn and harvested at booting, heading, milk, dough and yellow-ripe stages, and processed into silage. The quality of the silage was assessed in terms of ammonia-N, recovery rate in dry matter, pH, and the composition of organic acids. The results obtained are: 1. The recovery rate in dry matter from the silage was the highest when harvested at yellow stage (P<0.01). The ratio of ammonia-N to total-N was low when the rye crop was harvested during milk (9.4%) and dough ( 12.7%) stages (P$NH_3-N$. 3. Silage quality based on the composition of organic acids was highly evaluated when the crop was harvested during milk, and dough stages. 4. Considering both the DM yield and quality of the silage, it was found that rye crop should be harvested at dough stage and ensiled.
A new pot chrysanthemum cultivar 'Peace Angel' was bred by cross pollination between 'Peace Yellow' and 'Lompoc' at the Yesan Chrysanthemum Experiment Station. The cross was made in 2003 and 'Peace Angel' was finally selected in 2007 after investigating its characteristics from 2005 to 2007. It flowers in the middle of October under natural conditions in Korea climate, but year-round production is also possible by short day treatment in summer or lighting treatment in winter. Flower shape is anemone type with pink petals and a yellow green center. Flower diameter is about 5.6 cm and the number of flowers per stem is 23.0, respectively. When short day treatment is necessary for manipulation of flower formation, 7 weeks of short day treatment is enough for the production. The shelf life is 22.4 days in the autumn season.
Lilium longiflorum 'Charm' as a $F_1$ hybrid cultivar was released by crossing inbred line '$L_2$-14' and '$L_2$-21' which were obtained from 5 self crosses originated from 'Nellie White', 'Ace' and 'Hinomoto'. The growth and flowering characteristics were evaluated in a greenhouse maintained at a minimum of $13^{\circ}C$ at night during winter in 2006 and 2007. The flower of 'Charm' is white color and horizontal-facing. The flower number of a plant and its diameter is 7.4 and 16.5 cm with 24.5 ornamental(flowering) days. The plant height is 60.3 cm with 70.3 number of leaves. The stem diameter and internode length is 1.2 cm and 1.1 cm, respectively, meaning the plant is compact and sturdy. And the number of seed per a capsule is 251.1. The results of these evaluation, therefore, suggest that seedling Lilium longiflorum 'Charm' can be used as a pot plant due to its short stems, many number of flowers per plant, long ornamental period, strong growth habit with many leaves and thick stem diameter.

A chemical, MNU-induced hulless barley mutant line designated as 'Mutant 98 (M98)' was developed from a Korean hulless waxy barley cultivar, 'Chalssalbori'. The objective of the study was to determine the genetic basis of 'M98' and the possibility of using 'M98' as breeding parent to improve lysine level. Compared to 'Chalssalbori', 'M98' had large embryo and higher lysine content in both the embryo and endosperm. Significantly different lysine content in 'M98' and the other high-lysine barley mutant stocks was observed for two years. However, the genotype by year interaction was not significant. 'M98' was higher than the other high-lysine barley mutant stocks in the percentage of lysine of total amino acid composition (0.75%). The trait of shrunken endosperm of 'M98', which was typical in the high-lysine mutants, was inherited by a single recessive gene. Based on seed morphology and lysine content of $F_1$ seeds, 'M98' had a genetically different gene from the other high-lysine mutants for shrunken endosperm. Segregation of $F_2$ for plump/shrunken endosperm did not fit the expected ratio of Mendelian inheritance except for only one cross combination (GSHO1784 (lys1)/M98). The amino acid analysis of $F_5$ and $F_6$ progenies from the cross between 'M98' and 'Chalssalbori' revealed that the attempt to increase the range of lysine content of plump lines did not go beyond the limit of the average high-lysine barley germplasm.
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of different sowing dates on growth characteristics, seed productivity and feed value of triticale in Gyeongbuk province. The experiment was conducted from September 2015 to July 2017, using triticale "Joseong" cultivar of 150 kg of seed/ha and sown at 10 days intervals from different sowing dates ($30^{th}$ September, $10^{th}$, $20^{th}$ and $30^{th}$ October) in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The emergence date in the autumn season was 8 - 18 days after sowing in 2015 and 2016. The heading, flowering and maturing periods were the fastest on $30^{th}$ September compared to the other sowing dates. The average number of stem and panicle per unit area were 409.3 - 428.5 and 330.9 - 334.0 on $30^{th}$ September and $10^{th}$ October, which were higher than those sown on $20^{th}$ and $30^{th}$ October, 2015 and 2016, respectively (p < 0.05), and the average number of grain and kernel weight was 47.1 - 48.1 and 2.2 - 2.3 g on $30^{th}$ September and $10^{th}$ October, which were higher than the late sowing dates. In case of seed yield as affected by different sowing dates, the highest yield was found on the sowing plot of late September and $10^{th}$ October, which were 5,680 and 5,918 kg/ha, respectively (p < 0.05). However, the average CP content was 10.7%, CF content was 2.8% and TDN content was 85.3. In conclusion, $30^{th}$ September and $10^{th}$ October were the appropriate sowing dates for a forage self-sufficiency system in Gyeongbuk.
Sesame cultivar Suweon 9 was sown at two planting time, June 19 and July 3, to study flowering and seed maturation process. Flowering began at 37-40 days after sowing at the 2-4th node and proceeded to upper node with the speed of 1.78 days (June 19 planting) and 1.56 days (July 3 planting) per node until Sept. 1. Sesame capsule reached its full size about 10 days after flowering. Number of sesame seed increased until 15 days, but seed weight gain occurred from 10 days to 35 days after flowering, that meant 25 days the actual seed filling period. The capsule flowered later than Aug. 14 remained immature. There was no more seed weight gain when average. temperature dropped below $20^{\circ}C$ (around Sept.15) and 50% of leaves had senesced. Discussion includes that sesame as an 8determinate plant may have independent source-sink relationship at each node.
